The site of the 2021 Super Bowl...

http://www.latimes.com/sports/nfl/la-sp-...story.html
Quote:NFL owners voted Tuesday to award the 2021 game to the nation’s second largest market for the first time since 1993. The game will be played at the yet-to-be-constructed Inglewood stadium, which is scheduled to open for the 2019 season.

The league took the unprecedented step of awarding three Super Bowls on a single day, games that will be played in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Atlanta was awarded the game capping the 2019 season, and South Florida was awarded the next one. New Orleans and Tampa, Fla., were not selected as sites.

For those of you who don't know the neighborhood 03-wink, that's the Forum in the background, home of the Lakers and NHL Kings from the late 60s through the 90s.

What a waste. At least the Rams' stadium is privately financed unless I missed something (if so, I assume citizen taxpayers basically aren't the hook).

At least the 2018 game in Mpls has a good, solidly finished stadium:

The NFL is pretty clear: build a new stadium, get the Super Bowl.

San Diego, 2022
Las Vegas, 2023

Who's due for a new stadium next, after that?

St Louis Jaguars new stadium, 2024?

Except LA is for certain going to be in the Super Bowl rotation. If San Diego builds one, they will be too.

It's true - no public financing for stadium construction. There will be a tax kickback: some of the tax revenue collected at the stadium will go back to the Rams. I think it has to be used for the stadium or associated facilities/infrastructure (e.g. security, lighting, etc.).

Hopefully there won't be a need for a "rotation". The stadiums can keep turning over every 25 years or so, and the Super Bowl can constantly be traveling to the new stadiums. That would be fun!

The Jaguars aren't moving. Saint Louis isn't building a stadium; been there, done that, learned the lesson.

There's been a rotation since the very first AFL-NFL Championship Game. That hasn't and won't change. LA, Miami, New Orleans, Arlington (for now), Tampa, The Valley of the Sun and San Diego (also for now) will always be in the rotation as long as they each have a stadium suitable for the Super Bowl and an NFL franchise. Look for Vegas to join that rotation if the Raiders or Chargers move there while Atlanta, Houston, San Jose/Sillicon Valley and any place with a dome will get the occasional game. Still waiting on Charlotte to get a game, they barely qualify based on the high tmperature rule. San Antonio could get in the rotation if anyone moves there.

Just like with multiple teams in the same market, that's just the way these things work and besides, there's only so many cities that can host based on the HT rule and the fact a team needs to be present in the market so by deafult there's a handful of cities that will get a game every decade, if not 2.

RE: The site of the 2021 Super Bowl...
RE: "The rotation" commentary

The following are the only stadiums that are realistically eligible to host the Super Bowl:

AT&T Stadium
Bank of America Stadium
Joe Robbie Stadium (because I'm tired of keeping up with each new name for Sun Life Stadium)
EverBank Field
Ford Field
Inglewood Rams Stadium
Levi's Stadium
The Louisiana Superdome (I don't care what it's called right now)
Lucas Oil Stadium
Mercedes-Benz Stadium (the Falcons new stadium, not the Superdome)
Nissan Stadium (Titans)
NRG Stadium
Qualcomm Stadium
Raymond James Stadium
University of Phoenix Stadium
US Bank Stadium (the Vikings new stadium)

--Of those, Nissan and BofA are merely technicalities as Super Bowls will come once a half century, if that. So too is Qualcomm, which will hold a Super Bowl watch party before another game. The owners and fans like Super Bowls in warm weather climates, so sayanara to any place in the Frost Belt except the occassional bone they may get. Jacksonville and EverBank passes every facet except they simply don't have enough hotel rooms. I omitted The Meadowlands because that was a one time special event. Oakland could be on there but seriously, it's not even a thought worth entertaining.

That leaves us with:

AT&T Stadium
Inglewood Rams Stadium
Joe Robbie Stadium
Levi's Stadium
Mercedes-Benz Stadium
The Louisiana Superdome
NRG Stadium
Raymond James Stadium
University of Phoenix Stadium

So we're left with 9 stadiums and there's even an elite class among those. Throw in a Las Vegas stadium and we're looking at a clear rotation of 6-8 stadiums that will routinely host the Super Bowl. If San Antonio adds one, it will be among the worst facilities in the NFL within a decade and will not join the rotation.

RE: The site of the 2021 Super Bowl...
lew,

Nonsense, St Louis was just about to build a new stadium in order to keep the Rams. Simply put, a better stadium was funded in LA. But there's no reason that new riverfront stadium in St Louis can't become a reality for the Jags.

That would be a great geographical fit with Indy and Nashville, without having to change any divisions.

C2,

Unless, like I was saying, every team starts building new stadiums. Then the NFL will have to bring the Super Bowl to every new stadium ... as they've essentially guaranteed thus far for new stadiums. Right?

Surely you can't think the NFL wants the Super Bowl in Minneapolis. But it was the carrot for the new stadium.

Only if the new stadiums have a roof of some kind, at least for those in northern climates. Otherwise, there will be a Super Bowl rotation, just as there always has been. You can either accept that or let it eat you up inside. That rotation will more or less mimic the College Football Playoff Bowl and CG structure as well with the same exact stadiums, minus the historic Rose Bowl of course and in addition to the Rams new stadium.

I'm fine with that. A lot of the newer, northern stadiums are domed. They have to be that way to get public money. "A people's stadium, and multi-event center". You ain't getting $500M public money for eight days a year.

Minneapolis, Indy, Detroit. All got/are getting Super Bowls. You can bet the same for the next time Boston, Cleveland, Buffalo, Cincy, Pittsburgh, etc come up for a new building.

RE: The site of the 2021 Super Bowl...
I doubt it. A roof, let alone a retractable roof, is absurdly expensive, so many places will not build them. Another factor is that indoor football simply isn't the same as outdoor football. Of those northern places that have roofs, only Indy stands a chance of getting into the rotation, as they are extremely good at hosting major events, so good you can arrive at your hotel and never step outside into the harsh Indiana winter once during your visit if in the winter months, including walking into Lucas Oil Stadium from the convntion center (and previously the RCA Dome). They don't just give them the Final Four so often because the NCAA is HQ'd there. Minny has an outside shot but as I'm sure you know all too well, a Minnesota winter is ridiculously harsh.

And even if some of these places build domes aside from NYC/NJ, Washington and perhaps Seattle and Denver, I don't think many could ever dream of getting into the rotation. They're either Rust Belt relics or so cold, no visitor wants to spend more than a day in them in February, if not both.
