FBS talk
Jerry Jr. recently made a public comment that he hopes to have Liberty playing FBS in a matter of months. These comments were made to city officials and other local college presidents. This seems like a rather odd statements to make with a specific time date of a few months. This could totally be wishful thinking or something could be in the works.

That is exciting talk and I wonder how real it may be. With JFJr's current high visibility with the election, and the wonderment surrounding his actions by many, if LU did get an invite it would likely be limited to SBC (seems unlikely with past history), C-USA (seems even more unlikely) or MAC (has there been any hint?). If it's not one of these 3 then what conference? The SBC prez resistance is well documented.

If, by some unbelievable act LU does get any invite, the LU would have achieved it's invite by what it brings in facilities and media, not by being the prime pick. But hey anyway it's achieved is a success for the program.

RE: FBS talk
It could be telling that he didn't say he hopes to be in a conference within months, but said playing FBS football within months. He could be taking about an Indy route. Maybe they've been discussing with the NCAA and he expects a decision in months OR I'm reading way to much into some off the cuff comments. :)

ODU's Selig very high on Liberty. Talking about a complete shake up for G5. Putting teams like ODU, JMU. UNCC, APP State, GA Southern in the same conference.

RE: FBS talk
I hope Liberty gets to move up to FBS and I'd rather it be in a conference rather than independent. I will not hold my breath or get my hopes up.

I don't know what would change in order for Liberty to move up to FBS as a member of an FBS conference short of a complete overhaul like Liberty Fan mentioned. The Big 12 is the only one geographically nearby that is actively looking. We've already been denied by the Sun Belt annually for the past several years. We've been told "no" by the MAC and C-USA too. The WAC-E fell apart. The American likely won't take us, nor any other conference.

Sadly and unfortunately I agree. One wonders why JFJr would say that. To appease the Lynchburg community? One has to wonder.

Na, I don't think the Lynchburg community gives 2 hoots about Liberty going FBS. I think there's something in the works, but who knows if it will actually happen.

With the wife out of town and a baseball game on in the background, I played the audio link that LF posted of the LU/FBS mention. The Wednesday 1-hour radio program from the Richmond station was "Why football for ODU" and "Why not football for VCU"? LU and JMU got mentions on Tuesday's program and the hosts made a 1 hour program on Wednesday from the mention. The essence was that Wood Seligh, AD of ODU said the big conferences are increasing and building their sports monetary empires and the smaller conferences are having their sports revenue bottoming out or diminishing and that regional rivalries of nearby schools was on his wish list. He stated, if it did happen, lots would need to happen to make it a reality. That JMU and LU would be positioned strongly in a new regional conference. He also mentioned App St, GaSo, ODU, UNC-Charlotte. The hosts stated the lack of rivalries with C-USA members, and the cost of travel as reason why ODU would favor such an realignment.

Good fodder. A very unlikely scenario with lots required to happen with a very low probability of success. This is where JMU and LU fans relish and rekindle any mention or hint of FBS.

Dang it! Why do they have to go and get my hopes up again? I just can't see the road to FBS. But I guess Jerry does.

LU going FBS seems unlikely to me.....at least the getting invite route does.

Maybe we're offering some conference $25,000,000 per team to let us join them. 03-lmfao

I understand if we did a lump buy in for a reasonable amount but not anything crazy.

Ok, I'll bite. What would be a reasonable amount?

RE: FBS talk
Here's an example of how the sports reporting buzz spreads. Channel 12 ABC in NC says 'Liberty gets chance for signature win as FBS rumors pick up". My guess is a sports reporter read the wire and saw the JFJr. FBS mention. No new news, just another re-report. Here's the link: http://www.wcti12.com/sports/liberty-get...p/92775992

RE: FBS talk
It may be coincidence but I was thinking earlier that maybe the Big South Conference and A-Sun football merger could be related with Liberty's potentially pending FBS move. Losing Liberty (or any other school) would lose the Big South's autobid to the playoffs so now may have been the time to act on the merger which would take effect sooner than a call-up would.

I would think paying the FBS conferences exit fee amount as the entry fee would be reasonable.

Entrance and Exit Fees for SBC and C-USA
Curtis brings up a good point on the exit fees SBC and C-USA teams will be required to pay. I did a quick Google search and here's the entrance and exit costs.

Exit Fees:
For C-USA, Chuck Landon, sports reporter for the Herald-Dispatch newspaper in Huntington, WVA reports on August 2, 2016 that those teams have to pay 2 years of revenue with a 14 month minimum notice. The precise article explained the various revenue streams that total the 2 years. At present C-USA departing teams will be required to pay $5.67 million dollars to the league. Landon's article is worth reading. Here's the link: http://www.herald-dispatch.com/sports/ma...7762a.html

The SBC exit fee is $2.5 million if less than 12-15 months and $2 million is more than 15 months. The SBC website is the source: http://sunbeltsports.org/news/2015/5/19/...aspx?path=

With these being the exit fees, if openings occur in the SBC and C-USA, what will LU, and others, pay in entrance fees?

Entrance Fees:
A SB Nation report of May 19 2015, at http://www.underdogdynasty.com/2015/9/10...ation-for, said Coastal paid $2 million in entrance fees and that NMSU offered $4.4 million package with $2.4 being an offer to help offset travel cost for visiting teams in an attempt to sweeten the pot for membership. It must not have been sweet enough.

In April 2013 WKU paid a $2 million dollar entrance for the C-USA.

RE: FBS talk
I thought Liberty made an offer to the Sun Belt to pay each member to "buy" their way into the conference and that was very negatively received. The Sun Belt schools thought that we were flaunting our money and cemented the perception that we'd buy our way to championships and we were very different from the rest of the conference at our cores.

LU may have made that offer. The reply was simply a statement of financial details move up and moving on teams would likely incur.

I remember Jr saying they had made an offer that was very generous. I believe it was in the range of 8 million. Don't quite me in that, but that number comes to mind. If the right opportunity came along I could see Liberty offering 20 million.
