It's double elimination with only the top team advancing. So the 2 winners play and the 2 losers play. The loser of the losers game is out, the winner plays the loser of the winners gamr. Loser of that one is out. Remaining 2 teams play until one gets 2 losses.

RE: NCAA Regional
It is a big deal.

While I wouldn't trade my experience playing Tribe baseball in the late 70's for anything, the program in the late 70's had a shoestring budget, minimal money for coaches, minimal scholarship money, and minimal facilities ... competing in an environment in which the Florida, California, and Arizona schools played 60-80 game schedules, had full fall schedules, were awash in scholarship money, and had excellent facilities.

Two big things happened since.

First, the NCAA limited the number of games that schools could play. That allowed the rest of the country to "sort of" catch up. The tournament may also have been expanded from 32 to 64, but I'm not sure about that. Finally, the current set up of Friday - Sunday weekend series became the norm. All of these changes, IMO, have benefitted schools like W&M.

Second, a few people around William and Mary baseball stepped up, prevented the program from being dropped by the school, and provided the resources for facilities and coaching / scholarship money. Also, some very good coaches got the program going in the right direction, and brought in some outstanding talent.

This program could be on the verge of being a consistent winner in the CAA, and being an occasional NCAA participant ... and that is saying a lot given where the program was 40 years ago.

Go Tribe!

ah! thanks. Guess I figured for some reason 2 teams would be advancing.

RE: NCAA Regional
Before there was a Plumeri Field and a football practice field behind the stadium many folks may not realize that was the baseball field. There wasa flimsy bleachers seating, as I recollect, around a hundred people.

There was a big drainage ditch and a stand of trees that ran along the first baseline...players not in the game were designated to run into the woods to recover, if they could, foul balls during games. Foul balls along the left field line sometimes cleared the top of the stadium and, occasionally, would conk somebody on the other side.

Many, many years ago players dressed in their dorm rooms and in the outfield there was no fence. Everybody
played deep!

Finally, there was, of course, no tarp so in the spring the field was always a soaked mess.

The team traveled to road games in the old athletic department wagons...one driven by Coach Tipton and the other four by the players. There was no equipment car, so everything was crammed into the wagons.

For road games we slept at the college we were playing..usually in dorm rooms but at several places
(Va Tech, W&L, West VA) in open rooms with no windows near the running tracks that, as was the custom then, were high up above the gyms. We usually ate at the college cafeteria.

How times have, indeed, changed.

Chased foul balls in the woods ... check!

No tarp ... check!

College cafeteria eating ... check! The dining experience differed by school ... Citadel ... Navy ... Davidson ... JMU.

School vans driven by coaches and players ... check! Nothing like driving in Virginia and North Carolina at 2 am.

No fence ... check! Although the chain link fence that surrounded the site was considered our fence ... cleared maybe once or twice in my time.

We did dress in the away football locker room, which at that time was closest to Richmond Road. That room was large enough for us ... with the usual Cary / Zable plumbing amenities, but I never understood how a visiting football team could cram into that room! Part of home field advantage, I guess. :-)

RE: accommodations for visiting team players. When I returned to W&M in mid-year after taking a semester off there were no dorm rooms available so I was put in the attic of Old Dominion Dorm. It was a very big room, fill of cots, and I don't remember any windows. I do remember sharing the attic on several occasions with players from visiting schools mostly on weekends. After a month or so, a real dorm room became available and I moved to a second floor room in OD.

When you go to UVA website to buy tickets, nothing behind the plate or on 1st or 3rd base lines is available. Does anyone know if this means they are already sold out? Or are those only open to UVA season ticket holders at this point?

RE: NCAA Regional
All the same in the early/mid 80s.

My favorite bad cafeteria story was at Campbell. We got a bologna and cheese sandwich on white bread, an apple, and a milk carton for lunch. That was what the students got that day. Good grief. My worst place to stay was UNC-Wilmington. We stayed in a cinderblock building right by the field. You got a bunk and had to use the toilet in an open room with no stalls. The toilets faced each other so you could have a dump off. Concrete floors completed the ambiance.

To further the vans and driving to games, most of the time coach Jones let the players drive the vans. His favorite place to take us was somewhere like Golden Corral.

When we did have the luxury of staying in a hotel it was four to a room. So we would take the mattresses off of the beds and flip a coin to see who got the mattress and who got to sleep on the box springs. Someone got the comforter and someone got the sheets. Those were the days.

Hey, the place we stayed on Campus when playing VMI (early 70's) had bars on the windows. It did NOT make me feel more secure.

I found all session tickets for 47 dollars. I don't think you can buy them game by game.

Sabre message board implied plenty of tics available and anticipate single game tics available all days...Tribe site had single day tics available today.

Murphy quoted a couple of days ago as considering starting Powers or Sheehan on Friday...Would be an interesting choice to give the freshman a chance to redeem himself after getting thrown into the fire for 9 runs back in February. Interesting dynamics.

I think you have to start Powers. He's been the most consistent pitcher the second half of the season and doesn't seem to get blown out in any outing.

If you throw Sheehan you are basically admitting that you will lose the first game which puts you in a lose and go home mode right away.

I'd save Brown for game two regardless and hope it is in the winners bracket

If Brown hadn't thrown so many pitches in the CAA tournament, he would have been the best choice. While Powers and Sheehan have improved a lot the 2nd half of the season, neither guy really has swing and miss stuff, which will make it tough to slow down UVA's offense

Know nothing of UVA baseball, but does not appear to be there top arm (2-5 record with 5+ ERA). UVA taking the Tribe lightly?
