My understanding is that this grand jury is looking at doings in Jefferson County. I suspect that it has more to do with things like the Water Works and City Hall than the BoT. We can hope.

Not good with that news coming just a few months before the Nov vote on local taxes.

That amount wouldn't even pay the City Council's cell phone bill.

The employees of Jefferson County work for the Jefferson County Commission (official title) this does refer to the commissioners themselves necessarily.

Quote:Sources say the alleged scheme took place in the county’s information technology department and involved phones and tablets purchased with taxpayer dollars. However, the devices were not used by the county, sources say.

The investigation will likely expand to other individuals and/or entities who may have played a role in the alleged scheme, sources believe.

My hope is that there are a lot of city council folks with free phones & tablets.

The amount of money isnt a big deal, these charges themselves are not a big deal. The fact that they have a grand jury that can force people to testify under oath is huge. People caught dead to rights getting a free tablet might be willing to sing a pretty song about other going on in Jefferson County in exchange for a lighter sentence, and then the probe could blow up into something huge.

Knowing how things work in this state, its more likely some junior IT guy is going to be sent to federal pound you in the ### prison and then they will proudly declare JEFFCO free of corruption .

RE: AG's Public Corruption Unit setting up special grand jury in Birmingham
Keep in mind that ALL charges against Larry Langford that resulted in his imprisonment were from his time on the Jeffco Commission. There was not a single charge based on his tenure as Mayor of B'ham. That time as mayor only drew humorous comments about beluga whales, Olympics in B'ham and "breaking ground" for the MPF.

Because of this state's Constitutional ban on home rule, the city has to rely upon the Jeffco government (Jeffco Personnel Board) for the hiring and promoting of much of the city's police and firefighter personnel - perhaps many more..
