Kudos to those who traveled
from UK message board:

"Atmosphere was weak tonight. The Southern Miss fans were louder than we were, when one compares the amount of people."

I was there with 3 others and the USM crowd was vocal throughout. There were a great amount of students there as well. On quite a few occasions the USM fans would start a U-S-M cheer or Black-Gold to which UK would come back with Go Big Blue. As soon as the team scored or got a stop our fans started right back up and the UK fans started taking notice as more and more of them kept looking our direction to the point they were probably wishing their team would shut us up.

Great job to those who attended and hopefully it carries over to the upcoming home games and beyond

I was lucky enough to attend the game and it was one of the best visiting sections I've ever been in. We were loud all game, except for the second quarter.

Now, with that said, Kentucky is a strange one. I didn't get "college atmosphere" from them. Everything felt very NFLish, in the worst of ways. The fans were there, but never seemed super into it (even when we got close, they didn't get loud to try to help their team out). Their tailgating was atrocious (everyone in a parking lot and their students on some random hill looking like they forgot their tailgate tents). It just all felt very un-college to me.

Now I'm sure that changes if you go to a basketball game in Lexington, but their football atmosphere was average at best. I've seen better at plenty of G5 schools.

Couldn't be much worse than the Ruston experience last year. Total bush league.

Our makeshift student section got quite rowdy and at times felt as if we were louder than the UK students. There were times when the UK fans would confront us, flip is the bird, or point some of us out- especially in the 2nd quarter. The best feeling was when the UK fans would look at us confused as if they had never see a student section excited for football even when we were down. I know many of us are still voiceless today. Best away atmosphere I've been a part of.

I too was there ... good friends/semi-UK fans because it's where they live not where they went to school and we went to the game together. By pre-arrangement we sat 1st half in the USM section with our tickets and the 2nd half amongst his local friends who had some extra tickets....two completely different experiences. USM on the ropes and our fans were still vocal. KY on the ropes and it felt like a funeral visitation for the old lady down the street.

That they did and from my perspective/point of view our students kept it classy to the point several times when UK had an injured player our students were telling other USM fans who hadn't realized there was an injured player yet to "quite down". As soon as the injured UK players appeared OK our students were the 1st ones to applaud and start right back cheering/chanting.

And I agree the tailgating experience just felt odd almost to the point they were just there to be there. I did like they fact that they didn't have the Alabama/LSU fan mentality (probably because they haven't won like those 2) in that we were never taunted/berated and I never felt unsafe before or after the game while walking though their fans who were tailgating

We waited with our cooler by the alumni association's tailgate for about an hour after the game finishing our leftover beverages before walking back to our hotel. As we were walking, there were a couple times when we remained alert because there were Kentucky fans around (and we knew how fans at LSU, UM, or Bama were if they lost) and we were expecting to get heckled or insulted or threatened- instead we were congratulated and told "good game". It was the weirdest thing.

Also, we started to openly quiet ourselves and the other fans down because we accidentally missed an instance when a UK Safety was injured (only a few of us saw it) and continued to be rowdy. We all noticed after the fact as he was being helped off, but the damage was done and got quite a few dirty looks and choice words from the UK fans near us. So we tried to do better and be classier from then on. We even stopped an S-E-C chant from being started before that last fumble (about three minutes left) because we knew that it wasn't over until it's over.

RE: Kudos to those who traveled
While walking back to the parking garage after the game, we urged all walking around us to come to Hattiesburg next year for the 1st game. They had never heard of the place. But when told that the campus is about an hour and a half north of New Orleans, the away game for them became quite enticing.

RE: Kudos to those who traveled
I had a couple of drunk Kentucky fans come over into our section just after half time when they were still ahead. They were getting in peoples faces and saying Southern Miss sux etc... they eventually came to my row and my son ( a special needs kid that went to Dubard, now 18 y/o) was verbally accosted by them. I stepped in and explained he was special needs and if they as so much accidentally touched him, I would end them right there where they stood. They sobered up immediately and started apologizing saying they were just having fun. I told them, no you're just being a couple of drunk di'' heads and the safest thing for them was to go back to their seats and watch their team get stomped in the second half. They left and the rest is history!

I seriously considered making the trip, but I have a torn pectoral muscle and my girlfriend had to work. I may make every game from here on out. I do think this team is special.
