Question RE: 2016 MLB Draft Thread
The Atlanta Braves will pick three times over the first 44 selections of the 2016 MLB Draft.

Atlanta’s Picks

Right now, the Braves first five pick slots are: 3, 40, 44, 80, and 109. That’s the first 4 rounds.

Pick #3 cannot change
Pick 40 could change, moving lower if one of the following things happen:
A team with a protected pick takes one of the QO players
A team having already lost their 1st round pick takes one of the QO players
Pick 44 could change, moving lower for the same reasons as #40, except if the Phillies or Reds are a signing team.

Thus it’s mathematically possible for picks 40 and 44 to drop up to 4 additional positions. But this could happen since teams that have already lost a 1st round pick might opt to “double down” (like the Cubs and Tigers already have done) since the loss of another draft pick is technically not as severe a penalty.

Likewise, the Braves third and fourth round picks (80 and 109) could trend lower, though it is more likely for them to stay in the same positions… unless Detroit and the Cubs go nuts and keep signing QO guys, which is highly unlikely.

I love the Dodgers' approach to free agents. Give nearly everybody a qualifying offer, don't overpay, and collect draft picks when they sign elsewhere.

Well, they have the money to do that, not every team does. But I agree with you, Brooks.

Question RE: 2016 MLB Draft Thread
and here's a link to the mlb.com Top 100 since that list is harder to post here:

http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2016?list=draft

for BrooksOwl and myself, we're proud of this one, though we hope he can stay one more year:

[Image: 160226_Baseball_Minute_Maid_vs_Arkansas_...8zkpw5.jpg]
Jon Duplantier | Rank: 43
School: Rice Year: RS Sophomore Position: RHP Age: 21 DOB: 7/11/1994 Bats: L Throws: R Height: 6'4" Weight: 225 lb.
Previously Drafted: Never
Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 50

Duplantier was a potential second-round pick last year as a sophomore-eligible at Rice but went unpicked after a shoulder injury sidelined him for the entire season. He didn't require surgery and has bounced back so well this spring that he's a likely second-rounder and figures to be the first college choice from the state of Texas.

Duplantier has regained his 91-96 mph fastball and maintains it deep into games. His heater is tough not only because of its velocity, but also because his extension in the front of his delivery makes it appear faster and it features run and sink. His power curveball can be a plus pitch when he stays on top of it but gets slurvy at times, and he has aptitude for throwing a sinking changeup.

Though Duplantier has an athletic, physical frame that should lend itself to starting, there are questions about his long-term durability because of his shoulder issues and the track record of top Owls pitching prospects getting hurt. His layoff didn't help his control and command, but he has a sound delivery and they should be at least average in the long run.

Totally agree on the first thing, but do you think there is any reasonable chance he stays? The only reason I can think of involves a monstrous drop in draft position and I do NOT want to go there...

Probably not. It's hard rooting for the player's future when you also want your college team to do really well. But a good problem to have, I suppose.

Would be nice if Duplantier had a solid long majors career to counter the slight dig in the article. Most of those injuries happened after those pitchers were in the majors/minors and had little or nothing to do with their respective college careers, according to the very players themselves..
