But never ODU. I mean, the last thing I saw was a pink hoodie that said Monarchs that was the same style as VT, VCU, UVA, and Mason ones. And that was YEARS ago. I wish ODU was represented more. Is that the licensing department not spreading its roots? Or is it that stores don't want to carry our gear? I know the Hampton Roads area is pretty out of sight/out of mind for the DC/NoVA area but it's really frustrating to never see anything ODU. Hell, I didn't hear about ODU until my Junior year of high school, and that is only because I went to a George Mason game in Fairfax where they played us. I know I've seen ads for their distance learning program but ODU should be trying to extend its brand outside of the 757

Stores are going to stock what they sell. ODU doesn't have the huge alumni presence in NoVa to make it worth taking up precious shelf space with our gear. We also don't have bandwagon fans outside of the 757. To get those, it will just take time or a big run in bball or football.

On the other side of the coin, I don't see any VCU or Mason stuff at stores in Hampton Roads. Why? Because it won't sell here.

I completely understand. Back in the day I saw a decent amount of ODU gear -not as much as other schools, but every now and again I would see something pop up - that could be because we were a little mroe prominent in college basketball. If we have a good run in the tournament (Final 4) and capitalize on that success like VCU did, I'm sure the amount of ODU stuff, especially in the state of VA, would go up. I don't think a good season of football or even several successful season and some bowls will do anything, as the G5 gets drowned out, unless CUSA's profile gets much better in the future

When I say a big run in football, I mean a Boise State type run. It most likely won't ever happen due to the rules all being changed to edge the G5 out. But if we sniffed that level of success, our popularity across the state would explode.

I used to see some ODU stuff up on NOVA. When they had the Steve and Barrys at Potomac Mills, ODU was very well represented. I know the Tervis store at National Harbor carried some ODU cups as of 6 months ago.

I actually do a double take when I see someone with ODU gear on (I wear mine regularly). just the other day I saw one of those ODU FB Undefeated ***** on someone in DC and it blew my mind. its certainly very rare....I don't complain about it though. like someone else said - if people bought it, stores would sell it. its just not the case. meanwhile they sell UVA and VT stuff at 7-11's up here. just the way it is.

I do too. It makes me smile haha. I just moved from the field to the office at my job about a month ago and one of my coworkers in my department went to ODU and got a CET degree like me, only 5 years before me. It's nice to have someone with a similar background. Another coworker went to VCU and we all exchanged healthy words back and forth at a meeting haha (finally, someone who understands!)

This made me laugh while reading this haha. I still have my Undefeated shirt, and wear it from time to time.

I'm sure it also has to do with the merch manager at the store. Their familiarity or having a tie to a particular University that may impact what and how much they carry also.

We'll know we've really arrived when unaffiliated fans from around the state want to buy our gear.

I saw someone wearing a Virginia tech shirt once and I told him good game after they beat Ohio state a few years ago. He had no clue what I was talking about. He just liked the shirt because it said Virginia tech

I think Basketball is the key there.
It's easier to get on the national stage in BB than with FB.
My wife knows who Butler, Xavier, Gonzaga and others are but has no clue who So. Miss, App State, or even Marshall is.

Or 7-11, ariports, and random convenience stores and gas stations around the state. Or hell, when the Washington Nationals sell college colors hats, I would love to see our name on that list (University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Georgetown University, George Washington University, George Mason University, University of Maryland, American University and U.S. Naval Academy, and soon to be JMU):

Do the hats actually say the university name on them? If not, the Georgetown hat works for ODU, ECU could be JMU, W&M is GMU etc.

I don't believe so. But it's for marketing, putting our name out there. I understand they were trying to do the "local" schools, which make sense until VT and UVA which only are there because of the large amount of followers and alumni in the Norther VA/DC/MD area. I know Norfolk is far from local in DC, and which Harrisonburg is closer that DC is. But the point of the post was that I wish we had a big enough following/demand for us to be included in something like that. I guarantee the schools are getting some money from those hats, even though they don't physically have their names on it, because the Nationals are using their names and colors to sell them (I know you can't copyright colors but still).

And even though Georgetown uses Navy and Silver, I'm sure if they really did and ODU had there would (hopefully) be hints of light blue in there

EDIT: Actually, I looked up the GTown hat, and it does look exactly like the OD baseball hat that I own:

http://www.bkstr.com/ProductDisplay?urlR...reId=14928

But my point still stands

A good basketball run can go a long way there. BUT beat a known ACC team in FB and we'll start turning heads. Do it a couple of times and you get the attention of people who have never heard of you before.

RE: ODU Merchandise
My wife dragged me into a Vera Bradley store at Lynnhaven Mall over the weekend. This is supposed to be a pretty upscale store for women. Anyhow, I see a blanket with a UVA insignia and ask the sales person "where is the ODU gear?" She then hands me one of those sample packet you see for paint or tile etc, you know the kind that's held together by a chain and has many sample to look at. So I go thru it and see UVA, VT and VCU!! but no ODU!!! tons of Big ten , Big 12, SEC you name it, so it's not just local schools. This looks like a classic example of what others are talking about relative to missing tons of marketing opportunities. Why does it seem we're always a step behind everyone else?

We are way behind when it comes to marketing the University. Even the Universities slogan of "Idea Fusion" is pitiful. ODU needs to develop a marketing strategy that includes promoting the wonderful things the University continues to accomplish and start to build pride in our University. I have traveled all over Va. in the last month. I have seen VT, UVA, JMU, VCU, CNU, RU, and GMU window stickers in that order pretty much everywhere i went. I only saw 1 window ODU sticker north of Williamsburg. Also, in this area...VT, UVA, CNU, and RU dominate. We have no school pride and no marketing strategy to promote school pride.
