Interestingly, that game @ Nebraska-Omaha looks like a new addition.

We are also supposed to be playing @UT Arlington, at a date TBD.

While the men play at ODU on New Year's Eve, the women play at ODU on New Year's Day. Both teams then travel to Charlotte. So New Year's in Norfolk...not exactly Times Square. AAgin wonder how attendance will look for those two games, and maybe that will help Rice's teams a bit on the road?

It depends on what time the game is at.. If it's a 1 P.M. game, I don't see ODU having bad attendance.

As the season is not too far away, I'm also wondering what our primary and secondary rotations will look like this season? A bunch of new players, a few exits from last season, and the graduation of Max Guercy, plus the return of Jackson makes this a more interesting puzzle to try to put together. Thoughts?

Would think our two deep could be something like this. I'm giving more credence to vets. The good news is, I would hope we would be getting regular playing time from 10-12 guys as opposed to our 7 man rotation last year.

1 - Evans
2 - Jackson
3 - Koulechov
4 - Letcher-Ellis
5 - Drone

1 - Lott
2 - Cashaw
3 - Mency
4 - Harrison
5 - Meyer

For what it's worth, having seen them around campus, the freshman who passes the "eye test" the most is Corey Douglas.

Granted, he is as old as some juniors at Rice, in that he is already 20.

Figured him as more of a defensive sub, will be interesting to see what he brings on the offensive side.

I really like Chad Lott and predict he will play a major role this year if he doesn't make the starting lineup. A real talent before the injury and a really great kid.

From what I've heard Ako Adams will be the second point guard. Adams and Meyer have been the two most impressive freshmen so far. Of course a lot can change by opening day, and even more by season's end. I personally think Drone and Egor will have reduced minutes even if they start.

Isn't Lott more of a point guard than either Evans or Jackson? I can see us going with a 3-guard, small lineup for extended periods...with Evans, Lott and Jackson in the lineup at the same time, joining a couple bigs. Drone may start games, but I'd be very surprised if he gets more minutes than Quez, Harrison or even Meyers.

That's the kind of thing I was wondering about, too, Walt. It's nice to have options and choices for a change, isn't it?

I also wonder how the scoring is expected to be spread around. Much as we're all touting Evans, and we should, with a stronger lineup, and some position adjustments, what range do you see his scoring average settling into?

Last season, we seemed to get our team scoring average up, especially as the season went on. Along with the expected defensive improvements, this should help get us more victories that slipped away due to the thin roster the last two years. I'm sure there will be another adjustment period at the beginning, with so many new/returning faces. But by conference, I expect us to be a significantly formidable team for others to handle. Hopefully we will present match-up problems no matter what the other teams do, and start to dictate the game on the floor rather than having to always react.

With our new-found depth (for the first time since Rhoades arrived), I expect more fast break points as we deploy the press on a more frequent basis. Depth should also allow us to play tighter defense without the concern of getting into foul trouble (which we could not afford the last two seasons). I'd expect the PPG numbers for both Evans and Egor to come down this season, as we will have far more scoring options. On the plus side, this will reduce the number of double teams by the opposing on those two. I'd be very surprised and disappointed if we don't have at least 4 players averaging double-digit PPG this season (Evans, Jackson, Egor, Quez).

Ouch.
Yeah I buy into the "best RPI opponent available" argument, but the punch line was too good to pass up.

Shows the multi-year effect of last year's injuries (that a more marketable (home) game could not be worked out). Our RPI is going to irritate a lot of teams as we beat them.

Hard to tell how much people will improve, but last year we depended too much on Evans/Koulechov having big games. Nobody else could carry the load, and any faltering by one of those two put us in trouble. I would expect MLE and Cashaw to get a little more going offensively, and it will be very nice to have a proven scorer like Jackson back to help shoulder the load. Drone is what he is. There will certainly be opportunities for some of the younger players to get scoring roles, so we'll have to see. I'd expect Evans in the 18ppg range and Koulechov and Jackson in the 15 ppg range. Koulechov in particular seemed to tire down the stretch and his efficiency faltered...hopefully we don't put as much stress on him to score this year and he can get his %'s back to a respectable level.

I think Jackson will drain a lot of 3's and average more than 15 ppg. Is he the best shooter on the team?

By most accounts, Lott has the skills to be starting PG. From his high school video, he seems like a good ball handler, though still appears to be a scoring guard. I would like to keep Evans at the 2 for most of the game. But that could mean either Jackson, Quez, Drone or Koulechov come off the bench. I can see this lineup being the crunch time lineup:

Lott
Evans
Jackson
Koulechov
Letter-Ellis

But can't underrate Drone. He's improved every year and his size helps. I can also see Jackson coming off the bench, which would be a luxury, to have a 5th year senior who can score come off the bench. Either way, great problem to have! Hope Harrison (or is it Harrington) and some of the other freshmen can contribute down low. Also hope we don't miss Guercy too much. If Lott can handle the point, we should be fine, but otherwise we're bit thin at PG (unless freshmen are ready to carry the load there) and may not have somebody to break the press and keep turnovers down like Guery could. We should have more size, more athleticism, more depth, and more experience if we stay healthier. Should be a fun year.

I've heard from some players that Ako Adams has been seriously impressive in practice. His driving abilities have been hard to guard even by the more experienced guards.

I want to hear more about Robert Martin. He averaged 26ppg in the NEPSAC, one of the best high school basketball leagues in the country.

He's the guy I'm looking for too. Online recruiters/scouts loved him, and wings who follow the Draymond Green mold (scoring, rebounding, defending, handling) are the new hot commodities.

I see Quez being the first man off the bench (such a change in pace-remember Michael Harris did not start his entire freshman year but led the team in scoring, FG % and rebounds-all 4 years), followed by Cashaw, who is a terrific complimentary player. Both of these should be great this year. When was the last time that we had so many quality players that you were worried about whether there enough starts to go around. I am so ready for this season!!!!
