Campbell then moved the practices to grass to reduce the injuries and that seemed to help a lot. I don't recall if the turf was replaced since then or not. If not, maybe they need to move practices back to the grass field - and get the turf replaced. Have no idea if these latest injuries - all in the legs - was because of turf or some other reason.

GB has a brand new surface. The increase in leg injuries is probably due in part to changes made in attempts to reduce concussions.

Good point Boca. My son's HS team is teaching to tackle by going low, head outside the leg and inside arm/shoulder splitting the legs...I was always taught "low man wins" but that was more about leverage in blocking or getting off a block. It's interesting to see how things have changed. When it came to tackling, I was taught to keep your head up and bury your facemask in the ball carriers chest, wrap your arms and drive your legs. If guys are now being taught to go in low, we're going to see an increase in knee injuries. I'm sure this is being taught to try and reduce concussions...not sure how I feel about it. Anyone who has caught a knee to the side of the helmet can attest that it's just as bad, if not worse than helmet to helmet or helmet to shoulder.

oh yeah - only concussion I had in my life was a knee to the side of the helmet when I was blocking on a reverse. Did the cross body block and caught the knee in the head when the guy turned to pursue the runner on the reverse. I was standing in the huddle for the next play and when the huddle broke, I started walking in the opposite direction of the line of scrimmage. Not that I remember it, but it is what I was told I did.

NBC Sports put up a short story on Coleman's injury.

If his freshman redshirt wasn't for medical reasons, he won't be able to get a 6th season, which would be unfortunate for him.

Actually you can have a regular freshman redshirt year and then you can apply for a medical redshirt later in your career due to injury. the reason there was no medical for last year was he played half the season (6 games).

Coleman will have to do what Ely did. Except Ely had a transfer year that caused some "confusion".....

True that Ely's transfer year complicated things, but I thought the crux of the matter was whether his freshman redshirt at Alabama was for medical reasons or not. If it was not, he was not eligible to be considered for another year. If it was, there was a shot. UT argued the latter.

I'm no expert, but as I read the rules, it says something like the athlete had to be deprived of 2 or more years of playing, by circumstances out of his/her control. This year's injury would be 1. As you said in 2015 he played in too many games for that to be considered a redshirt year. If the freshman redshirt was by choice, that doesn't meet the standard either. But like I said, I'm no expert.

Also, I have no knowledge of why he redshirted his freshman year.

Coleman's injury was a non contact injury, happened while they were doing some exercises, Just something that happened.
