UNCW Baseball - 2017 Thread
Found out tonight that redshirt freshman arm Robbie Casey will be joining the Sharks this week.

Also, Ryan Jeffers was used as a pitcher in relief tonight, which was interesting. Didn't allow a run in his inning of work and even struck out a pair of batters while throwing only fastballs.

Nick Feight and Brian Mims both made their first appearances for Team USA yesterday against the Santa Barbara Foresters of the California Collegiate League. In a 10-6 win for Team USA in Los Angeles, both entered the game in the later innings: Feight went 1-1 with a run scored, while Mims was 0-2 with a strikeout.

The roster, currently at 29, will be cut down to 24 by July 5 and then make a trip to Taichung, Taiwan for a 5-game series against Chinese Taipei.

In other news:

* Josh Roberson had his best outing of the summer for the Cotuit Kettleers last night. In a 5-4 loss to the Bourne Braves, Roberson replaced starting pitcher David Gerics (Pomona-Pitzer College) in the first inning after Gerics allowed 4 runs on 3 hits and only recorded one out. Roberson tossed 3.2 innings, allowing 1 unearned run on 7 hits, striking out 3 and walking none to keep the Kettleers in the contest. He lowered his ERA from 9.00 to 4.69 with the effort and now has an 8 K/3 BB ratio, though his 2.22 WHIP is still quite high.

Feight and Mims were left off the 24-man Team USA roster headed to Taiwain July 5: http://web.usabaseball.com/article.jsp?y...=news_usab

In more positive news, Ryan Jeffers had a big night for the Sharks. In a 9-8 win over Edenton, he went 2-5 with 2 RBI, and played a big role in the game-winning run that scored in the bottom of the 9th; after he singled a runner to 3rd, an error by the Steamers on the play resulted in the 9th run coming across the plate. He upped his batting average from .231 to .258 on the summer season.

RE: UNCW Baseball - 2017 Thread
Happy 4th weekend everybody! Some more updates for you on our Summer Seahawks:

* Redshirt freshman RHP Robby Casey made his Sharks debut last night, in a 5-4 win over the Wilson Tobs. Casey entered in the 7th inning and tossed 2 innings of shutout ball, allowing just 2 baserunners and striking out 1. From what I could tell, he only threw fastballs, and appeared to be tossing in the low 90s.

* Austin Magestro made his 3rd appearance of the season for the Chatham Anglers (Cape Cod League) on Wednesday night. In an 8-2 victory over Cotuit, he closed out the game by striking out the side in the 9th.

* Nick Feight and Brian Mims are finishing up their tenure with Team USA today in Compton, California against the Urban Youth Academy Barons. 2 days ago against the Barons, Mims drove in a run in the 8th in a 5-0 win. Neither player made the International roster, and thus will head back to their Summer teams after today.

Former Seahawk News, Cody Stanley tested positive for the third time and expects to receive a lifetime ban from MLB. WTH is he thinking?

He's turned into a stain on the MLB and sadly, a poor representation of UNCW baseball. Sad to see.

I was wondering what had become of Cody. A real shame that he evidently couldn't keep things in line. A waste of good talent. At this point I can only hope that others can learn from his very costly mistake.

Who is the highest drafted Seahawk ever? I know he was 4th round.

Brad Holt, 2008. Taken in the compensatory 1st round, # 30 overall, by the Mets. Never reached the bigs though.

RE: UNCW Baseball - 2017 Thread
Let's return to positive baseball news, shall we?

* Through 7 relief appearances for the Cotuit Kettleers in the Cape Cod League, Josh Roberson is one of the team's top performers. In 12.2 innings of work, Roberson has struck out 16 batters, converted a save, and has a 2.84 ERA. His WHIP is still high (1.72), but in a competitive league he's doing an awesome job. Due in part to his help, the Kettleers are 6-3-1 in their last 10 contests.

* Redshirt freshman RHP Robby Casey made his first start of the summer for the Sharks on Friday. Throwing on a pitch count, Casey faced 16 batters in 4.0 innings of work, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits while walking 2. He took the loss, however, as the Sharks ended up falling 2-1 to Fayetteville. It was encouraging to note that he forced 6 ground ball outs to 4 fly ball outs, showing an ability to pound the bottom part of the strike zone.

