Sources have confirmed to the DN-R, one of JMU's non-conference football games this spring will be on Feb. 27 against Robert Morris at Bridgeforth Stadium.

That's what I'm talking about! Quality opponents! I bet Larry's Lawnmower Repair Academy would beat Robert Morris by 40.
Smart move to schedule them as a warmup game. Lots of players lost and breaking in a new QB.

In terms of an exciting quality match-up, this one hardly registers. If there is spring FCS football, and if for some reason we can't win the CAA auto-bid, at least we have that out of conference game against NEC powerhouse RMU to help us make our case for an at-large bid.

Any word on our second OOC? Guess it’s all starting from scratch now. Don’t imagine Chatty is any more likely than any number of closer options.

If people think scheduling games during normal times is tough, imagine a season with only 5 at large playoff bids. No playoff caliber FCS team is going to play JMU.

There is no pleasing some people. This season is going to have a giant asterisk on it no matter what so just be happy to watch the dukes after a year of dealing with this ****

I understand your logic and agree. However, that’s not the context for people’s unhappiness playing RMU (from my POV). It stems from unhappiness in our FCS schedule in general, I believe. We can all stomach a cupcake on the schedule when we have 11-12 games with one against an attractive FBS opponent. Even with 12 games, people don’t like two cupcakes. I sure hope we can schedule our second OOC game against a legit FCS team, even if we go the chaotic route of scheduling a CAA team from the North division.

This makes me very sad.

Me, too! My sadness is exceeded only by my frustration.

Well...we can maybe say that the Robert Morris game helped Marcus Marshall's NFL stock? If I recall correctly he had a monster game that day and some of those highlights were probably seen. Then again, he probably could have done that against any remotely competitive opponent.

At least our guys will put up some solid stats 03-banghead
RMU did go 6-1 in the terrible NEC if that counts for anything.

Yep.
RMU in 2018: 0-9 vs Div I (2 Div II wins/0-6 in the NEC)
RMU 2019 playing a tougher schedule 7-5/6-1 in the NEC.

In 2018 they were a COMPLETE DUMPSTER FIRE. That HC of has done a phenomenal job with a huge turn around. Was a Eddie Robinson finalist for National Coach of the year. My guess is he isn’t at RMU for long, as he will be poached.
https://rmucolonials.com/sports/football...k-jr-/1269
Anyone who thinks this RMU team will be similar to the one faced 2 years ago hasn’t been paying attention. I see JMU winning this comfortably by 30-40ish. Its not going to be by 66. And thats assuming pro prospects like Fornadel & Greene play in the Winter/Spring..

7-5, 6-1 in the NEC last season.

Spot on......folks don't seem to get the nuances of scheduling to maximize playoffs potential, seeding, and maximum home playoff games.

Maybe if we have some home playoff games those that are quick to ***** about the scheduling but then are always too busy to come to playoff games will make an appearance. Weber St, UNI, SDSU, etc.....at home in the playoffs is the goal which maximizes potential for a run to the title game.

I think many are spoiled by the run of success. When you can no longer schedule guaranteed Ws or you are somebody else’s cupcake will make you rethink that viewpoint. With so many key losses in the lineup and so long between games (and w/o a true spring ball) a team that is breaking in a new QB will need this type of warmup game.

You get it. I welcome a cupcake opponent for a much needed warm up with a new starting QB, many new starters on both sides of the ball and the fact that we haven't played football in one year, one month and 9 days.

Agreed, this is a fair take despite what my previous post said. Also echoing what someone else said about this RMU team not exactly being the same pushover we saw in 2018. I still think we will win by 30+ but it is needed in a shorter CAA season without a championship game and Covid practices.

In the words of Cheech and Chong, "Don't misundertake me."

Our problem isn't just that we can only schedule chumps like Robert Friggin Morris because we beat the crap out of any other FCS team not from Fargo, North Dakota.
And, what FBS team would schedule us, risking an embarrassing and costly loss to an FCS team?

We can't schedule decent competition because we are a mid-level FBS-caliber team stuck in FCS jerseys.

Our whole problem is.... wait for it....

WE ARE STUCK IN FCS!!!!

RE: Future FB Schedule (currently 2021-2028)
Good article on Matt Browns extra points - it’s a subscription web site snd the article was based on public information requests around JMUs attempt to schedule.

JMU tried to schedule the following FBS schools: Virginia, Old Dominion, Liberty, Temple, Army, UNC Charlotte, Marshall, and East Carolina. No interest or takers.

JMU tried to schedule the following FCS schools: University of Tennessee Chattanooga, Merrimack, Presbyterian, VMI, Charleston Southern, Gardner-Webb, Campbell, East Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech, St. Francis, Elon, Villanova, Robert Morris, Austin Peay, Stephen F. Austin State, Duquesne, Sacred Heart and Western Carolina.

The confirmed games for Fall were Elon, UNC and Chattanooga. It’s possible they could have continued to dialogue on Stephen Austin or Campbell.

It was a tough call I believe that JMU had to make- did it make sense to play 4 in Fall (I believe they could have still played Spring) if that was your schedule? I can see both sides of it but I do know one thing the same fans who complained that they haven’t played this Fall would probably have been underwhelmed with the Fall schedule. Imo if you had a couple of other FBS games lined up it’s a no brainer but for one FBS game and a few FCS I’m not so sure. Keep in mind the “exposure” folks are saying the Coastals of the world are getting are against FBS schools. The FCS vs FCS games in this weird season have I think even less coverage than they would normally.

My honest-to-Buddha reaction to the following goes like this...

{Ga State tweets big news that they are hosting Coastal Carolina on Halloween at Noon on ESPN-U}

My reaction: Cool, I can ignore it on ESPN-U just like I would have if on ESPN-3, ESPN+, ESPN, ESPNews, ESPN-2, ESPN-Ocho, or The Weather Channel.

{New Mexico tweets news that their game against Colorado State on October 24 is now cancelled}

My reaction: Cool, I wasn't going to watch it anyway. Hopefully, it will be replaced by Australian Rules Football.

Unless you have money on any of these games or are a fan of one of the teams, generally speaking...nobody cares.

Pretty sure I've seen a couple FCS games pop up on mainstream channels this year (eg CBS sports, NBC), at random places like restaurants and thought "that could have been us". With game inventory down early in the season, some FCS schools and G5's got more airtime, or at least it seems that way.

The scheduling difficulty just drives home why we should be FBS in my mind. We are stuck in no-mans land looking for a good home in some ways. Or at least I hope we are looking.
