11-0 lead but it was all downhill from there. The only win being a Suglio pin at 197. The only wrestler you expect to win is Tutolo. After that who knows? You would think with all our success the last 5+ years the cupboard would never get this bare but it has.

Your cupboard tends to thin out somewhat when your primary recruiter (Moore) interviews for head coach positions elsewhere. Instead of one down year, however, we experienced two classes of lackluster recruiting. Another school should have hired him as a head coach, but when it didn't happen, it created some uncertainty within the coaching staff. The writing was on the wall when Hill was promoted while Moore was still here. Moore is a good coach/guy/recruiter and did nothing to intentionally hurt the program but the bumpy transition had a negative impact. He deserves a head coaching spot and I think CSU may be a temporary position for him. But kids aren't going to sign at a school when the coach recruiting them is known to be looking elsewhere.

Making things worse, we had an exceptional senior class last season with the most talent in quite some time. I'm sure they tied up a lot of the scholarship money. The combination of a prolonged coaching change and the strength of our graduating seniors will make this year difficult. Conel and injuries will make it even more difficult. At the end of the day, our season can be redeemed on an individual level in March. As a team, we need another year or two to get back to what we're accustomed.

I get Conel but who is a injured that could help us.

Sparkman (he hasn't been the same since Vegas and the head butt) and James. They both provide a better than 50/50 chance to win their matches. With Conel in the line up and those 2 healthy, we beat UB and GW.

Chance Driscoll has really stepped up. Our youngsters are still giving up bonus points, however, and we have #5 Missouri tomorrow. Uh oh.

RE: 2016-2017 Wrestling
Lambert58/Burden,

Are Lukowich & Beard injured? I saw them as being the starters @ 125 & 141 if they were healthy this year.

Any word if Conel is going to wrestle in a KSU uniform this season? He already burnt his redshirt season.

On the iHeart radio broadcast, Matt Miller mentioned that Jairod James missed both matches this weekend due to a skin infection. He also mentioned that Spohn & Bast both weighed in for 184lbs on Friday & Sunday and Bast got the nod in a coaching decision over Spohn. I didn't see Friday's match but so most of Sunday's match and Bast looked overmatched and didn't really have a plan to attack at any point. I would have to think that Spohn is the better chance to be competitive @ 184lbs for this season.

Isaac Bast @ 165lbs looked half asleep on Sunday. He got pinned in 58 seconds against a guy that isn't in the national rankings.
In his redshirt year, Lane Hinkle is looking very strong @ 165lbs/174lbs, so I would imagine he is the starter @ 165lbs next year, with James returning @ 174lbs for his redshirt junior season.

Hopefully Jack Harris can improve enough this year during his redshirt year to become the starter @ 184lbs next year, but looking at his record it looks as though he has struggled thus far in college wrestling.

There isn't 1 senior on the roster, so a lack of experience/leadership this year has to be playing into losing close matches, getting pinned or giving up too many bonus points.

Looks like Andrassy/Hill/Mitcheff have (3) recruits in this year's recruiting class:
Jake Hinkson - 149lbs - Wexford PA
Jake Martinez - 133lbs/141lbs - Licking Valley OH (finished runner up @ 138lbs last year)
Nick Henneman - 133/141lbs - Oregon Clay HS (finished 4th last season & 6th the season before that)

RE: 2016-2017 Wrestling
Haven't heard anything about Conel but the way Suglio has done its not a big problem as of yet. It's more important that James gets back right now. Also Lamberts point is well taken. It's been a long time since I've seen us give up that many bonus points, especially pins and TF's. A lot of matches are over almost before they begin. This is just going to be a rebuilding year where we hope a Tutolo or James can give us something to root for in March.

RE: 2016-2017 Wrestling
Neither Beard or Lukowich are on the roster currently. I don't know about Lukowich, but Beard had been hurt. His first match was against OSU and he lost by TF. Simpson held his own against Missouri last night and something tells me he's won the spot at 125. "Freshman Cory Simpson went toe-to-toe with defending MAC champion No. 7 Barlow McGhee at 125, but gave up a late takedown in a 3-2 setback. "Cory wrestled really hard and put himself in a position to win," Andrassy said. "Eventually he's going to figure it out."

