RE: Rice Fall Camp Blogs and Videos
The issue with running a traditional 3O attack is that I don't think we have too many guys that would be great "A-backs." Dillard, Walter, and Ellerbe I think could be decent, but Davis, Stewart, and Esukpa are B-Backs in my opinion. I don't think we really have many WRs that could play A-back. Maybe German.

Could be a long season...

what about Stehling specifically?

RE: Rice Fall Camp Blogs and Videos
Here is my brief take from the scrimmage...

Was there with a good friend of mine who walked on to the Baylor football team back in 1990. He is also a Rice fan (don't run him off lol).

Offense: We both agreed that our run game showed signs of life as the scrimmage went on. Run blocking while initially good got better. Pass blocking needs a lot of work. Thought that Stehling did well moving while in the pocket. Didn't like the first throw into triple coverage. I thought that Tyner was destined for a position shift to TE. I'm not sure of that anymore. He did well. I thought that aside from the potential pick 6, Granato did well. I don't know if that was a bad throw or an incorrect route. We need a passing attack that isn't predicated on long developing routes. Very interesting that Jack Dill is running with the 2nd team on the offensive line. Noticed that Kenneth Thompson was hurt, so that might be the reason. Could be the first Offensive lineman to get game reps as a true freshman since Scott Mitchell. That turned out well, so we will see. Speaking of run game, we have a wealth of riches from Davis' elusiveness, Walter's speed, Dillard's power and patience, and Esukpa's combination of all. No German at WR as I assume that he is still recovering. He can be a game breaker at WR so hopefully we get him back soon. Pollard looks to have a good year and Wright will be steady. Yet, we still need speed at that position. I would love for Houston Robert to get moved back to offense. I know that we have coverage issues, but Robert was more of an offensive player in high school. My opinion is that we are not doing that great of a job of converting offensive players to safety. Not sure that Destri White or Houston Robert will help on defense as much as they would on offense. To be fair, Xavier Webb and Paul Porras turned into multi year starters; Anyway, I say that because Robert's 4.37 speed could really open up the underneath passing game as a deep threat. While Pollard, Walter, and Ellerbee have good speed, we don't seem to be utilizing them as deep threats. However, offensively we were pretty vanilla with our play calling.

Defense:
Looked great in the RedZone early on. Blew up the line on many occasions especially on passing downs. True freshman defensive lineman Elijah Garcia (all 6-5/310 lbs of him) was not suited up. I think at this point he is bound for a redshirt. On the other hand, true freshman Myles Adams was very impressive and at times unblockable. A redshirt would be good for him but depth may force the issue. If so, be on the lookout for number 64. Didn't recall see McGaskey play though he was suited up. Tackling was a mixed bag. The defense swarmed and ran well to the ball, but then at times would go for the big hit or not secure the wrap up. Secondary seems to have more speed; of a particular note, JT Ibe looks more confident out there at Free Safety.

Special Teams: Did not like the fact that we were showing off potential trickery with Jack Fox and Hayden Tobola during the special teams drills. But with that said, I did appreciate the special teams emphasis. Jack Fox definitely has a live leg, just needs to develop consistency. I think that Tobola only missed one FG. There were some occasions that looked as if a block could occur so hopefully that gets cleaned up.

Overall, it was good to be in the stands again. We have a lot of work to do. A lot. With that said, this team will go as far as the Oline takes us. There is a lot of potential on that line. If I were to play to our strengths, I would adopt a lot of what Baylor does offensively. We need to incorporate the zone read pass option.

Yeah, a little bit odd to have a scrimmage only five days after the last. Maybe they wanted to give the guys two full weeks before the season opener.

I figured we would have another scrimmage a week from today?

On the periscope Chuck Pool implied that Fall camp ends on Monday (classes starting). If that is the case, I would think that the scrimmages are done.

Blog update
http://www.riceowls.com/blog/2016/08/tra...st-18.html

Quote:Head Coach David Bailiff:"There are some freshmen who are on the two-deep. They're not ready to start but there's some guys who can help us this year with depth... There are about five of them we are looking at..."

Hmm. Five true freshman? Not bad for a class that was pretty much lambasted in the recruiting service circles. My guess would be the following:

1. Joseph Dill OL - 6-4/350
2. Myles Adams DL - 6-2/290
3. DeAngelo Ellis CB - 5-11/160
4. Darsharm Newsome S - 5-11/180
5. Uzoma Akunebu LB 5-11/230

1-3 are gimmes as Bailiff has spoken aloud to the media about them. 4 and 5 are my guesses based on the first scrimmage. I think that we have a glut at WR and at Defensive End it would take an exceptional effort by Philips and Hubbard for them to crack the rotation. Collin Whitaker (CB 5-11/200) and Dylan Silcox (Safety 6-2/200) could easily be the other two as well.

Unrelated but true freshman Frank Frankovsky (walkon) will end up being very important to the team from an energy and effort standpoint. It was fun watching him during the first scrimmage.

On another note, the 2nd scrimmage notes indicate that Nashon Ellerbee scored twice on two runs. So perhaps he has been moved back to Running back.

The only WR I thought might play is Aaron Cephus, as somewhat of a Dennis Parks replacement. However, I've recently seen photos of him wearing a cast or wrap on his hand.

From the reports at Ricefootball.net, it would appear that Dill is impressing with more than just his size.

Not arguing because that would be great. But we seem to have a lot of depth at WR.

We are especially loaded with players like Myers. Ellerbe, Aston Walter, and a couple others fit the same role as he does.

Mayden is really the only guy who is a tall, fast "field-stretcher." Trevor Long is long, but not that fast.

Hence why I said Cephus not Myers.

How's Lance Wright looking? He was making noise in practice last year before he got hurt. If I remember right he's pretty tall and fast.

Lance is fast, but I'm not sure that he is take-the-top-off-of-coverage fast. We need a valid deep threat after Mayden. Looking forward to 2017, we will potentially sign Austin Trammell and George Nyakwol. Trammell while quick projects more to the slot position that Darrion Pollard plays. Nyakwol projects to Safety or Corner. More probably Safety. I only bring that up because signing a player like Nyakwol would give the team flexibility to move someone like Houston Robert to WR. Granted I don't know how good his hands are, but we won't be asking him to be a possession receiver. Here are some of his Hudl highlights.

Someone who can run, pass, catch, and return kicks?

Austin Walter? Astin Walter?

If we don't get a lot better in the secondary, it won't matter what we do at WR. Pass rush should help, but we need to read and react more quickly, and make plays when we do get in position to do so. It seems to me to be a historic weakness of Rice secondaries, going back to the Neely era (seriously), that we get in position to make plays but don't make the plays. It's annoyed the hell out of me for 50 years, and I've never understood why we don't.
