Isn't this going to turn all the G5 (and less) schools into feeders for the P5? And yet, the P5 conferences have nowhere near a majority vote in the NCAA decision-making bodies: 5/20 on the D1 Board of Directors and 7/40 in the D1 Council, for example.

I wish that some day (soon!!) the non-P5 representatives would vote according to their constituents' needs/interests.

But I'm reminded of a post I made here nearly 7 years ago, when our President Leebron was on the D1 BOD:

Quote:That reminded me of President Leebron's visit in February to speak to local alumni. He gave an excellent talk about the state of the university & challenges. Surely it was similar to those given earlier on campus. But aside from saying that he hoped we'd beat A&M in the fall's first football dame, there was no mention of athletics.

So in the Q&A, I asked him about his experiences as a member of the NCAA Div 1 Board of Directors. He said: "I went to my first board meeting recently, and it was not an inspiring experience. We voted to lift the cap on entertainment spending for athletes. The vote was 15-1. I’ll let you figure out who the '1' was. It’s not about the money; it’s about how much money."

Later, I asked him about the chances that university presidents would try to reform the system to something more equitable. He wasn't encouraging. It clearly seemed that this was a battle with such a low chance of winning that it wasn't worth fighting.

MyBB RE: Rhoades/ 2016 Rice basketball Thread
the mosue has Texas tech as the big winner in this year's transfer sweepstakes. Not so much for former Rice Coach Rhoades at VCU.

Quote:Texas Tech: Chris Beard has landed key transfers in each of the past two years, but he might have had his best group yet this spring. He received commitments from Mac McClung (Georgetown) and Marcus Santos-Silva (VCU) (arguably the nation's best available transfer), both of whom are hoping to be eligible to play immediately, and also picked up Wichita State transfer Jamarius Burton as a sit-out option. Santos-Silva graduated from VCU earlier this month, so he should be good to go immediately, while McClung is hoping for a waiver. Both McClung and Santos-Silva would be two of the top 10 immediately eligible transfers and would likely start right away for the Red Raiders.

Ex-VCU big man Marcus Santos-Silva transferring to Texas Tech

Also, former Rice player Drew Peterson gets a mention:

Quote:USC: Andy Enfield hit the transfer market hard this spring, landing five players, three of whom will be eligible right away next season. The three graduate transfers are Isaiah White (Utah Valley), Chevez Goodwin (Wofford) and Tahj Eaddy (Santa Clara). White and Goodwin will help the Mobley brothers in the frontcourt, while Eaddy will hope to regain his sophomore-year form when he averaged 15.0 points. The Trojans also landed Big West Defensive Player of the Year Joshua Morgan, a 6-foot-11 center from Long Beach State who still has three years to play, and Rice transfer Drew Peterson.

Sounds like Drew will have a really good seat for future Trojan basketball games.

At least he’ll be in the arena? May be the only way to see a game in person.

Couldn't help noticing Rhodes has VCU at 8-2 so far, just like....Pera has Rice at 8-2 so far.
Now, Pera's done well to re-load after the seemingly now annual defections (due mostly to crap NCAA rules that penealize smart mid-major recruiters like Pera seems to be), but I wonder if Rhodes' VCU 8-2 team could handle Pera's Rice 8-2 team, simply because of some of the "competition" we've played so far. Hope Pera's Rice team has a great year and wins 20 or more. Wonder if he'll call Rhodes about scheduling a series in near future? Would be interesting to see, and might draw a few more out to Tudor. Either way, will keep an eye on how VCU does this year in comparison to the Owls.

VCU is #55 in Pomeroy; Rice is #225

I'm not really sure how much stock you can place in Pomeroy when they still have UTSA at #200 and Rice at #225.

UTSA is 4-5 with wins over UT-Permian Basin, Sul Ross, Our Lady of the Lake (all non-Division 1) and a very bad Lamar team. They have losses at UT-Rio Grande Valley, Oklahoma (huge loss), Oregon State (closer loss) and the two to Rice.

Rice is 8-2 with wins over Incarnate Word, Our Lady, LeTourneau, HBU (2 wins), New Orleans and UTSA (2 wins), and the two losses to New Mexico and at Sam Houston State.

At best, you can cancel out our Sam Houston loss with UTSA's UTRGV loss, and then you can compare UTSA's win over Lamar to Rice's 4 wins over Southland Conference teams.

I still count 6 Ivy and Patriot League teams ranked ahead of Rice in Pomeroy even though neither of those leagues are playing this season. The bottom line is Pomeroy ratings can't be given much credence yet - certainly once you get past the top 50 teams at the very least.

Fair enough.

Cool, I'll use Massey as my go to ratings for now (ours will go down - we'll probably end up in the 200's).

BTW, the Patriot League is playing games so I was wrong about that. They just weren't playing NC games. I see that BU and Holy Cross are playing a conference game tomorrow in which both teams will have to wear masks (a first they believe for a basketball game). The two teams are also playing later in the week at Holy Cross but only BU has the mask rule for home games. BU will wear masks for all of its games, but in the road games, they'll be the only team wearing a mask.

My younger cousin is a swimmer at Holy Cross and according to him, there’s a lot of blowback at both the college administration and Patriot League that they’ve bent over backwards to have basketball play, but haven’t even made an attempt to have a season for other sports. It’s especially ridiculous when Massachusetts is playing high school sports except for Football (season begins on 2/20) and Wrestling.

One thing I’ll give Rice credit for is, at the very least, they seem to be trying to put on a season for all sports.

This is so weird...both teams are currently 10-4, albeit Rice is 4-2 in conference and VCU is 3-2. Interesting. Glad we're keeping pace. Go Owls!
