They were playing a SWAC team, beating Southern by 17 is almost like a loss.

A win is a win.

The offense actually played pretty well but I think the coaching staff was experimenting with personnel the entire game and holding back a lot. Plenty of receivers and running backs saw action plus the offensive line was changed up a lot during the game. QB Smith had 208 yards passing and 150 rushing. Another RB had 118 rushing/TD and a walk-on RB had 57 with a TD.

Defensively we had to replace nine starters from last year and learn a new defense. It got better as the game went along but I hope it gets much better much more rapidly in the next couple of weeks. We're 1-0 and that's what everyone expected. On to the next game.....

As to looking terrible...and, yeah, it wasn't that pretty...this could be one of the reasons as posted by a Rivals reporter:

"One of the goals for the Southern game was to play a lot of players, and that was achieved. Five Linebackers, thirteen Defensive Backs, and twelve Defensive Linemen played. That depth may increase this week as Terry Ausborne, Logan Latin, and Luke Hedrick will look to return from injury."

I watched the replay and thought you guys looked ok. The team looked well coached and fundamentally sound to me. Looking forward to an improved ulm this season.
