Seth Beard & Kyle Lukowich haven't wrestled yet for KSU this season.

Here are the statistics through the 1st 3 tournaments: http://kentstatesports.com/documents/201...WStats.pdf

It's odd looking at all the individual and team rankings and seeing no Flashes in the top 20. Hope it looks slightly different by March.

We won't have to wait until March for Tutolo and James to be ranked - they will crack the top 20 next round.

Nice event tonight. The lower bowl was full (student sections were not used). Upper level was 70% full. Lot of Ohio St. fans of course. Kent beat Cleveland St 40-3 only losing one match in double OT. They lost to OSU 36-13 winning three matches. Tutolo a major, James a pin and Sparkman a decision. We won't talk about the 7 matches they lost. Mostly losses by pins and technical falls. One thing I predict is that heavyweight from OSU will be pretty good.

Tutolo is ranked 16th and Sparkman is 19th. I thought James may have been ranked, but not yet. All 3 will face tougher competition at Cliff Keen this week so movement is possible.

Ohio State is loaded! Snyder won't be the only "pretty good" wrestler for them. Their "question marks" at 125 and 197 are young hammers that have the potential to propel OSU to a possible national title.

Is Conel going to wrestle this year? I suppose he could be out of shape after leaving the team for awhile or Andrussy might want him to red shirt a year to find out if he really wants to wrestle. Have you heard anything?

I'm not hearing anything. He wasn't gone for very long so conditioning shouldn't be too big of a challenge. Then again, his conditioning was an issue last year. Hopefully he gets a shot but I think Suglio has the spot.

If Conel hadn't left the team, we could potentially have 4 NCAA qualifiers which would be pretty good given the depth that graduated.

I think that Conel redshirted the 2014-2015 season, so he wouldn't be able to redshirt this season. Nye has been disappointing thus far, after his successful redshirt campaign last season.

You know it's bad when the official Kent website says the Flahes endured a bad day. Only Tutolo survived day one and finished sixth. The team finished 25th out of 34 teams.

Once again we lost a lot of matches by pin. It's going to be a rough year.

I believe you're correct on the redshirt for Conel and I agree that Nye has struggled this year.

Once again we lost a lot of matches by pin. It's going to be a rough year.

Other than Tutolo, we went bust in Vegas. Our inexperience was on full display and cost us a lot of matches. I watched most of the matches on Flo and my frequent response was: "What are you doing?".

125 No entry
133 Tutolo had a very strong tournament and will get a better ranking as a result. He had 2 solid wins (7-5, 8-3) before getting pinned in his 3rd match. The match was competitive until he was caught off balance and was put to his back. He rebounded nicely with a big win over a returning AA. In the 1st period of the match, it looked as though he was going to be pinned but he survived the 6 point move to storm back for a marquis win.
141 Driscoll went 2-2
149 Rooney went 1-2
157 Sparkman had a TF but was concussed in his 2nd match and had to forfeit the remainder of the tournament.
165 Bast went 0-2. In his second match, he had his opponent in a cradle but instead of getting the pin, he was pinned. That's not supposed to happen at this level...
174 James lost his opening match to the #5 seed in an OT thriller. He won 2 matches before losing 4-0. During his last match, he put his opponent on his back but failed to keep a toe in bounds, missing out on a pin or at least 6 points. He was injured later in the match and couldn't bounce back.
184 Spohn went 0-2. He lost 4-14 and by fall. In his LBF, he had position but inexplicably gave it up. Just like Bast, he gave away a win.
197 Suglio went 2-2 with a pin versus the #10 seed.
285 Nye went 0-2.

Making matters worse, Central Michigan had a very strong tournament. We're going to take our lumps this year for sure. I'm still optimistic about Tutolo, Sparkman, James, and Conel (maybe).

Last year's dual was a lot closer than the score indicated so we better not take Buffalo lightly despite years of owning them. Here are my predictions for our first MAC dual.

125 Featuring 3 true freshman and a RS freshman, this will be a good measure of each teams' recent recruiting efforts. All four wrestlers are state champions / medalists. Our Ohio kids will battle UB recruits from New York and Illinois. I'm an Ohio homer so...KSU (I have no idea whether it will be Beard or Simpson - I'm sure their wrestle off this week was spirited) wins 3-2. Team score of 3-0.

133 Tutolo wins (8-3) but can't get the MD against an opponent that is a multiple NY state placer. 6-0.

141 Driscoll gets the nod and wins 4-3 against the true freshman. 9-0.

149 Rooney's inexperience costs him against the senior who wins by MD. 9-4.

157 If Sparkman wrestles (in doubt due to concussion protocol), we win by MD. I think Heyob gets the start and wins a close match in OT, 5-4. KSU 12-4.

165 Bast gets the close win in another low scoring affair. 15-4.

174 James will win by fall. 21-4.

184 Our struggles continue at this weight class. 21-7.

197 Both wrestlers have seen time at 285. Suglio impresses with an easy win, 9-2. KSU leads 24-7.

285 Gunning is UB's toughest wrestler and will win by fall. KSU wins the battle of the two lowest ranked teams in the conference, 24-13.

If you value your money, don't bet the house based on my predictions.

I've made some money betting against falls dogs basketball picks. Does Anybody take wrestling bets? I could use some extra Christmas money.

Not pretty. Even Tutolo lost. Final score 23-12 with Buffalo winning. It's going to be a long season.

Just lost to Gardner Webb 22-17. We won the first three matches and had an
11-0 lead but it was all downhill from there. The only win being a Suglio pin at 197. The only wrestler you expect to win is Tutolo. After that who knows? You would think with all our success the last 5+ years the cupboard would never get this bare but it has.

Your cupboard tends to thin out somewhat when your primary recruiter (Moore) interviews for head coach positions elsewhere. Instead of one down year, however, we experienced two classes of lackluster recruiting. Another school should have hired him as a head coach, but when it didn't happen, it created some uncertainty within the coaching staff. The writing was on the wall when Hill was promoted while Moore was still here. Moore is a good coach/guy/recruiter and did nothing to intentionally hurt the program but the bumpy transition had a negative impact. He deserves a head coaching spot and I think CSU may be a temporary position for him. But kids aren't going to sign at a school when the coach recruiting them is known to be looking elsewhere.

Making things worse, we had an exceptional senior class last season with the most talent in quite some time. I'm sure they tied up a lot of the scholarship money. The combination of a prolonged coaching change and the strength of our graduating seniors will make this year difficult. Conel and injuries will make it even more difficult. At the end of the day, our season can be redeemed on an individual level in March. As a team, we need another year or two to get back to what we're accustomed.
