They couldn't put it down when it was at arguably its weakest point, the administration saw first hand what an unsteady commitment to your programs can do to the brand and charitable efforts, and the rational people already understood that UAB doing well doesn't take anything from Alabama.

When we eventually net the kind of success that would mean taking the next step, I can't really see any efforts to sabotage. If anything, they'd probably be trying to get in front of it to take credit for the transformation.

Our fight isn't over. The boob-fondling boob in the governor's chair has distracted at least one of the worst Trustees, but Watts remains in office and we harpooned his ego like the Great Bloated Pumpkin that it is. Bryant is "gone" but still has multiple Trustees on his payroll. They gave the "mastermind" of their side of the fight a $360K Vice Chancellor's paycheck, keeping him ready for the next round.

And there's going to be a next round. It may not involve football next time, but they were humiliated by a bunch of loudmouth message board fans, enraged ponytails and band geeks. They are angry, and still control every lever of power that was in their grasp on the morning of December 2nd.

As the Alabama public education SETF "pie" continues to remain a shrunken visage of its former (2008) size (according to Sen. Jabo Waggoner's statement it will STILL be $500 million less in 2017 than it was in 2008) one can expect a greater effort to hold onto whatever the Tuscaloosa campus considers its own.

At one rime, they tried to hold onto ALL graduate programs, limiting UAB and UAH to a few undergrad programs. The football program fiasco of 2014 was just the most visible attempt at holding UAB "in its place". Just as we see people in poor areas fight over tablescraps for sustenance, we may see the same among the state's public colleges every budgetary year in Montgomery.

Don't ever forget that the system BOT makes the decision on how to divide what comes to the system from Montgomery.

Here's what they fear:

http://www.macleans.ca/culture/books/thi...rain-belt/

Across the US and Canada, old industrial cities are remaking themselves as high-tech centers, so successfully that European and Asian leaders are whining about "American competition" for the first time in decades.

The connecting thread of these successes? They're all built around a first-rate university. This is the path to Birmingham's future, with the glorious rebuilding of football as a symbol of this change, and this is the path that the Del Marshes and Joe Espys and Finis St. John IV's are desperate to derail. Because assuring the failure of your enemies is even more important than your own success.

Fire Ray Watts.

I heard this on NPR this morning and it's absolutely true. If you look around at the hot cities in America, the culture is a common theme. Sadly, it's thwarted more than embraced in Birmingham.

That's why it's even more amazing the progress Birmingham continues to make in spite of powerful figures in the state opposing it.

It's not just the people outside of Birmingham. If Birmingham had leadership that cared about anything but making a buck for themselves, Birmingham would be the hottest new place to move in the South.

Also speaks to how powerful an engine a first-rate university can be. With unified city/county government, #FreeUAB, an actual leader instead of FRW and benign neglect from Goat Hill instead of active opposition, this city could actually be a world leader in culture, science and technology.

We can have those things. And a monorail.

Alabama's efforts to hobble B'ham are a century plus old. From 1901 to almost 1970, the state legislature refused to reapportion based on census data until forced by federal courts. We had one of 35 state senators (7 after 1968) and only 7 of 104 representatives (20 after 1968). By the time city / county representation was rectified, the split between urban and suburban within the county's delegation had reared it head as cities like Hoover came into their own.

B'ham is growing as a city and its government is evolving. It is important to remember that only a generation ago most of the city's present population could not vote, much less hold government office. Even our American "Founding Fathers" were not able to get our national government right and working smoothly immediately in the early years (they even had to write a new constitution).

With the help of UAB and the present migration INTO the city, things will get better. What took decades to tear down can't be expected to be rebuilt in a relatively few years. The state seems to be in no hurry to help its largest urban areas to prosper and grow.
