Plays for a accomplish HS team. I think I saw they were runner up state champs her sophomore year? Not sure about last year. Averaged 26 points, 6 boards and 4 assists as a JR. Season high 45 points. Has a recruiting rating at ESPN of 90, and listed as 3.5 stars on prospect nation, although I don't know that those really mean anything for HS girls with the lack of consistent info that exists. Had an offer from EMU, and prospect nation indicated she had previously verballed to them, but don't know if that's true. Not sure if there were other offers.

Zaria Wright (a high school senior who, as northcoastRocket indicated, is coming to UT) is a candidate for the 2017 McDonald's All-America Game. I haven't been able to find anything about when the selections will be made. But here's a link to a story on the UT site about her nomination.

From my very limited understanding of the rules, I think she must be. Otherwise I don't think Coach Cullop would be able to comment about her and the story couldn't be posted on the UT site. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, she is one of three that signed during early signing period back on November 9th. The story is archived on the utrockets.com website in the WBB section.

Signed
Mariah Copeland (Notre Dame Academy), pre-med. 6'2"
Tatyana tater-tot Davis (Morgan, Ga.), 5'7 (seen 5'9") pg Won a State Champ.
Zaria Wright (Concord, N.C.), 5'8" g Originally from AA, Mich, had interests from EMU. All-state 3X as a Junior, led her region in scoring.

Lots of height with handles. Still need a 6'8" Latvian or something.

I think Copeland is about 5-4.

RE: WBB Recruiting
When I saw the news on twitter about the Wright's nomination, I thought wow, that's huge - then I found the list of nominees. Not sure how many there are in total, but it's 7 pages long in teeny tiny font - a few hundred at least. One site said there are 123 nominees from the state of Texas alone. So, while still great news that she is up for that, my hopes were dashed just a bit by the sheer number of nominees. It makes me wonder why UT hasn't had nominees in the past - have they?

Here's the list if anyone cares:

https://usathss.files.wordpress.com/2017...t_1-10.pdf

A side note. I remember when Coach brought in 2 recruits from Minnesota and a few people on here mentioned that Minnesota is not a hot bed of basketball, so there's no reason to be recruiting there. So it's true that Minnesota doesn't have very many nominees at 6, but that's exactly the same number of nominees from Ohio. Just food for thought.

Also, re-watched some of her highlights on hudl. She is definitely a scorer. Can hit a jumper from anywhere, and over anyone it seems. That kind of player UT hasn't seen in a very long time.

Of course, after graduating 2 bigs and bringing in 3 guards, I'm wondering how many 5-guard sets we will see UT run next season.

I think Copeland is about 5-4.

I must have read the wrong bio.

Rockets get 1st? verbal for class of '19 5'9" PG/SG Sophia Wiard of Muskegon, MI Oakridge. Honorable Mention all-state as a sophomore. Free Press rated her 1 of the top 100 players in MI.

Coach seems excited: https://twitter.com/Sophiawiard_2/status...72/video/1

http://www.hudl.com/profile/6985322/sophia-wiard

Seems like a natural scorer. Can hit the 3 and drive and score.

Interesting. Lance was mentioned earlier in the thread, but I apparently missed about Fortner. Rockets also reportedly have verbals for 18 from post Ariel Cummings and pg Teneea Heston.

That's too many, as the Rockets have 3 seniors graduating next year, and with the recent transfer Carlsten-Handberg, have a full 15 player roster. So, only 3 spots available in '18, assuming no one leaves early.

That's the first I've heard about Teneea Heston. Where did you see that?

There were tweets about that last fall, although I can only seem to find 1 now, and it isn't from a direct source, so maybe that was misreported, or she changed her mind.

Coach has retweeted a new verbal commit today without a specific name. Some googling investigative work indicates the commit seems to be 2019 guard Soleil Barnes. 5'8" guard from Nordonia HS.

Thanks for the post. From the highlights, she looks like quite a scorer. She shoots the three off the dribble and also quickly off the pass.

RE: WBB Recruiting
Unlike Football & MBB, I rarely see tweets about WBB players getting offers from UT, but I saw this one yesterday. UT has offered 2022 (yes that's right, 2022) 6'2 stretch 3 Grace VanSlooten from Ottawa Hills. Highlights here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgOM0UqEZHI

Wow. What's the chance UT can convince her to stay at home.
