Dish Network drops NFL Network (and Redzone Channel)
Forbes

Uninformed speculation:

Is the Bundle in more trouble than we thought? This is a bundler dropping the NFL Network over money.

Is this a downside of the NFL letting CBS/NBC co-broadcast the Thursday Night Football package? REduces the need to have NFL network.

OR is this a reflection of differences between the Dish and DirecTV subscriber bases? DirecTV has Sunday Ticket, so if you're NFL-motivated, wouldn't you already have DirecTV instead of Dish?

I think it is this. The NFL sold their network at such a high coast, and damn near forced cablers to carry on basic or expanded basic, because they carried 8 football games per year. Now, they really only have 3 or 4 exclusive, and their won rules make it so that if it is a local team, it will be on OTA TV anyway. I've been waiting for this to happen somewhere, ever since they started having CBS simulcast the games.

Well, that too. I think it is a calculated gamble by Dish to remove high priced spots channels, because in the end, they can never compete with DirecTV on that front anyway, so why try?

the real story is that there isn't a market for a 24/7 NFL channel. People love their football, but they also want to decompress from it after the football season is done.

I LOVE football and I never got into the NFL Network.

Honestly though, I wouldn't pay extra for NFLN. I like it that I have it on my current sports tier but don't really watch it till its Sunday highlights from current games or TNF. Otherwise its much ado about nothing like the NBAN, NHLN, and MLBN.

Redzone is a different animal though. I cannot even watch NFL on Sunday's without Redzone now.

?????
That's the whole point. NFLN could broadcast a test pattern for 300+ days a year--as long as they have the Thursday Night package, a lot of people will need/want NFLN. (With the CBS/NBC deal, do they still "have" the TNF package, though.)

per NFL.com, there are 8 games exclusive to the NFL network

Thursday Sept 29th - Dolphins at Bengals

Sunday Oct 23rd - Giants at Rams (England game 9:30AM)

Thursday Oct 27th - Jags at Titans

Thursday Nov 3rd - Falcons at Bucs

Thursday Nov 10th - Browns at Ravens

Saturday Dec 17th - Dolphins at Jets

Saturday Dec 24th - Bengals at Texans

Sunday Dec 25th - Ravens at Steelers

When taking into consideration games will be broadcast in their primary territory OTA, how big of a hit will DISH be taking but not showing these 8 games?

Hard to say but TNF games usually still get better ratings than the collegiate games on the same night.

The NFL would be better off to disband the NFL Network and bid out those remaining eight games - Fox would be the most logical designation since CBS has the other half of the TNF package, but this could be a chance for the four-letter network to reverse their fortunes, or for Turner to get back in the game.

The Combine would be an excellent fit for any of the big four's sports networks as it makes for live daytime programming. The Draft is already on the four-letter network anyway. BYU, SEC, B1G, and Pac 12 schools can broadcast pro days on their own networks; Notre Dame can use NBCSN.

The other alternative is to start getting in to broadcasting college football - pretty much the bulk of the rights are tied up for years, but it could sublicense games in the interim. This could conceivably yield as many as 52 games per year - and it would be shown to more homes than games on BeIN sports. If WAC football can somehow emerge from the ashes, the NFL Network could even be their primary TV partner. Pick up some games from the G5 and even FCS, and the NFL Network could build a full day's schedule of games with interests across the nation.

And if the NFL ever started a developmental league, we obviously know who the TV partner will be.

The NFL Network makes roughly $1 billion in subsriber fee revenue from the NFL network, roughly $250 million in advertising, AND does not have to share it with the players, since it is technically not a part of their TV revenue. It also gives them leverage for the future.

They make another billion plus on sunday ticket. They don't get ad revenue from it though, as they are Fox and CBS sold commercials

I'll admit that I generally watch the NFL Network practically year-round. I don't watch the talking heads, though; I'll watch some of their A Football Life shows if it's someone that's particularly interesting to me, regardless of rooting interest.
