2016-2017 Wrestling
The wrestling schedule was released and it features a lot of home action with matches against Ohio State and Oklahoma State, as well as CSU for the first time in a number of years.

RE: 2016-2017 Wrestling
Graduated Baxter, DePalma, McGuire, Miller and Buckwater. That's a lot of NCAA qualifiers. We have some talent but they have to prove themselves this year. I was a little surprised by ninth but the lower third was not surprising. Finishing in the top 20 in the NCAA takes two good wrestlers. Winning the MAC needs more depth. Remember we only finished fourth last year.

RE: 2016-2017 Wrestling
In a nutshell:

0 seniors on the roster
Only 5 juniors return
No NCAA qualifiers return
Conel (197 NCAA qualifier) is not on the roster. According to Twitter, he's done with wrestling
19 freshman (true or RS)
7 sophomores

The composition of the roster is as such because Coach Moore was the primary recruiter and his last 2 recruiting classes (sophomores and juniors) were not particularly strong. Coach Hill brought in some serious talent but they are young. We will take our lumps this year due to the youth movement. Without the opportunity to wrestle right away, however, some of the recruits may have gone elsewhere. With our schedule, I hope they're fast learners!

Losing Conel really hurts. He looked like AA material based on his freshman performance.

Yes. Multiple AA material. He was ranked 10th before he quit.

That's good news. If he gets into form it will make the season a bit more interesting. With the team projected to be weaker than it has been lately having a top individual will at least generate some interest.

RE: 2016-2017 Wrestling
Lambert58/Burden,

Any ideas who will be the starters @ 125lbs, 141lbs, & 149lbs? Those seem to be the only question marks, other than if Conel makes it back on the mat @ 197lbs for KSU this year.

Based on the roster there are (3) wrestlers @ 125:
Seth Beard - Freshman
Drew Dickson - Junior
Cory Simpson - Freshman

Based on the current roster there are (4) wrestlers @ 141lbs:
Chance Driscoll - Junior
Kyle Lukowich - Sophmore
Ethan McCoy - Freshman
Collin Adkins - Freshman

Based on the current roster there are (3) wrestlers @ 149lbs:
Tim Rooney - Redshirt Freshman
Nico O'Dor - Freshman
Jacob Spino - Redshirt Freshman

Updated roster link: http://www.kentstatesports.com/roster.as...=wrestling

Should be interesting to see what improvements have been made by Tutolo, Sparkman, Mast, James, Spohn, & Nye.

They should be a great team next year, with the NCAA Championships being hosted by Cleveland OH.

Good luck to all KSU Wrestlers @ tomorrow's Ohio Open in Cleveland OH.

Looks like Andrassy/staff have (3) recruits in this year's recruiting class:
Jake Hinkson - 149lbs - Wexford PA
Jake Martinez - 133lbs/141lbs - Licking Valley OH (finished runner up @ 138lbs last year)
Nick Henneman - 133/141lbs - Oregon Clay HS (finished 4th last season & 6th the season before that)

RE: 2016-2017 Wrestling
Here are the results from the Ohio Open from the KSU website:

Kent State freshman Lane Hinkle won the 174-pound title with a major decision and two tech falls.

junior Jerald Spohn placed second at 184, going 3-1 with a pin and a major decision. Shane Mast placed third and Caleb Stockmaster took sixth.

Junior Chance Driscoll placed third at 141, going 3-1 with a tech fall. Driscoll beat teammate and freshman Ethan McCoy 5-3 in his third place match.

At 125, junior Drew Dickson was third, while freshman Cory Simpson was fifth.

Redshirt freshman Jared Walker was fifth place on a 3-1 day at 165. After dropping his opener in sudden victory, Walker bounced back to win three straight matches.

Redshirt freshman Tim Rooney also won three matches, placing seventh at 149.

Nine other Kent State freshmen or redshirt freshmen competed, but did not place.

Story is at http://www.kentstatesports.com/news/2016...open.aspx.

RE: 2016-2017 Wrestling
My thoughts, for what they are worth:

125 - As a junior, Dickson has the edge given his collegiate experience but his high school pedigree isn't as strong as either that of Beard or Simpson. I don't think Beard has wrestled yet for us. I don't know if he's injured. I can see this class being wrestled by committee throughout the season and the younger wrestlers surpassing Dickson eventually.

133 - Tutolo is very good and has the potential to qualify for NCAAs. He (and the other starters) didn't wrestle at the Ohio Open because the level of competition is not the strongest.

141 - This will be Driscoll's 4th year of collegiate wrestling so the starting spot should be his. However, McCoy is hanging with him, only losing by 2 points at the Open. McCoy is a multiple PA place winner so he will push Driscoll.

