RE: Zack Bryant Commits To Be UAB’s Next Great Point Guard
Here's the reality with Zack Bryant...

From all the video I've seen and what I've read from those who have watched him, he is used as more of a combo guard. That doesn't mean he can't be molded in to more of a true point or a scoring point (like Kyrie Irving). It's important that our coaches pitch him as the "point guard of the future" whether he'll be used that way or not. Getting a commitment from a guy like this is who well known by his peers in the AAU circuit is HUGE. Having ZB will most definitely help us get others. Ehsan is either really good or really lucky to get a well known point guard to commit first and fairly early in the recruiting season on top of that.

I think it's a great pickup. Does this hurt us with Jamal Johnson?

Jamal Johnson is more of a shooting guard... Bryant being tabbed as point guard keeps Johnson in play.

Not at all. In fact, it could help get Jamal to UAB.
Since this commitment, assume anywhere Alex Reese, Herb Jones and/or Jamal Johnson are that our coaching staff is close by.

Would love to get anyone of those guys. What about Garrison Brooks?

Can't imagine our coaches will miss many Spain Park or Pelham games this year.

IMO, Herb and Garrison are long gone. The focus is on Johnson and Reese now. Reese is a long shot but we've had our foot in the door with him for a very long time. His mom has been high on UAB for years and has said she wants him to stay close to home. There is another reason why he may chose UAB but I won't delve in to his personal life here.

I saw someone mention Hurtado in one of these threads. He's been off the radar all summer playing in Venezuela. That's a good and a bad thing. We've likely had little communication with him and we wouldn't be able to see how he is developing in summer ball. On the plus side he's not out being recruited by other coaches and teams. I still like our chances with him but there is a lot of unknowns with him. His recruitment has been super quiet.

While I'm on this recruiting tangent I'll go ahead and comment on some other guys.

Brian Thomas -- Haven't heard a single thing about him since his official visit in June. His Atlanta AAU team has been playing all summer and for whatever reason he hasn't been with them. IMO, he's our best chance to sign a big man this class.

Dedric Boyd -- He narrowed his list down the other day and we were on it. I get the feeling he wants us more than we want him at the moment. Players with his skill set are a dime a dozen.

Peyton Broughton -- Listed us in his top 4 last week and honestly this is the first time I've ever heard of the kid. I'd group him with Boyd as far as our interest.

Jimmy will go more in depth in his update that's coming out the week after next. I'm curious to see if we'll get anymore official visits before school starts. I'm thinking no since we are focusing on so many local guys.

And I haven't been following recruiting closely until this year. I'm sure you've seen his highlights. The level of competition is really suspect to me. We over lap with Clemson on a ton of guys which is likely due to Richie Riley (before he left).

No idea. The guys I spoke on are the ones we've been watching this summer (from what I've seen/heard). I like the juco kid and think we need a juco kid this class.

From what I think I know, we are currently only targeting one juco. Also, fwitik, we are still very involved with Jones.

Man I hope so. He might be the best player out of all we are recruiting right now. Tyler Polley was but he is off the board.

Were we in on the Spain Park player who moved to a private school in Florida for his senior year?

Austin Wiley. Yes, we were. He committed to Auburn early in the process as everyone expected because his parents went there. However, him moving to Florida should have Auburn folks worried because I think he is looking to see his stock go up more than going there to improve his game.

I think the Florida move is to improve the odds of his being a one-and-done player...
