And I'll give them a year for trying to figure out the schools master plan.

Leaving 2 years of WTF
The landscape is changing. 4 years ago, TH was our QB, there was a huge waiting list for season tickets and the general public could not get into a game. This is no longer the case... but the AAC would get us back to where we were.

We get in the AAC and it would take us where we have never been but always wanted to go!!!!!!!

We would get a home game against ECU and Navy every other year that would be sure to demand 30k tickets and we might get a top 25 team from time to time and this would demand more capacity, but if we wind up there, it would be because their best team(s) are going to the Big 12. That conference is also pretty far flung and we'd have several low demand games as well. It would certainly boost football and there would be more rivalry, but it would be huge for basketball.

I'd love to move, but in all fairness, CUSA has had many top 25 teams, including WKY just last season and Marshall the year before.

Agree. CUSA isn't terrible in football. The boost in football will come from the AAC being slightly better and the potential rivalries giving us a couple more attendence demanding games, hopefully justifying going big on the stadium so we are ready for ECU and Navy along with UVA and VT. The biggest competition benefit will likely come in basketball. They got 5 teams in last year and would have been 6 if SMU was eligible. Even if 2 bolt to the Big 12, it is a huge upgrade, but chances are 1 of the 2 will be UCF or USF, which is not a huge loss... at least from a competitive standpoint (big market loss).

Was CUSA the top G5 Conference in football two years ago?

I believe it was #2 behind the MWC.

This move would adversely affect our budding rivalry with North Florida Atlanic International University though.

Maybe we could preserve them in our non-con schedule?

Haha...like we have done with fGSU in basketball...since our rivalry is so storied that we had to preserve the old CAA rivalry.

RE: ODU move to the AAC?
Any scenario where the AAC picks UMASS instead of ODU would leave an A10 vacancy and provide the University an opportunity to lobby for that spot. The A10 said it doesn't want to go outside its' footprint so ODU would be a natural choice.

It would no doubt strengthen both men's and women's basketball and VCU can resume it's role as ODU's doormat. Of course the admin would have to decide on what to do with football. Remember, we didn't start talking about losing our sellout streak until we stopped playing W&M, JMU, Richmond and Delaware. For this to make sense, wrestling, with its' far flung conference has to be cut leaving all but sailing and football under one roof.

I'm all for FBS but if this scenario presents itself, ODU has got to take a hard look. It's a financial no-brainer. A lot of domino's would have to fall in a certain direction.

I'm not going to deny that an AAC invitation would be an ideal move. I'd just rather be diplomatic about it. "don't start no stuff, won't be no stuff" right?...lol

With football going where? Back to the CAA.

No thanks, and it's not going to happen anyway.

... football independence

...

... really

....

... no, not really.

But I wonder how difficult it would be to build a consistently respectable football schedule if, for whatever reason, ODU found itself as a football independent. UMass seems to be making a go of it. Idaho couldn't, but they're on an island. ODU would have plenty of regional teams with which they could have home-and-homes or 2-for-1s (and I'm also presuming that in this scenario, there's other FBS independents, again for whatever reason — maybe schools that would rather roll the dice as a G5-level independent than continue in a far-flung G5 conference?)

In all seriousness, the only way ODU could have split the baby in a way that included A-10 basketball is if ODU was invited to replace Temple as UMass's affiliate partner in the MAC, and UMass then supported ODU's admission to the A-10 to replace Butler or Xavier, instead of George Mason. But even that option, if it was even theoretically possible, would have had its issues.

So mayhap we should worry about ODU beating Middle Tennessee in something other than accessibility to the Atlantic and let the chips fall where they may.

Before this realignment mess, Wilder said he looked forward to competing for FCS championships for years to come. I'm sure he would welcome the challenge once again.

I realize a lot of egos would be hurt if the AAC decides on someone else, however the AAC picking UMASS over ODU and a subsequent A10 vacancy are very real possibilities.

ODU can still remain as an FBS independent or ask the Sun Belt to give them the 12th spot as a football only member, but one thing is for sure, CUSA in its present state isn't what ODU bargained for.

If the A10 says the opening is yours, take it or leave it, I'm sure the university would entertain the proposal instead of dismissing it as fast as a S. B. Ballard bid.

It's very clear that accepting an A10 invitation as opposed to staying in CUSA would be a fiscally responsible move by the university, but the real prize would be elevating ODU basketball to a level that fans longed for.

RE: ODU move to the AAC?
The A10 is not going to invite a football school. They want schools that are focused exclusively on basketball as their top priority sport and all of their resources going to it. Richmond and UMass were grandfathered in. Even if the A10 did accept football schools, the CAA wouldn't take us for football only, so it would be independent or nothing. But they don't, so its a moot point. At this point we have three options, help make CUSA stronger, work for an AAC invite, or go back to the CAA. Probably in that order of likelihood. Maybe there will be realignment down the road, but for the foreseeable future thats it.

Like George Mason?

As of now, you could float a line of five aircraft carriers sideways through the gap between the A-10 and CUSA in men's basketball. Anyone who tells you otherwise is as dumb as they are stupid. The numbers speak for themselves.

But you have to keep two things to keep in mind:

1. CUSA isn't always going to be as bad as it was this past season.* There's a core of good basketball schools that for one reason or another haven't performed to expectations lately, but by rights, that won't last.

2. Being in a better conference doesn't always fix what ails you. George Mason was supposed to improve when it upgraded conferences, and that didn't happen. Loyola, Ill. isn't any better in the MVC than it was in whatever damn conference they were in before (Horizon?) Charleston got a better basketball conference and they're still not better. Most of the work falls on the program's shoulders. If ODU wants to have better basketball, ODU has to be better at basketball. That's not on CUSA.

* — also, the conference that ODU bargained for would be even worse in basketball. Memphis and Temple were gone before ODU got the rose. The CUSA that ODU joined traded two bad programs (Tulane, ECU) and one respectable one (Tulsa) for two respectable programs (Middle Tennessee, Western Kentucky) and one poor one (Florida Atlantic).

RE: ODU move to the AAC?
I would seriously doubt the A-10 would want four teams from the state of Virginia. Although this is a very exciting thread for the off season, a whole bunch of dominos have to fall before we even contemplate going to the AAC. But it is fun to think about. I wonder would the AAC require more than a 25K seat stadium?

The A10 is indeed a step up in competition but the conference isn't going to baby sit you.

I'd like to think ODU isn't George Mason. I would instead like to compare ourselves to VCU which is taking full advantage of it's move.

Yes, ODU can improve its basketball in CUSA then see their RPI plummet after entering conference play. Not gonna happen in the A10.

No comparison. The A10 improves ODU basketball period.

If building a new basketball training facility next to a gem of an arena isn't committing resources to basketball, I don't know what is.

ODU routinely beats top A10 members.

There are 6 A10 members with FCS football.

CUSA isn't going to get stronger. It will remain stagnant.

CAA football is separate from their olympic sports wing. I think we would get an invitation. The only ones that may still hold a grudge is JMU and the departed commissioner.

Realignment is around the corner.

ODU FB going independent or FCS is a dumb idea and will make the ODU administration look like they don't have a clue as to what they're doing. A-10 is a no go.

Basketball is ODU's marquee sport.

We're getting a stadium, extended weight room and a basketball training facility. ODU is focusing on both.

I agree that football should have the resources needed to compete. That's why I advocate the removal of wrestling from the athletic budget. I don't think I'm alone here.

Basketball is no longer the marquee sport. That angers many of you old timers. I get it. But football is where our future lies now. Time to jump on the train or stand at the station. Besides, if basketball is our best sport, we might as well give up on athletics altogether...
