Quote:COLDWATER, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Branch County man was found dead in a car in a lake on Monday.
Investigators say they got the tip from another man who was in the car.
It's a strange case--that's what authorities on scene as well as investigators have said time and time again on Monday, after the discovery of the body on Cary Lake.
Crews have been out on the lake since mid-morning and won't likely wrap up for another couple of hours, so the investigation is far from over.
Branch County Undersheriff Keith Eichler says around 8:30 this morning, a man stopped by the sheriff's office to report an accident, but didn't make a big deal out of it.
They soon found out there was a lot more to this situation than they were told.
A deputy learned the man who made the report was actually a passenger in a car, which lost control on Cary Lake Drive and ended up in the lake.
At some point, the passenger bailed out of the car.
Eichler says the twist is that the crash happened around 1 or 2 this morning, but wasn't reported until some 6 or 7 hours later.
We've learned the driver was a 41-year-old Bronson man.
Crews are still working at this hour to get his convertible out of the lake.
"The vehicle is upside down, and we're trying to preserve anything. From what we also understand it's a convertible, so we're also trying to save anything that might be there and not drag it along the bottom of the lake while we're pulling it out," said Eichler.
The driver's name has not yet been released. Right now, investigators are working to determine if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