149 - Rooney should be the starter at this weight class. He finished 2/4/5 in Ohio. I hope he wrestles to his potential or this will be a problem weight for us as I don't see anyone else ready to go.

157 - Sparkman is solid and could qualify for NCAAs.

165 - Bast has the edge. He was injured at Clarion - not sure how serious. Walker has a strong high school pedigree. We could see both throughout the year.

174 - James is the starter and could really produce. He has a lot of potential for a recruit that didn't generate a lot of interest coming out of high school (4/7).

184 - Spohn was a starter 2 years ago so he is the "leader" of the youngest line-up I've ever seen at KSU. He can dominate but I've also seen him get dominated. Interesting.

197 - Suglio has done well but Conel has the most potential.

285 - Nye has shown potential but is still somewhat of a question mark.

This season will be interesting, yet painful at times.

I was waiting for this post and I'm glad you appear slightly more optimistic than I thought you might be. I just noticed (I'm a bit slow at times) that all 5 of our post January dual meets are within a 15 day timeframe. We will be busy those two weeks. Hey do you know why two dual meets in December are in the field house??

I'm optimistic for the future more so than for this year. We will be destroyed by both Ohio State and Okie State. We may lose all 20 matches against them depending upon who is opposite of Tutolo and Sparkman. We will be lucky to split on MAC duals and to finish in the middle at the MAC tournament. If Conel wrestles, we could qualify 3 to NCAAs. Men's BB has a rare Sunday game at home on 12/18. Other than that, I'm not sure.

Indiana won the Navy Classic comfortably. Navy was second and Kent finished 3rd of 12 teams only one point behind Navy. Tutulo won at 141. Not a bad result but you saw our younger wrestlers suffering a lot of loss by pins when they were eliminated. The only other MAC school, Ohio, finished 30 points behind us.

RE: 2016-2017 Wrestling
I agree, Burden. For every positive, there seemed to be a negative. I'm sure this season will be the same. Here are the results in an abbreviated fashion. I did this quickly so I apologize if I missed something.

125 - Simpson takes 5th, beating Dickson along the way. Not too shabby for a freshman. Where's Beard?

Simpson
6-1
LBF
4-2 (beat Dickson)
WBF
LBF
13-2

Dickson
0-15
WBF
2-4

133 - Tutolo remains undefeated, beating OU starter (Cameron Kelly)in the final. Kelly was the 13th seed at last year's NCAA championships. He also went 7-1 in MAC duals last year and finished 4th in the MAC tournament with a final record of 23-9. He finished 1/2/2/1 in high school (Ohio Division 2). Therefore, a very good win for Tutolo today.

9-1
21-6
7-2
5-4

141 - Ugh. Both of our wrestlers lost to the OU starter. A collective 0-4 day is NOT what is expected from these two. Someone better step up...

McCoy
LBF
LBF (OU)

Driscoll
2-10 (OU)
3-11

149 - Rooney looks to be the starter. He started slow but won 4 straight to finish 4-2 and take 4th.

O'Dor
7-8
4-14

Rooney
LBF
6-5
10-3
8-3
8-4 (beat the opponent who pinned him)
4-6

157 - Sparkman has wrestled well for the most part, but in both of his final matches, the score wasn't close in his losses. Heyob finished 6th despite going 2-3.

Spino
LBF
2-5

Heyob
11-3
13-5
LBF
3-10
LBF

Sparkman
7-4
5-2
6-4
8-6
0-16

165 - Bast wrestled well but had a medical forfeit in his final match (I think that was the case at Clarion as well) to take 6th. He looks to have the edge to be the starter next week.

Bast
2-18
3-2 (beat Walker)
6-2
9-7
3-11
Medical Forfeit

Walker
6-7
18-3
2-3

174 - James lost a close match to finish 2nd. He keeps his matches close - not the most exciting wrestler you will ever see but his strategy seems to be working.

8-6
6-3
WBF (OU)
4-1
4-5

184 - A disappointing day for this group. Spohn continues to be inconsistent.

Mast
WBF
1-7
Medical Forfeit

Stockman
6-7
3-2
3-8

Spohn
11-4
3-13
2-17

197 - Suglio takes 4th and seems to have adjusted to wrestling 40 or so pounds lighter than last year. I wonder if Conel will get to wrestle this year.

10-4
9-4
3-5
17-2
2-6

285 - Nye has also been inconsistent but he's winning his share of matches and finished 6th.

5-1
4-14
WBF
5-4
5-17
LBF
