I was a bit detached from JMU during the Lefty years, that's when I was working for a NASCAR team and every moment of every day was accounted for. I think I only went to one JMU MBB game while he coached and that was a game down here in Charlotte against UNCC.

Point is valid. We have not had a lot of chances against big-time programs so the sample size is small, but we have not played well in these games over the years.

I know we beat WV and Penn St in the same season when I was there is the early 2ks (Sheman Dillard years), but even though they were P5s wins, they probably were not what you meant by "major upsets". We also played a decent game at UVA (a year or two later) where we lost by 8 or 9, but I thought we held our own.

We almost won at Stanford sometime in the past decade (gave up a scoring run in final 5 minutes after leading most of the way before Julius Wells had a fun final minute).

We did have an 8 game OOC winning streak last year where we beat ECU, GMU, and Marshall 2x that felt pretty major based on how the rest of the season went.

We beat Glen Robinson and Purdue in 95 or 96. Purdue was ranked at the time, but that was the last ranked team I remember us beating.

I believe that was December 1994, the same day we lost to Marshall in OT in the second rounds of the I-AA playoffs.

RE: Future WBB Schedule
Purdue was unranked when we beat them in 1994. They did wind up ranked 12th though at the end of the season.
http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/scho...edule.html

My recollections were that we have come close a lot, but never actually defeated a Top 20 team. So I channeled my inner BDK and found this website: http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/scho...s-madison/

Brace yourselves....In our entire men's DI basketball history, we have only 1 win against a ranked team- 1992-93 season against 19th ranked Cal. Pretty sure that was a neutral site game.

Close calls:
#3 UVA, lost by 1, 1980-81 season at Godwin Hall
#1 UNC, lost by 2, 1981-82, NCAA Tourney 2nd round
#9 Iowa, lost by 1, 1982-83 season- neutral site
#7 UNC, lost by 1, 1989-90-Maui Invitational
#13 Oklahoma, lost by 3, 1990-91 season- Capital Center
#16 Minnesota, lost by 5, 1993-94 season- road game
# 14 Florida, lost by 2, 1993-94, NCAA Tourney 2nd round

We were solid "back in the day". Beat some name teams and had some Tournament success against good teams. But none of those three teams we beat in the early 80s NCAAs was a Top 20 team when we played them. In 40 years of DI hoops, you'd think we'd have more than one win. We are what we are.

Yes, indeed. JMU MBB is what it is, and despite some modest NCAAT success in the 80s under Lou, JMU MBB hasn't accomplished very much in 40 years of play.

I would have thought at least one of the three NCAAT wins under Lou would have been against a ranked opponent, Georgetown, Ohio State, or West Virginia. I guess not.

Remember though that the AP only ranked a top 20 back in those days - not sure when they went to a top 25. Based on seedings, I would guess that those three would have been ranked somewhere around 24-30 at the time.

I had thought so too. I'm comforting myself with the notion that all three were probably just outside what was only a Top 20 back then (in the also receiving votes category). Georgetown was very good-a year away from Ewing and their championship game appearance, Ohio State had Clark Kellogg and WVU had four 1000 point scorers on that team.

Any new noise on the WBB OOC schedule at this time?

Also, Glenn Robinson graduated the year before, but they did have Cuonzo Martin on that team. It was my first JMU game as a Freshman and it has been pretty much downhill ever since.

Just thought I'd throw these in here regarding a Lady Dukes recruiting target, who we know has been to the Convo multiple times...

A long shot for the LD's, but hey, you never know.

She would be a huge signing. Biggest in program history.

I honestly believe we have as good of a shot as any other university.

JMU target, Sam Brunelle, and the Team USA U16's won the Americas gold medal in Argentina. Won every game in blowout fashion. Sam has been writing a blog for USA Today.

Here's her last entry... http://usatodayhss.com/?p=101232291

She advises at the end that her initial recruiting list may be public by August or September. She's a rising junior so she has plenty of time. Will be interesting to see if JMU will make the first cut. Geno A. at UConn visited her HS (William Monroe) before she had even stepped on the court for a HS game so they've been recruiting her pretty good since middle school. UVA has rarely missed one of her games. But, being ESPN.com's #1 rated player in the Class of '19 means we know the competition will be there all the way to the top programs.

should we spend valuable recruiting time and resources on the #1 ranked player in the country?

she ain't coming to JMU.

she is very local to JMU... so what's the recruiting message? "come here and be THE person to take us from very good to serious contender"?

It may be a stretch for us to ever get her but at least she and her Mom have been at games each of the past 2 seasons.