At 141, I was under the impression that Driscoll had the edge but that was based solely on his experience. He did well against Missouri in the loss. "Junior Chance Driscoll suffered his first dual meet loss of the season, a 2-1 decision against No. 7 Matt Manley. In the third period, Manley built up over a minute of riding time, before Driscoll could escape. "Chance almost had a takedown in the first period, before they went out-of-bounds," Andrassy said. "But he's got to get that escape earlier or choose neutral."

Conel is no longer on the roster either so I'm guessing Suglio was told that he was the starter for the rest of the year. Historically, this is the time of year when the roster is finalized so the absence of some wrestlers isn't totally unexpected. At 184, Spohn is probably the best wrestler in the room but he's getting hammered at times in matches by pin or TF. He's too experienced for that and didn't wrestle against Missouri for it, I imagine, as well as over the weekend. Was the benching a wake up call?

James and Tutolo will be fine. They will lose against the better wrestlers throughout the season but come March, it's a different game. The same can be said of Sparkman and Nye. The potential is there but they are going through growing pains.

Monico and Barreiro are still on the roster so that's good, but Jack Harris is off along with the aforementioned Beard. Harris was probably the highest ranked recruit so that's not good...Something tells me that there was a mid-season "Come to Jesus" moment/conversation with the team. Although they lost handily to Missouri, Coach A seemed pleased with the effort.

RE: 2016-2017 Wrestling
Thanks for the updates/info Lambert58 and Burden.

Beard and Harris were nationally ranked and highly recruited, I guess it goes to show you that High School and D1 College Wrestling are 2 totally different worlds. I watched the Missouri match and Simpson definitely seems to get it, once he gets stronger and more matches, he should be a solid starter.

There are 3 recruits committed for lower weights, so the coaching staff needs to secure a few upper weights commits and 1 or 2 middleweights. I am really curious to see how the starters due @ the Virginia Duals next weekend, after 2 full weeks off from competition.

Does anybody know how badly Tutolo is hurt? I noticed his last two matches during the Lockhaven tournament were medical forfeits.

Tutolo is not wrestling in the Virginia Duals. I assume due to the leg injury he suffered two weeks ago. Not good.

RE: 2016-2017 Wrestling
The struggle continues. Despite Coach A's optimism, we were hammered by Virginia Tech and only won 3 matches against Lock Haven, a squad that we would handle in the not so distant past. Driscoll was the only wrestler that went 2-0 and we gave up a lot of bonus points on the day. Sparkman and James went 1-1, but everyone else went 0-2. Hopefully tomorrow is better.

RE: 2016-2017 Wrestling
Can't add very much. The good news I guess is we will be wrestling weaker teams tomorrow. All the losses by pins and technical falls show us how far we need to go. I get the sense that wrestling teams don't turnaround very quickly so will have to be patient.

Yeah, definitely a disappointing season thus far, but with 6 senior starters graduating and Conel not returning, I am not sure there was a chance they could be good this year.

We should beat Citadel 40-3. Ouch. Ohio University is having a down year as well but I have a bad feeling about our upcoming dual with them.

RE: 2016-2017 Wrestling
KSU just got a transfer @ 125lbs, Harry Feuer from Brecksville OH. Speaking of 125lbs, Cory Simpson was on a good role, but lost all 4 matches this weekend. Maybe he is hitting the "freshman wall"? Hopefully Tutolo will be back for Ohio U. Anyone know where Beard & Harris transferred to?

Feuer should help, but I really hope him being added isn't indicative of the seriousness of Tutolo's injury. I tried to find information on Beard and Harris but came up empty. Same with Conel. Simpson has turned in a solid performance but you may be right about the wall. We can only hope for more ups than downs.

Norte Dame College. I believe our old coach (Romano??) still coaches there where he has won a Division II championship or two.

RE: 2016-2017 Wrestling
Not pretty. We lost 43-3 to Ohio. Suglio was winning 6-2 in the third and got pinned. James at 174 won his match 6-4 but then decided to throw a right hook at his opponent and was DQ'd. The Ohio wrestler was less than perfect but you know how it goes. The ref sees the retaliation. I hope he learned a lesson on that one. Although Tutolo was listed to wrestle he forfeited. His problem is with his meniscus and he is expected to be back before the end of the year according to my secret source. I got lucky and was sitting another wrestlers mother who gave me the scoop. She wasn't all that sure about the details though. Sparkman was the only official winner for Kent.
