RE: WBB Recruiting
I've enjoyed watching the mens players' skill sets grow. There have been quite a few players who were fun to watch over four years. Last year alone. Knapke has been particularly fun. After that thread of him kind of dunking, he nearly pulled off a real monster two games ago, drove the lane but got fouled and he hit front rim. He elevated and everything.

In other Indiana playoff news, Cailey Bolser was back from her injury for their 1st round, but they lost so her season is over. She reportedly scored 20 in the loss.

It' an embedded tweet. They show up in browsers, but not too well in Tapatalk.

Anyway, this is Halle Idowu getting recognized for setting her school's career scoring record back in December.

This year's freshman class has definitely contributed more than recent classes, but at this point it is not the best freshman class in the conference. Kent State's and Buffalo's freshmen have out-performed ours, and probably Ball State's have as well. Miami, Eastern Michigan, and Central Michigan only have one impact freshman a piece, but you could make an argument for taking any one of the three over our entire class. The conference has a lot of good freshmen this year.

It has been a good freshman class for the MAC but the one kid from Buffalo didn’t outperform much of anybody against us. I’d take Kent’s big post player, though. I suspect Ms. Lockett could be right up there if we played Buffalo’s style where one player gets 20 shots a game. The fact that four frosh are getting lots of minutes is encouraging. Plus our losses are replaceable.

Beacham and the 6’4” newcomer. Do we have room for a grad transfer? Whittaker is limited but does a few things well.

I really like Lexi Lance. She is a tenacious rebounder. It's a small sample size (16 rebounds in 47 minutes), but she is by far the team leader in rebounds per minute played. I think Lance will get significant back-up minutes next year.

She’s been seeing sparse minutes but she definitely has a motor. Big body, too. A little short but so is Beacham and Lance has the muscle to push folks around.

The 6-4 newcomer has had two stress fractures in the last year and has a very uncertain future. Beacham was touted as the main player in the middle this season, but she's averaging 8 points and 4 rebounds per game. Hardly dominating. I see this as a huge problem area.

It’s been a problem this year as well.

I suspect Ms. Lockett could be right up there if we played Buffalo’s style where one player gets 20 shots a game. The fact that four frosh are getting lots of minutes is encouraging. Plus our losses are replaceable.

I ran some numbers from the top scoring freshmen, using the MAC games only (to wash out OOC where players were still gaining their footing and had varying levels of competition.) There are 5 freshmen in the top 25 in scoring. Fair (UB), Davis (CMU), Blackford (KSU), Scott (MU) and Shumate (KSU). They all play significantly more minutes than Lockett, who is averaging 10.2 points in the MAC games. Davis plays 10 minutes per game more than Lockett, for example.

When you look at points per minute played, Lockett, Scott and Shumate are all essentially equal, and Davis and Blackford are only a touch better. Only Fair stands way ahead of the others, but as H2O has said she tosses up waaay more shots than anyone else, and is only shooting 33%.

The other interesting thing is that Lockett's points per game is 3.3 points higher in MAC play than OOC. Only Davis also saw that kind of rise. Fair is down 4 points per game. So, I think Lockett's scoring ability has been on par with most of those other players.

As for Wiard, she is 20th in assists per game, even with Santucci 3rd in the league and taking most of the PT at point. Also, she has a 2.3 A/T ratio, which should be 2nd in the MAC, but for some reason they don't list her in that category. She has enough assists to make the assist list, so I can only conclude she doesn't make the A/T list because she doesn't have enough turnovers yet.

I like Lance too for all the reasons stated, but she has to get stronger with her hands as it seems the few times she has gotten the ball in the paint, she has had it knocked out of her hands. If she can do that, she can be a big contributor next year.

It was interesting though playing part of the 2nd half against BSU without a post player, and doing no better or worse than when either Beacham or Whitaker were in. If Bolser can give 10 productive minutes a game next year, that will be a huge boost.

Whittaker has the same hands issue. She struggles catching passes in traffic and getting the ball off glass. Still, she’s filled a need.
