Hilarious...

If you don't get why this one is funny, take a close look at the hashtags.

And the team website went up before the final announcement, spilling the beans early.

I like the trend.

Funny thing about that Freudian slip is that if the NFL does move the Raiders to Las Vegas, the NHL will be even less relevant to the locals.

I assume the "Vegas Golden Knights" are hoping to establish fierce rivalries with the Angeles Kings and the Jose Sharks.

RE: OT: Next up on the expansion train - the NHL
thought I'd weigh in on how some of these predictions went...so far:

(06-14-2016 07:19 AM)Dr. Isaly von Yinzer Wrote:  Now that the Pittsburgh Penguins have claimed their fourth Stanley Cup in franchise history (hallowed be thy name), expansion now moves to the top of the NHL's agenda.

Here are 10 bold expansion predictions from reading a lot of stories and the tea leaves:

1.) The NHL will announce in June that it is expanding for the 2017–18 season. That means that we are about to see a flurry of trades league-wide as teams try to prepare for the expansion draft and protect themselves from losing valuable assets for nothing.
Correct. but the teams didn't exactly see Vegas' strategy an made some bad moves that helped Vegas once the expansion draft and trades came and went.

2.) The NHL will also announce in June it is going to expand to Las Vegas but it will not expand to any other city...yet.
Correct. Vegas was indeed the first expansion city announced.

3.) When Seattle gets its act together regarding a new arena in that city, they will get the NHL's 32nd team. I think they're probably two years away on that front.
Correct. Seattle finally will get their team playing in 2021-2022 season. Expnasion Draft coming up in 2021. I somehow don't think they'll be as successful as quickly as Vegas was, as other GMs have learned from some of their mistakes. But Seattle oes have nice sweaters and will sell a lot of merch.

4.) The Las Vegas expansion team will be extremely successful. This is nothing like the Arizona situation – which is mostly an issue of arena location. This arena is right on the Vegas strip and it will be extremely popular for home and visiting fans.
Correctamundo. This was kind of an understatement, looking back, huh? Vegas Golden Knights were simply the most successful expansion team in major American sports history, advancing to their sports finals in their very first year, and making the playoffs all four years of their existence so far.

That Las Vegas team is going to have a hell of a home ice advantage, I can tell you that much.
Correct, mostly. Had most points in regular eason, and home ice was a near lock for the Knights in regular seasons. Although, Montreal might beg to differ a little after this past semifinal series.

5.) Quebec City will eventually get a team but it won't be for a few years and it will be through relocation, not expansion. My bet is that it will either be Florida or Carolina but it won't happen until the Canadian dollar recovers and each of the existing markets has been fully exhausted.
Jury Still Out on this one...Pirate is scared?

6.) Depending on who moves, that could spark further realignment.
Incomplete. Not so far...stay tuned.

7.) The Oakland Raiders are moving to Las Vegas and that will happen sooner rather than later and the announcement of the move is going to come quicker than some seem to realize.
Correct. Raiders have not done too well so far on field or in attendance, though the coronabug had a lot more to do with that. Eventually, Vegas will fully back them as the team culture and Vegas are a good marketing match. But, unanticipatedly so, the Golden Knight Hockey team's early and sustained mega-success has endeared them to the somewhat transient residents of the city of 2+ million and given them a cohesive identity to rally around outside of gambling. The longer the Goldne Knights can sustain success, the more of a tradition they will help establish. Now, how about that Stanley Cup before this run of players is done?

8.) The NFL will be fabulously successful in Las Vegas. Visiting fans will regularly flow into the city to take advantage of all of the things that it has the offer. Raiders fans from California will also make it over, and tourists from elsewhere will attend those games as well - and that's before even mention the people that already live and/or work in Las Vegas.
Not so correct and/or Incomplete so far. see: Bug; corona, and Golden Knights; wildly successful and fun Hockey team.

Honestly, this is the best possible outcome, IMO.
well, still posssible but it's gonna take longer than first thought. Only 8 home games, though so this should eventually happen.

9.) The Chargers are going to build a brand new stadium in San Diego.
Wrong. Can't get 'em all. But LA just too big a lure.

10.) Ten years from now, the Los Angeles Rams will still be the only team in the nation's second-largest media market.
Wrong so far. Don't see the Chargers moving, but stranger things have occasionally happened and you still have a few years left in your 10 to see it happen (don't hold your breath, though.)

Overall you did a pretty good job with your predictions. See quoted post above with Bold and Italics for comments.

I'm not scared of the Canes relocating. Dundon has too much of a good thing going right now. About the only angle could be a new arena but the split with ncsu for hoops might be the cost saver and the only other way I see a canes only arena coming might be more a factor if rdu getting a mls team.

I really like the Carolina Hurricanes and hope they stay. I've always lived in Texas but my first NHL game was San Jose @ Carolina in Fall 2001 so there's a soft spot. Carolina won the game and lost in the Stanley Cup Finals to Detroit. Incidentally, my 2nd NHL game was Anaheim @ Dallas (2003 Playoffs) - Anaheim won and lost in the Stanley Cup Finals to New Jersey.

