No bid for Columbia. Dawn Staley wielded her power. "Lack of availability of full service hotel properties" was given as the reason.

@ReggieWLTX: BREAKING - USC & the Columbia Regional Sports Council will not submit a bid to host the 2017 NCAA men's basketball tournament 1st/2nd rounds

They will submit a bid for 19-22.

Just a question. Does Furman discriminate? Maybe have USC-Upstate host if that's the case.

I have no idea. I know that they were once affiliated with the SC Baptist Convention, but they broke ties in the early 90s and became independent. So, I would guess the answer is no, but I don't know much about the school beyond it being a beautiful campus and a great place for a walk around the lake.

The Southern Conference is making the bid for Greenville. Confirmed http://www.greenvilleonline.com/story/sp.../90727166/

David Caraviello of the Post and Courier made a good point talking about why Columbia is not doing a bid for '17.

Columbia only has about 2,500 hotel rooms, compared to the Charleston area's 7,200. Greenville has less than Columbia, but you also have Spartanburg nearby with another couple thousand rooms.

With only 7 months lead time, there isn't a lot of buffer for cities to dole out space. That may be why only a couple of cities have announced they're bidding so far. Here's an article with more.

Dayton is bidding, so I guess this would make them the leader:

Always thought UNC and Duke had massive unfair advantage with Greensboro as an annual NCAA site, there were some years when those schools didn't have to leave their state to make the final 4. It was ridiculous.

I wouldn't say Dayton is the leader by any stretch of the imagination. Indy is hosting the tournament 1st/2nd rounds already. I seriously doubt they would put 2 sites so close together.

If anyone is interested, I've compiled a list of potential hosts for 2019-2030. Just give me a PM or, if you'd like, I'll post them in a new thread.
