VCU basketball coach Rhoades signs two-year extension to contract

Quote:RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia Commonwealth University announced its men’s basketball coach Mike Rhoades has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him on the Rams' sideline through the 2026-27 season.

“It’s an honor to be the coach at VCU, and I never take it for granted,” Rhoades said in a statement. “I’m excited to continue to build this the right way, by investing in great people and players. I’m excited to help our guys move forward.”

Rhoades has compiled an 80-43 record in four years at VCU and led the Rams to the Atlantic 10 title in 2019 and NCAA Tournament berths in 2019 and 2021.

Her's hoping Coach Pera can lead us to a conference title this year.

I'm just confused why we haven't scheduled VCU at any point. You basically know VCU is going to be a 25-150 KenPom team every season. Pera has a relationship with the entire staff. Probably would be one of the easiest good home and homes we could get.

I believe it's because the 2 years becomes 5 when added to the time remaining on his current contract.

Weird, but noticed today that once again at this juncture in the season, both Rice and VCU have identical 7-4 records. I would imagine Rice would have a few more wins if not for the cancellations. Not sure the opponents are exactly comparable, but nevertheless, it is somewhat curious to note.

Both teams tied again at 10-6 after Davidson beat VCU with a beautiful game-ending 3-pt shot by Michael Jones who was unconscious, connecting on 8 of 9 3s, including the game winner with 3 seconds to play. Here's a link to video of the final :10 and the shot. The Wildcats held the Rams to two points over the final 5:23. Sounds very familiar.

Later in the above-linked story, Rice did get a mention, albeit in reference to UAB.

link to game story & box: Davidson tops VCU for 14th straight win

VCU Rams 10-6 .600
Rice Ouch 10-6 .600
They're neck and neck as they head around the turn. Who will win?

We still follow Toad’s career. Maybe we are obsessed with an ex who left us for somebody younger and prettier.

Those are just the first few of a bunch more threads that came up...

Guess it's like bar-talk without the bar or the hangover.

Hmm, while waiting for another game to begin, happened to pass by the St. Joe's game and noticed they were up big early with the other side scoreless. When reading the play-by-play gave me flashbacks to many such starts from the Owls of yesteryore, so I got hooked in to see what would happen. How many times have we missed umpteen layups and had sloppy play early that ends up costing us a game? Most teams go through brain-fart periods in games, just struck me peculiar ollowing the pplay-by-play that day. Guess it's like the Vietnam vet who has unwanted flashbacks that seem randomly provoked. That said, VCU ended up wiiing their game 70-54 despite the terrible start and sloppy first half for both teams. Sometimes you get into a tailspin despite your intentions, but some teams seem to be able to get out of it and right their ships better than others. I would say that coahing leadership is somewhat a factor in those instances. Some folks like to follow along and see how things play out when things change...others do not.

When you get a new head coach, most hope that they can do better than the last guy. I think Pera has that potential, yet so far has not realized it.
Standings as of now: VCU 11-6 .647, Rice 11-7 .611. Close; real close though.

also...saw the Spiders take apart the Rams in the A-10 Tourney and they made them look bad, too. After losing the season series 0-2 to VCU, finishing 6th in the A-10 at 19-12 (10-8) including two straight regular season-ending losses to St. Bonaventure and Dayton, Richmond roared back to life in their conference Tourney and ran a gauntlet of Rhode Island (64-59), VCU (75-64), Dayton (68-64) and finally beating Davidson, who led the A-10 the whole season (64-62) and steal an autobid to the NCAAs. For consolation, VCU (21-9, 14-4) could at least look to the fact that it lost to the eventual League Tourney Champ as it will now get to play Princeton (23-6, 12-2, first in Ivy League regular season) Tuesday at home in the opening round of the NIT.
