Sounds good, on moving the Raiders and Clippers there!

Then to find new homes for Angels, Ducks and A's ...

That would mean 31 teams right? Why not go ahead with #32 to make it even?

Hmm he wants to go with Black Knights?

I assume it would something casino themed like...

Aces?

Jokers?

Bandits?

Outlaws?

Rebels (thinking like UNLV here)?

The only thing in the nhl.com article I saw about a #32 is about Qubec. I know they had the Nordiques back in the day but the article reads more like the Canadian currency valuation along with being more eastern make it not a good choice at this time.

This is going to be a collossal failure. The NHL should be going to Canada and US states within a few hundred miles of Canada, not a Sun Belt sprawl town that doesn't care about sports. Looks like they've learned nothing of their experiences in Miami, Atlanta (x2), Phoenix and even Dallas (lukewarm support there).

Correct, Quebec put a bid in. But the NHL really wants Seattle, which would balance out the East and West and add another US city that is close to Canada without being in Canada. In addition to what the article states about the Canadian dollar being down, players would rather pay US taxes than Canadian taxes.

The part about not wanting to expand with two teams at once is bull. They are just stalling to let Seattle get their ducks in a row. I mean, they shouldn't expand too quickly, but when has a league ever cared about that? Especially when expansion nets each owner a huge wad of cash.

Well, it looks like a couple months ago the city killed what looks to be the perfect location for Seattle's new arena that would bring back the Sonics and possibly host an NHL team, as well:

I wonder how much the NBA basically screwing them over with the Key Arena debacle and the Thunder owners shady dealings to move the team, have affected the city's desire to cave? I think they want an NBA team, but probably don't feel any urgency to give up things to prepare for one, without having one on the table.

The stadium vote was a blow but is wasn't deadly. There are other options on the table for Seattle.

I think one of the issues is the NBA; they don't feel like they need to expand right now. If Silver came out an said the NBA was adding 2 teams Seattle would have their stadium situation squared away in fifteen minutes. But the NBA and NHL are different, and so it's going to take a little more time for Seattle to be ready for the NHL. I'd say it will happen by 2020 though.

corbett,

Reading the article, I think it truly came down to lobbying by the Port of Seattle and the union representing the port workers. They didn't want the arena in the proposed location and fought it hard.

I think it played a big role, which has put the city in a chicken/egg position. The NHL is not enough to get Seattle to build a new arena, but without a new place, the NBA won't commit.

Also, how pissed are you if you are KCMO? They went a built the Sprint Center and got nothing but crickets from the NHL. But Vegas builds T-Mobile and gets s new team in a year?

Kansas City built an arena? For what? I don't recall their name being in any kind of serious consideration for a NBA or NHL team. I mean, I guess they could use one for civic minded stuff like conventions and concerts but...

I don't think they built it "for" an NHL or NBA team. I think he is just pointing out how little traction they had, despite having a brand spanking NHL/NBA ready arena just waiting for a team, should one want to come.

RE: OT: Next up on the expansion train - the NHL
I heard Kansas City's name come up plenty of times but nothing came of it. Which goes to show you don't build a stadium without something in writing or a lock solid handshake that you're getting a tenant to play there, unless the plan was for them to host concerts, conference tournaments and high school events and I know for a fact it wasn't.

New Orleans also did this but got lucky on a number of fronts, first that the Hornets moved after they had an outside shot at the Rockets and that politics demanded that the Hornets stay a decade ago because of rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina (which in turn robbed the Sonics from Seattle when it should have been the Hornets moving there, as New Orleans can barely support pro sports).

In New Orleans' case though, it was not a full scale NBA arena, in terms of amenities, and they only upgraded it once they got a team. So the risk was lower. Same as OKC.

True but you still don't build it too quickly.
