RE: New CAA TV deal in the works
FWIW...I purchased my second ROKU last Feb. It is a smart TV on steroids basically. It is a major convenience issue and streaming should be better than when I had to hook the laptop up because we weren't on CSN.

side note....I think "streaming"contracts are the wave of the future and will knock your cable/dish companies the way streaming music is doing to CD's. Not opining on whether that's good or bad. The CAA with it's limited viewership is a perfect match at this point for the format. I'd like to see ESPN3 or CSN, but glad to have the ROKU option.

Stretch doesn't stream live in 4k. I think going forward, as indicated on the roku, some on demand stuff will be 4k.

That will be really nice once they get it going. Just using the up-convert feature of my receiver makes a huge difference. (it converts anything 1080p > 4K) Airplay, WatchESPN, and NFL app streams all look amazing with it. Will only get better once the native 4K streams start up.

Getting OT, but what receiver do you have?

4K? Half the time Stretch can't handle the current viewer load. Moving to 4K requires a *LOT* more network bandwidth/capacity, which is why companies like Netflix were slow in rolling it out.

I agree, but I was just pointing out the graphic that they posted on the jmu site. Also, let's not compare our bandwidth needs to something like Netflix.

I open up JMU games on my iPad and use an app to mirror it to my Roku. Works with no issues and streams perfect. No cords and no laptop.

RE: New CAA TV deal in the works
Browsing the WatchESPN app tonight, I saw the following "channels"

SEC
Longhorn
ACC
America East
Big South
Big West
Horizom League
MAAC
MAC
MVFC
NEC
OVC
SoCon
Southland
SunBelt

Seems like most Division I football conferences *except* the CAA, ugh.

Sam Houston vs JMU will be featured on ESPN2 and the Southland channels.

While on a plane last Saturday and walking through the airport it was super easy to pull up WatchESPN on my phone and watch the game. We need to follow suit like basically every other conference and make a deal with ESPN to have at least most, if not every, game on ESPN3.

The MVFC has a deal with ESPN3 where every single conference game and every conference member home OOC game is available streaming on ESPN3. The only thing not covered is OOC road games or FBS games that may not have an ESPN3 deal (most do fortunately).

We need to follow suit and get a similar deal for the CAA.

RE: New CAA TV deal in the works
I believe that is in the works. I believe starting next fall we will see a significant increase in ESPN-3 CAA FB and MBB games (and some WBB and baseball and perhaps softball).

The schools have got to have the productions capabilities (which JMU does I believe) to meet ESPN's standards as well as the commitment to provide announcers, etc.

ditto. I like saving the games and watching them in the offseason, or even later in the season. I believe ESPN3 only archives for 30 days. selfishly, I want to be able to record them on my DVR. it's also easier to rewind and fast forward with my remote, and also watch in slo-mo (yes, I do that a lot. can really see plays develop that way).

now, if ESPN3 simulcast them on TV as they are doing with the playoffs, I'd be all over it. but I'm pretty sure they're only doing that for the playoffs.

RE: New CAA TV deal in the works
I don't mind CSN, but the problems there are:

1) often plays second fiddle to the ACC and gets bumped to CSN+ or something like that
2) no guarantee of all games being streamed live...only a select few will be televised, while ESPN-3 would be all of them leading more availability across the nation
3) ESPN-3/WatchESPN offers a platform for multiple JMU and CAA sports including baseball and softball in the spring, etc...CSN won't commit to any of that

As long as we are in the CAA, I think it is prudent for the future of the conference and its members to develop and strengthen a partnership with ESPN. The deal with NBC/Comcast a few years ago fell far short of expectations. 5 years from now - preferably sooner - we should be able to pull up 60% of JMU's baseball and softball games, all CAA FB games, all CAA MBB games, and at least half of the CAA WBB games with live streaming via ESPN-3/WatchESPN. Schools have to commit to the production of the games. IOW, better than MadiZone, though we aren't necessarily far behind the standards that would be expected I think.

RE: New CAA TV deal in the works
I don't think Madizone is lacking as far as production value. Curt's team does a solid job with everything I've seen...camera work, color consistency, graphics, and even commentating is much better than even some of the semi-pro commentators we get on the minor-channel productions. Where Madizone falls down isn't even their fault, it's on the broadcast technology. WatchESPN works on every device, scales quality based on connection (which is huge), and I don't think I've ever had a dropped connection. The only issue with it is that everyone would need an ESPN subscription, so hopefully they would still be able to keep the normal Madizone production as a backup.

RE: New CAA TV deal in the works
Agree, jmufan2008. I wasn't intending on putting MadiZone down, btw. In fact, I am thrilled MadiZone exists. Even with the buffering and dropped signals, etc. You nailed it as far as the production improvements to meet standards goes. That is, assuring the bandwidth, connectivity, etc., is up to speed (pun intended).

ESPN may want complete ownership and control of all content depending on how it is agreed to in a contract. The CAA has little-to-no leverage and will likely agree to close to anything ESPN wants (and that is understandable). Backup offerings like MadiZone for Tier 3 content at ACC programs have gone by the wayside due to the recent contractual agreements with ESPN, who now owns everything for example. So, content for baseball games in the spring will now either be on the ACC Sports Network Extra or nothing at all. In the past Virginia baseball games, for instance, not picked up by ESPN-3 would be streamed via PPV at CBSi (CBS Interactive) All-Access package. Not anymore starting with this school year as ESPN has put the clamp down on that backup plan. So, we'll see how it goes. Perhaps ESPN doesn't care enough about something like MadiZone's existence. As frustrating as the lack of continuous stream can be sometimes with MadiZone, I still am very glad it exists.

RE: New CAA TV deal in the works
What would happen if such an ESPN3 deal occurred, you would essentially just start seeing our Madizone produced broadcasts via ESPN3. It would still look the same and still have Curt on commentary. The major difference would be the increase of accessibility nationally and via mobile devices, in addition to the increase in stability. No more buffering due to the server they're using being crap and not being able to handle 2,000 viewers at once.

For home broadcasts, you are correct. There are additional opportunities as well...

1. Road game broadcasts being more frequent and reliable (don't have to search Buddha's green earth looking for whether one of our CAA schools has it streaming and if so whether it is PPV or free, etc.).

2. Expansion as stated earlier into spring sports.

3. Conference tournaments now available via live streaming more frequently and reliably. IOW, the CAA office has to pony up and create opportunities for CAA-sponsored/driven events to be streamed live just like the individual schools on campuses.

The norm is getting closer and closer (if not already there) that parents of student-athletes expect to be able to view live their sons and daughters participating in games at minimum via live streaming. The technology and platforms are already there. It becomes a bit of a recruiting obstacle if/when the CAA and its member institutions lack in these areas. By no means, a deal breaker in all cases or even a majority of the time, but it will get harder and harder in the future to impress upon a particular S-A that less than half of our MBB games, for instance, are on TV or streamed live via a major platform such as ESPN-3/WatchESPN.

CBS Sports Network will carry the CAA championship game this year. 3/6 at 7pm. Looks like this is just a one off deal. Nothing about next year.
