This year's freshman class has definitely contributed more than recent classes, but at this point it is not the best freshman class in the conference. Kent State's and Buffalo's freshmen have out-performed ours, and probably Ball State's have as well. Miami, Eastern Michigan, and Central Michigan only have one impact freshman a piece, but you could make an argument for taking any one of the three over our entire class. The conference has a lot of good freshmen this year.
It has been a good freshman class for the MAC but the one kid from Buffalo didn’t outperform much of anybody against us. I’d take Kent’s big post player, though. I suspect Ms. Lockett could be right up there if we played Buffalo’s style where one player gets 20 shots a game. The fact that four frosh are getting lots of minutes is encouraging. Plus our losses are replaceable.
I ran some numbers from the top scoring freshmen, using the MAC games only (to wash out OOC where players were still gaining their footing and had varying levels of competition.) There are 5 freshmen in the top 25 in scoring. Fair (UB), Davis (CMU), Blackford (KSU), Scott (MU) and Shumate (KSU). They all play significantly more minutes than Lockett, who is averaging 10.2 points in the MAC games. Davis plays 10 minutes per game more than Lockett, for example.
When you look at points per minute played, Lockett, Scott and Shumate are all essentially equal, and Davis and Blackford are only a touch better. Only Fair stands way ahead of the others, but as H2O has said she tosses up waaay more shots than anyone else, and is only shooting 33%.
The other interesting thing is that Lockett's points per game is 3.3 points higher in MAC play than OOC. Only Davis also saw that kind of rise. Fair is down 4 points per game. So, I think Lockett's scoring ability has been on par with most of those other players.
As for Wiard, she is 20th in assists per game, even with Santucci 3rd in the league and taking most of the PT at point. Also, she has a 2.3 A/T ratio, which should be 2nd in the MAC, but for some reason they don't list her in that category. She has enough assists to make the assist list, so I can only conclude she doesn't make the A/T list because she doesn't have enough turnovers yet.
