Who is W&M's Lone Player in the NFL Hall of Fame?
We at the W&M Sports Blog thought it would be awesome to write an article about, who else?! Lou Creekmur. We're sure most students have NEVER heard of him. Odds are most of you on this board have. We had to do a little digging, but it was well worth it.

Below is our article on Lou's W&M career, as well as his NFL career--which includes some good history (and even some awesome game footage of Lou!). He'll always be remembered as one of William & Mary's all-time greats. Roll Tribe.

RE: Who is W&M's Lone Player in the NFL Hall of Fame?
Creekmur played at W&M with a star-studded team that featured others who played well in the NFL:
tackle George Hughes (Steelers), team captain and center/LB Tommy Thompson (Browns), and fb/db Jack
"Flyin" Cloud (Redskins and Packers).

It's always an argument who was our greatest player...there's Creekmur, plus Cloud, QB/DB/P Charlie Sumner,
tackle Marvin Bass, and--dare I mention his name--DB/S Darren Sharper. All were dominating players.

But the greatest, in my and many others opinion, was the great defensive and offensive guard, Gerrard
"Buster" Ramsey...from the great 1940, 1941 and 1942 squads. William & Mary's first College Football Hall of Fame inductee (the other is Cloud), he was AP All-American and was named to the All-Century state of Virginia football team.

But a real measure of how people look at Ramsey is that no William & Mary player has worn his uniform number, #20, since his graduation in 1943. While W&M does not officially retire football numbers (and I have no idea why they do not) no W&M coach has assigned #20 to a player since Ramsey wore it.
That speaks for itself.

As a kid I saw Creekmur play for the Lions in Griffith Stadium vs the Redskins. He played next to Dick Stanfil who later played for Washington. They had some great players including a left footed punter Pat Studstill. I think Bobby Layne was on that team with Joe Schmidt and the great Yale Larry. It reminds me of the expression of ' men made of iron and ships made of wood'. Point is that Creekmur was a man among men.

Actually, no one wore it for a whole game. Small rare piece of trivia is that Mike Clemons wore it for part of a game once in 1986 (I believe). His jersey was torn and while it was being repaired on the sideline, the spare jersey he wore was #20.

Every time Ramsey’s name comes up someone writes in that “no Tribe player has ever worn his #20 in a game since then, etc, etc”.........I hate to be the one who ruins this story but #20 was worn by Al Tafro (class of ‘80 I believe) all four years he played football at W&M. Tafro was a WR during his playing days at W&M. I’m not trying to discredit how great Ramsey must have been in his day but the story about his number “never handed out to another player at W&M” just isn’t true.
