nope --- this is the type of schedule with regional opponents, former CAA teams that we as fans have been asking for for 4-5 years.

RE: MBB Schedule 2016/17
I saw that someone posted the Sagarin ratings at the beginning of this thread. Here are the final 2016 Kenpom rankings for the teams on the schedule, including JMU. Gives one a feel of the strength of the schedule besides just what comes to mind from the name of the school and conference. These can also change quite a bit from year to year.

87 - JMU
94 - ODU
103 - Richmond
109 - LA Lafayette
173 - TX Southern
183 - Western MI
187 - Charlotte
198 - Mason
254 - App State
258 - Montana State
266 - Rice
290 - Longwood
331 - UMBC

It's not a schedule that's going to get a school NCAA at large consideration, nor probably NIT consideration. Regular season CAA winner that doesn't advance to NCAAs automatically gets NIT, though.

Looks like a middle of the road schedule that provides some challenges, some decent teams and some cupcakes. I would call it a balanced schedule for a mid-major team.

I like to play two or three games against P5 schools if possible, as it provides a measuring stick and a chance to make a splash at times. This would have been a year to do that, given JMU should be solid with the number of returning players it has.

Last year's JMU team was actually pretty solid at no. 87 nationally.

RE: MBB Schedule 2016/17
The idea of the schedule IMO is to increase fan support and test yourself against good competition so that you are ready for the conference season. It's also to position yourself should you do well in terms of rankings for post season berths and seeding.

This type of attitude that we are in a one bid league etc. is a loser's mentality and why I came out as strong as I did against Deane because that runs counter to what Coach Rowe said and what I think fans want from JMU and have responded so well to in other sports (example Women's softball). Challenge and play the best- you say we were killed against Ohio State or UVA or WVU- I say with lesser talent we played with Ohio State at times, and played with WVU on a neutral court. Last year CAA teams played and beat P5 teams on the road and neutral courts. W&M beat NC State and had Dayton beat at Dayton before giving away the game late. Hofstra beat FSU, Charleston beat Miami. With this years schedule we are relying on the fact that the teams on the schedule (who scored poorly last year and historically) will be improved and do well in the OOC rather than playing teams from bigger conferences who will go into the season with higher rankings.

If every CAA team adopted this type of OOC scheduling philosophy maybe the league would receive stronger consideration for multiple bids. Regardless of that and the league JMU affiliates with it's what the program should strive for. I know that there are things to balance- travel, home vs. away, what's available to them etc. but it would have been nice to see that tone set in year 1 is what I'm saying.

RE: MBB Schedule 2016/17
There were more P5 wins last year than any I can remember in my 30+ years of watching CAA basketball. The CAA also finished with a #8 or #9 RPI. Did the conference receive an at large? An at large is starting to feel like a pipe dream for the CAA. So why schedule P5 schools?

JMU needs a schedule that will sell tickets and bring alums out. This schedule does that.

I disagree- so Monmouth from a worse conference than JMU didn't get an at large last year- there have been plenty of mid majors that have in large part due to top 50 and top 100 wins in the non conference schedule.

Despite not getting an at large Monmouth's program benefited from a ton of added exposure and an NIT top seed. This is momentum to build on for recruiting and in future years. That's just what JMU MBB needs- an opportunity for momentum. As Robert Deniro said in Cop Land- you had your chance and you blew it. The good news is that maybe next year they will do a better job.

We are talking about road games, not about selling tickets. Either Longwood or Montana State road games should have been traded for a marquee road game. I believe Western Michigan is a return game owed from last year.

Why schedule P5 teams? I'm surprised you even asked the question. So many reasons already discussed including its a primary desire of the student-athletes. They want to play the best competition they can play. 13 OOC games gives you a lot of flexibility to schedule.

Basketball is a much more likely sport for JMU to compete at the highest level than football right now because of FCS limitations. P5 teams have proven they will readily offer guarantee games.

I agree playing ODU, Richmond, and George Mason is great. That is how it should be every year. Playing at least SOME P5 programs should also happen every year.
There are too many OOC games to not get it done.
Just in the last 4 years JMU has played UVA 2x, West Va., Ohio State, and UCLA.

Are we saying JMU should not play those teams? They should not aspire to elevate the program to national status? They should be afraid to compete?

Building a new convo requires better scheduling and perhaps a marquee win would raise some eyebrows and build momentum. You can't beat 'em if you don't play 'em.

Dukie/JMUNation is getting old and soft.

I think Longwood is a return game from a year or two ago. The Montana State road game is the head scatcher. Why travel so far to play an avg to bad non P5 school? This game should have been our payday game against a prominent P5 program. We get paid and it is fun to watch as a fan. Not sure what upside there is playing the Bobcats unless we get a return game from their football team.

Maybe Montana St called Lou's bluff.
"Come on Lou, you said you would play anyone, anywhere, you aren't full of sh*t are you?"

Yep looks to be UNCW or JMU? but I bet UNCW. I'll take top 75 without being too greedy- that shows some respect for the program.

this poll is very interesting.....I think we may be a bit over rated as we did lose our best player and guards are a bit unproven. Senior leadership taken into account I guess. I think Jmu william and Mary are 2 and 3 behind uncw.

Cant wait to see where they rank us.

NY- wasn't sure if you meant in your rankings or theirs- W&M looks to be #4 with COC #3 (even without Barry?). Curry was such a great Duke and will be missed but I think Dalembert should rebound and have a very good Senior year- Serb and Vodo should still be effective in the front court and it will be interesting to see if Shaq takes a step forward in terms of his energy, all around play, and focus under the new coaches. He has the tools.

Also McLean should take another step forward as a Junior and Snowden should be a contributor. That's without the 2 new Sophomores who look to be rotation guys. That's a good top 8. Word is in the off season that Lukic of all people became a vocal leader for the team but I wouldn't expect much more from him on the court. There's also Satkius and Kent who while frustrating can be effective in small doses and I don't think this team will need to rely on them for more than that.

Hart:

We are not elevating our program to national status by having 15-30 point loses to P5 schools. I think Lou can elevate our talent and when he does, that will be the time to challenge ourselves with a tougher schedule.

While we have a lot of Seniors, we don't have really good Seniors. We need those to beat P5 schools.

I am definitely getting old but not soft...just smarter.
