RE: New Tribe Logo
We were always told that the old Cary Field seated 12,400, raised to 15,000 in the late 1970's, but I can find no solid source to confirm that. As Sitting Bull stated, many were often empty... whatever the total number.
Here are some interesting tidbits about Zable/Cary, one of the oldest football stadiums, still in use, in the country.
Zable Stadium was financed by a grant for construction through the Public Works Administration during President Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration (1935). Improvements in the past decade have boosted Zable Stadium's capacity to 12,400. However, in the 1985 Homecoming victory against Richmond, a record crowd of 18,054 packed the stadium and grounds.
Largest Crowds
Estimated 19,000 vs. UNC on Nov. 5, 1949 (BTW, Walt Zable played in this game, as well as the very first game at Cary, vs. UVA); 18,054 vs. Richmond on Nov. 16, 1985 (I was in the Press Box for this one. It was amazing to see that much humanity in the stadium)
A fire in 1948 on the left side of the stadium burned for two hours and cracked the concrete under the stand. However, the damage to the stadium was not too serious.
While William & Mary petitioned the Public Works Administration, in the 1930's, for funding to construct a number of buildings on campus, tax-payer dollars could not be used for the construction of athletic facilities. Rumors/Legend still persist to this day that in order to secure funding, William & Mary masqueraded the construction of the football stadium as an agricultural exposition or amphitheater, thus the opening on the visitor's side, under the old pressbox.
Whatever the story, we need to get to a stage where it is full and loud on a regular basis.