* Sophomore 1B Walker Imwalle has strung together some really nice games lately for the Shelter Island Bucks of the Hamptons League. The 6-4, 245 lbs. lefty hitter is 9 for his last 22 (.409), with 4 multi-hit games, a HR, 6 RBI and 7 Runs Scored. He also hasn't struck out at the plate in his last 3 contests, after beginning the year with 15 strikeouts in his first 7 games. At one time he was hitting as low as .065 with a .254 OPS, and now sits at .208 and .623, respectively.

RE: UNCW Baseball - 2017 Thread
Imwalle has continued his hot streak with Shelter Island, and has now collected at least one hit in 8 of his last 9 games. He's only had 14 hits in total on the season, but 12 of them have been collected in that 9-game span.

This is a great sign for the next 2-3 years at 1B. After Corey Dick graduated, it left a void at that spot in the infield, but if Imwalle becomes a capable D-I caliber hitter, that would mean we would have guys hitting from both sides available (Canada is a right-handed batter, Imwalle hits left-handed). Imwalle also looks the part of a 1B, at 6-4, 245 lbs., and has flashed the leather (.984 fielding % and 8 assists) as well.

Connelly is another option as well, but I imagine the preference would be for him to handle 3B duties, with Daniel Stack DH-ing. Scalf has a lot of options available, it would seem.

An additional note: It looks like Canada has primarily been playing 3B for the Upper Valley Nighthawks in the NECBL. He's also listed as "3B/LF" on their roster page. It probably means that Upper Valley needed him to play 3B/LF more than it says anything about Coach Scalf's future plans, but it's also nice to know he can play multiple positions.

Jeez. Imwalle came off the bench and hit a HR last night for Shelter Island. Hot streak continues.

Nick Feight, less surprisingly, is on a bit of a tear himself. Currently on a 6-game hitting streak that has included 2 HR and three multi-hit games. Nice job by Feight to have success with the wooden bats and potentially improve his draft stock for next June.

* Zack Canada hit his first HR of the Summer for the Upper Valley Nighthawks, a 2-run bomb in a 9-2 victory over Winnipesaukee. He's hitting .241 (20-83) with 6 RBI in the NECBL.

* Nick Stuart also had a big night for the Fuquay Varina Twins in the Carolina-Virginia league. In an 8-5 loss to North Wake, he went 2-4 with a double and 3 RBI. He's now hitting .286 (14-49) with 11 RBI.

Junior righty Justin Crump, who has mostly had a disappointing summer pitching in the Valley League for the New Market Rebels (Virginia), has strung together a few nice performances of late to drop his ERA to 5.88. In his last 6 appearances out of the bullpen, he's pitched a total of 10.0 innings and has only allowed 1 earned run.

Last night, in a 17-2 win over Front Royal, Crump tossed the final 2 innings, striking out 2 and only allowing 1 baserunner.

RE: UNCW Baseball - 2017 Thread
* In the Cape Cod League, Nick Feight had a big night, going 3-5 with a double and 2 runs scored in a Harwich 10-0 win over Austin Magestro's team, Chatham. Magestro did not appear in the contest, with his last outing coming on Jul 10th. Feight is now hitting .278 (20-72) with 3 HR, 9 RBI and 11 Runs for the Mariners, who are now 23-13 this Summer.

* Meanwhile, for the Sharks, Feight's current backup catcher Ryan Jeffers, who started hot (.278, 5-18 with 7 RBI in his first 6 games) but has been mired in nearly a Summer-long slump ever since (.153, 8-52 with 6 RBI in his last 16 games played), finally contributed with a late RBI single in a 3-1 win over Fayetteville last night. The Sharks are now 29-17 overall, winners of 6 of their last 7, and have the 2nd best record in the CPL. But Jeffers, whose average sits at .186 on the season, hasn't been a big reason for that, unfortunately. Arkansas catcher Grant Koch (hitting .221 with 4 HR, 19 RBI) has started 33 games this year, nearly all of them behind the plate, and thrown out 19 runners, relegating Jeffers to backup catcher duties or the DH role this Summer.

Told that Jeffers has been seeing a ton of breaking stuff and has really struggled. He does throw the ball very well and could end up as a pitcher.

C Ryan Jeffers had a monster night for the Sharks last night. In a 6-5 loss to Forest City, Jeffers went 4-4 with a HR, a pair of doubles and 2 RBI. He was a triple away from hitting for the cycle. Jeffers slugged 2.250 on the evening, raising his season Slugging % to .436, tied for 3rd on the Sharks. Jeffers also lifted his batting average from .203 to .244 (19-78).
