I've been looking at the records for each date in Booneville, and the summer of 1980 was as brutal as I remember it. Amazing.

I hate to say this, but it's the truth. Last year with Shields finally gone, and knowing nothing about Chris Beard, at least he was not Shields and I was excited. To tell you the truth, I'm not one bit excited about this season or this coach. Didn't care for the fact we didn't even look for the best coach we could find, we just handed the keys over to the next guy. Coach Beard excited me with his talk. This new coach doesn't excite me, and most likely he sure won't be a Chris Beard. I don't expect him to win 30, just want him to create some excitement. I haven't seen that from him. Anxious to see the crowds this winter, and especially after Christmas. I predict there won't be any sellouts.

RE: Like a tomb
Let's try and be positive. We're coming off arguably the greatest season in our program's history. Every coach is different. Wes can't be Chris. Wes can only be Wes. He's been given an opportunity, and hopefully he'll make the best of it. From what I see, he and the staff are working hard in recruiting. They're putting offers out there. November will tell us how effective our recruiting is by what happens in the early signing. If the team proves out to be good, I think we'll draw on last year's impetus to have good crowds. Obviously it's all speculative now. We should have a very good season.

I believe Chasse will give Wes every chance to prove himself, but I don't believe he'll allow a coach to stay forever if he's not winning and drawing crowds. Another post season appearance would really elevate our program's stature in the community. We changed our brand to "Little Rock" and immediately coordinated that change with a great season.
Don't give up on us. Whether Wes was the right choice or not is yet to be determined. I'm hoping he has great success. If not, after a reasonable time, there will be a change made. We learned very early that Chasse will do everything possible to move the program forward. Hope you're having a nice Summer. Stay cool.

RE: Like a tomb
Even though it's unfair, he'll be compared to Chris, and there is hardly any way he can live up to what Chris accomplished in his season here. I hope our fans will give Wes the support he'll need to keep our program moving forward and not be disappointed if he doesn't accomplish what Chris did right off the bat. After being around Wes in the time he's been here, I've become convinced he's a fine young man, and will do everything he possibly can to keep our program at a high level. As with any new head coach, the jury is still out until he has time to prove himself. Looking back, none of us knew anything about Chris when he was hired. And wow was that a great hire. Let's hope Chasse has the same kind of luck with Wes. It will be great for the community if a local man has success at our school.
Plus, he has made some seemingly really good hires with his assistants. I feel confident we'll be fine this season. After that, who knows. I'm not going to look that far ahead. Just enjoy each success we have when we have it.
