Alabama state standard of living -- Part 5
Michael Seale reporting in the latest BBJ news report from WalletHub survey of state's ranking (50 states and D.C.) in nine critical economic categories:
41st - GDP growth
33rd - % of fast growing firms
21st - Exports per capita
43rd - Business start up activity
32nd - % of high tech jobs
47th - Annual median household income
34th - non farm payroll change
45th - state government surplus vs state government deficit
45th - statewide unemployment rate
Overall ranking is 7th worst among the 51 listed.
In the last session of the state legislature, they passed a law guaranteeing that no city or county can raise its local minimum wage thereby assuring Alabama businesses will provide the lowest possible wages in America. We continue to sell our people to the lowest bidder in our market area.
Is it a wonder that so many of our "best & brightest" leave Alabama for greener pastures? Those with the least to offer in skills, educational attainment, cultural development are NOT the ones offered the best chances to leave the state. Does Alabama run off the best in order to keep the rest? That could explain why Alabama is the ONLY southern sunbelt state now predicted to lose a seat in Congress after the 2020 census while some are adding at least one ( Texas is predicted to add 3).