I expect teams to relocate in the next 5-10 years and my money is on Arizona and Florida. The "Desert" can truly only support one team. Vegas, in 4 seasons, has far-and-away surpassed anything Arizona has done in 25 years. Same can be said for the State of Florida - only one team is necessary and Tampa Bay has been on fire. I'd love for Houston to have a team but the State of Texas is in a similar boat.

I would like to see the Quebec Nordiques return and perhaps a team in Portland or Milwaukee.

I don't think you're gonna see anyone relocating any time soon. New cities will be served via expansion. I think it's clear the league wants more teams, & simply relocating a team doesn't fulfill that.

I'd like to see Milwaukee & Kansas City, tho think Quebec City is most likely.

Uhh, Whalers moved to Carolina.... a one time move is a history? We're no Las Vegas Raiders....or was that Oakland... or was that LA?

Or the LA, St. Louis, LA Rams...

Or the Chicago, St. Louis, Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals....

Without looking it up at the moment I think the NBA had multiple relocations with the Clippers and the Kings.

Rochester, Cincinnati, Kansas City-Omaha/KC, Sacramento....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angeles_Clippers

Yeah, Buffalo, San Diego, LA

Yeah, for the NHL to truly expand its appeal and gain ground on the other major sports leagues they need to develop southern markets and you don't do that by retreating from Arizona and Florida. That, and expansion has brought a fresh $1.2 billion in cash to the league between Vegas and Seattle so that's hard to pass up.

There are a number of large markets without NBA teams they could expand to (thinking of Kansas City, Austin, Hampton Roads, or San Diego) and that's where they should target imo. Their best non-traditonal or southern markets are ones with no NBA competition (Tampa Bay, Nashville, Vegas), I don't think that's a coincidence. They can expand to one of those and always fill out with a Canadian city like Quebec or Hamilton that'll support a team well (but wouldn't expand hockey's reach like the league wants).

There are a few markets that would've probably worked if the NHL went there earlier but probably wouldn't now. Chicago is large enough to have a second team and the Hawks were lousy for so long that a rival could've carved out a fan base (likely in the burbs) but not anymore. Same for Baltimore and the Caps also to a lesser extent. They were looking into Suburban Toronto a few years back and that could've worked, but the Leafs are too powerful to allow someone into their market even with compensation.

The only way I could see the NHL going to 36 would be to make the four conference alignment permanent:

West - VAN, CGY, EDM, SEA, SJ, LA, ANA, VGK, AZ
Central - WPG, MN, CO, STL, NSH, CHI, DAL, HOU*, MIL*
Atlantic - MTL, OTT, BOS, NYI, NYR, NJ, PHI, WAS, QUE*
East - FL, TB, CAR, DET, TOR, CLB, PIT, BUF, ATL*

36 may be 20-30 years down the road, if ever, but I always like the mental activity of this!

Here’s my thoughts for this exercise:
- Arizona (Phoenix) and Florida (Miami) will have relocated.
- Atlanta has failed twice and will not be given a third opportunity.
- Houston (my childhood hometown) will not get a team, unfortunately, but will be the ever-threatened relocation destination.

Relocations:
- Arizona to Milwaukee : Wisconsin is a great hockey state; could use the current AHL name “Admirals”; could share an arena with the Bucks
- Florida to Quebec City : hockey in Quebec City should never have not been a thing; returning the name “Nordiques”

Expansions:
- Cleveland : I needed a 36th city and I don’t see Atlanta or Houston getting the bid; the “Barons” could share an arena with the Cavaliers
- San Francisco : I like the idea of the Bay Area having a second team; the “California Golden Seals” could share an arena with the Warriors
- Salt Lake City : shot in the dark franchise; could share an arena with the Jazz; could use current ECHL name the “Grizzlies”
- Toronto (second team) : large enough Canadian city to host two teams; I like the name “St. Patricks”

Alignment (4 conferences):

North: Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Quebec Nordiques, Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto St. Patricks, Vancouver Canucks, Winnipeg Jets

West: Anaheim Ducks, California Golden Seals, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Las Vegas Golden Knights, Los Angeles Kings, Salt Lake Grizzlies, San Jose Sharks, Seattle Kraken

Midwest: Chicago Blackhawks, Cleveland Barons, Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings, Milwaukee Admirals, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, Pittsburgh Penguins, St. Louis Blues

East: Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals

Columbus says hi and no way, Jose on Cleveland.

Atlanta was wronged by its previous owners in regards to why they lost their second NHL franchise. Atlanta Spirit should have never received the Thrashers to begin with because all they cared about was the Hawks and Atlanta Spirit almost moved the Hawks back to St. Louis had not the mayor of Atlanta stepped in and intervened.

AsFAIC they can take the sorry Hawks back to St Louis, they won't be missed. Give Atlantans a real owner and give the Hockey back that Atlantans have shown good support for both times...crappy ownership the second time (Thrashers) and a real estate bust in late 70's (caused by you know who) took hockey to Calgary the first time. Fans were strong and supportive both times, so fans will come again for Hockey in ATLANTA.

Why was the real estate bust Carter’s fault?
