An update on Coastal's Stadium Expansion
Hopefully, we can all just agree in this thread that it needs to happen...
Legislators in both the SC House and Congress got veto override votes (the decision to veto or override the CHE's denial) put in the agendas. It had already passed the House. Today the State Senate vetoed it as well.
There are others who can speak to it better, but thought y'all would like to know we are one step closer. It doesn't mean we are home free... But we got past the political agendas of the CHE and their making Guinea Pigs out of our case. Now we can move on to finance committees, which we should be able to convince based on our track record.
Not to dredge up the previous argument... But for those of you legitimately questioning the finance piece... You're right, the state should be wary and asking those questions. The problem is that's never been the CHE's duty before. There are committees we now face for that, and they will very likely side with us. I think what got lost in the previous thread was that the CHE has been a rubber stamp info collection agency that suddenly wants a bigger budget, and has members whose interest preclude approving the project for Coastal. It was all political. If there are legit finance questions to ask, and some of you pointed out legit ones, the next step will ask those, and we have answers they should like.
It's a good day.

It's a good day.
Technically the project was placed into the state budget to help bypass the CHE. We received nominal funding of $100k but that was justified by the one who wrote the proviso to help offset the additional costs Coastal has incurred due to getting the runaround from the CHE. It was approved by the state house and senate as part of the budget but the governor vetoed it. The vetoe was overridden in the house and senate last night.
This is why we were telling people that it is political. The governor wants a board of regents like Georgia. Currently each school has their own board. So she was having her appointees on the CHE flex muscle to try to force the issue although Coastal has done everything properly under the current system. This did force some good dialogue on the future of the CHE and the purpose of the CHE so I'd expect to see some changes next year.
The main argument made by those arguing to override the vetoe is that 1) the CHE did not appear to be evaluating projects fairly or impartially and 2) the CHE was not providing any real guidance as to what they expected. Pretty much echoing what many of us have been saying.
So as MOTIAW said, not a done deal but a step forward. The next two steps have legislatures on those boards so i think we'll be a little better off. The governor is also on one of those so we'll see. The governor doesn't appear to have a lot of support, especially after targeting some powerful senators in her party by backing opposition candidates in the recent primary. Two of the three she opposed won, one being the senator that represent Coastal's area and the other in a close county who is the senate president and head of the finance committee - said to be the most powerful senator.

RE: An update on Coastal's Stadium Expansion
Has Coastal approached Visit Myrtle Beach for naming rights? That bunch tosses cash around like it was play money. Seems like a natural to me. I understand the association with the Brooks family, but some sort of co-naming could be worked out, if not just for the field.

The stadium and field are already named. The "complex" is already named. There will be other naming rights I'm sure - but the most direct route would be sponsorship.

Coastal Passes the CHE!!
The other thread was locked...
http://www.myrtlebeachonline.com/sports/...16977.html
Rundown: Coastal lobbied our local senators and got two provisos voted on. The first made the stadium not under the jurisdiction of the CHE, the second prevented the stadium from being voted on by the state Supreme Court.
Our wonderful governor VETOED both of these provisos. Even after we cut the budget by $10 million and sent her a petition that many of you helped sign. At very worst I assumed she would just remain neutral on the issue. She exceeded my worst expectations and vetoed this, while publicly shaming us saying it is disappointing that a public institution would lobby like this (oh the irony). Both houses of the general assembly overturned her vetoes with more than a 2/3 majority, which just goes to show how much the state is sick of her trying to grab power.
Bottom line: We are through the CHE hold up. Now we go to two more steps before putting it out to bid. But it's happening.

They are on record for wanting a bowl.
Here are some comments from them from the article linked above in support of the stadium.
Quote:Brad Dean, president of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, supported the move, saying the expansion would help the local economy by bringing more visitors here.
“The stadium is part of a much larger expansion plan in the Sun Belt Athletic Conference, which will bring us additional visitors as well as more national publicity, all of which favorably positions our Grand Strand community for job growth,” he said. “As Coastal Carolina University grows, so grows our local presence as well as our ever-important tourism industry, which provides the economic engine for our local economy.”

Glad to hear this for Coastal. The CHE board really appeared to be uncooperative by not providing Coastal any idea of what type numbers they wanted to see. They acted like Lucy with the football.

We had a great thread back over on coastalfans.com about our area trying to get a bowl and the possible bowl names... Some real gems in there. My personal fav was (you have to understand local issues/pet peeves but...) the "$20 Helicopter Tour Bowl"

Are y'all going to try to go with the 22K verson (or whatever it was) or the 19K version, now that this step has been by-passed. I seem to remember that you had scaled down your stadium expansion due to trying to get it past this board.

We scaled down the budget, but not necessarily the capacity.
They are still saying low 20 thousands.
But just ask Florida RedWolf. It will be 16k according to him.
