and the picture is of Jones running the ball out of the end zone on a punt that could easily have been a safety - or worse. At least he got it all the way out to around the 10 yard line.

Also read the article about the Whitmer loss to Detroit Catholic Central. Whitmer QB is only a freshman. Need to get him on the radar at UT.

RE: Woodside guides Rockets to victory
I'll confess I had some concerns about the defense going into the season---not about the talent level, but about experience and depth, but with the exception of one or two plays all night the defense was outstanding. The offense had trouble getting started early and then kind of backed off a bit at the end but for the middle 60% of the game they were hitting hard on all cylinders and maybe even exceeded the high expectations everyone had for them.

Actually I really liked some the things that I did NOT see as well or better than what I did see. Namely: 1) the (almost) total absence of false starts on the OL, 2) the absence of dropped passes by receivers. The strip of Cody Thompson hurt but it was not a dropped pass and it result of fighting for extra yards not a case of plastic/stone hands. Its probably uncharitable to say so but my thoughts at the time were that Russell is gone and Jones saved his mental mistakes for the special teams, not his receiving duties last night. 3) the absence of bone headed penalties ---late hits, hits out of bounds, etc. 4) consistently good snaps and exchanges all night

Its still too early to being looking ahead but this could be a really special season----probably not a New Year's Day Game type special (which I think last year could have been) but still pretty nice. Although it is very early, at this point I am impressed with the job Candle has done in rebuilding most of the coaching staff and yet maintaining a very smooth seamless transition. This was much different situation than Campbell had to deal with because a lot of the staff chose to remain at UT rather than follow Beckman to Illinois and that wasn't the case this time.

Couldn't decide if this deserved a new thread, belonged in the game thread, belonged here or belonged someplace else. Then figured I was overanalyzing again. If somebody starts a thread about this, I'll just delete this post.

Anyway, UT's quarterback is the MAC West Offensive Player of the Week. 03-2thumbsup

Whatever his name is. 03-wink

And I think at least one person here predicted he would win this, but I couldn't find that post.

SOMEBODY already predicted that here. Actually, I suspect a lot of folks did! Post is on the game thread. Congratulations to him.

I know its only one game but he looked pretty good in all phases.I for one wasnt sure about his arm strength but he made some longer throws over the middle that were spot on. He has always had presence on the field... We will be tough to beat if he continues this level of play.

Last year our receivers were constantly dropping passes from Ely. I believe they were not used to getting such hard throws. Woodside throws a ball that is easier to catch. He let Roberts use his athleticism to make his 2 TD catches instead of throwing it into his gut.

I was thinking the same thing. I thought Woodside threw a great, catchable ball. On the other hand, I think our SR, stud receiver from last yr. Russell was on the dropping end of a lot of those balls.

Woodside does throw a nice catch-able ball. His release gives the ball a "tip up" orientation vs. a "tip down". Much easier to catch a "tip up" pass.

Ely threw lasers but he was damn accurate.

Go Rockets!

IMO, that was the best UT Quarterback performance that I have seen in quite awhile. Probably since the Gradkowski/Brian Jones era. I knew from the road game at Cincinnati that he was capable of it. Hopefully that will continue. The defensive play was unexpected and fabulous. Keep building baby!!

Woodside also a candidate (one of eight) for the Quarterback Star of the Week. Vote early and often. Voting ends Friday.

Good point. I'll start one unless you or someone else beat me to it.
