Awesome, great to be the first college team there. Really cool in light of the "Brains in a Bar" lecture that Prof. Shimizu did at Willy's Pub a month ago regarding the role of baseball in US foreign relations, especially with Japan and Caribbean nations.

The Houston Chronicle has a longer story on this, written by Joesph Duarte. It has more context/background but no additional game/opponent details.

That is really cool. My church just coordinated a mission trip to Cuba with 7 baseball outreaches.

It would really be cool if the university or the AD was organizing a group of alums and students to go along with the team.
I'd be very interested in that

If we could somehow end up with the 17 year old versions of Yoenis Cespedes and Aroldis Chapman as commits I would say the trip will be well worth it.

Some cuban cigars would sweeten the deal as well.

A quick google confirms my memory that the have been other collage baseball "cultural exchange" trips to Cuba.
Still cool however. Sorry it will be over Thanksgiving. I understand why that would work for the team but I think that will be a non-starter for my spouse!

Indeed. Thanks for the tip. It seems there have been several few college baseball exchanges to Cuba:

University of Southern California in January 2004: http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/co...cuba_x.htm

http://www.usctrojans.com/sports/m-baseb...03aaa.html

USC article Wrote:The five-day trip from Jan. 23-28 will feature three games against Cuba's No. 1 national all-star team. It will be the first time the Cuban National Team has faced a U.S. collegiate team. Previously, the Cuban National Team has played against the U.S. Olympic Team and the Baltimore Orioles. Former Trojan head coach Rod Dedeaux will also be part of the entourage.

Penn State in November 2015: http://www.gopsusports.com/sports/m-base...appref=std

Penn State article Wrote:Other U.S. baseball teams at the college and professional level have played in Cuba since the Communist regime took power on the Caribbean island more than 50 years ago, but Penn State is the first to compete in Cuba since the restoration of diplomatic ties earlier this year.

University of Richmond in December 2015: http://www.richmondspiders.com/ViewArtic...=210599587

Non D-I exchanges include:

D-II Grand Valley State (Michigan) in January 2012: http://www.sbujdrive.com/2012/01/michiga...s-in-cuba/

D-II University of Tampa in January 2014: http://www.tampabay.com/news/education/c...ba/2161806

High school California Warriors in early 2013: http://firstbasefoundation.org/californi...l-to-cuba/

USA Baseball (comprised of college players) competed in Cuba in July 2012: http://cubapeopletopeople.blogspot.com/2...chive.html (scroll down ~halfway)

Quote:Little League exchanges between the countries are common, and in 1999 the Baltimore Orioles became the first major league team to play in Cuba since the 1959 Cuban Revolution. Now, the Cuba-college agreement re-establishes what was an annual series between 1987 and 1996.
...
The last time Cuba and USA Baseball played was 1996, a particularly bad year for relations. On Feb. 24 of that year, the Cuban Air Force shot down two Cessna planes piloted by an anti-Castro exile group that Havana accused of entering Cuba's airspace to drop leaflets on the island. Later that year, President Clinton signed the Helms-Burton Act, toughening the U.S. trade embargo against Cuba.

USA Baseball said in a statement that Cuba would bring its national college team to the U.S. in summer 2013. U.S. college players last visited the island in 1993.

I think it would be more exciting to do something in Japan instead of Cuba but I guess economics played a part in this.
