EMU Regents say: We're not eliminating football, we're not leaving the MAC
Letter signed by EMU's president and Board of Regents, posted on athletic department's website.

http://emueagles.com/news/2016/4/26/gene...orter.aspx

Quote:In the past several days, there has been considerable media coverage of reports that indicate that Eastern Michigan University is considering eliminating football, or reducing support for football by dropping down to a lower division of the NCAA and by dropping out of the Mid-American Conference. These reports are not based on any solid factual information. We have absolutely no plans to eliminate football or move into any other division or conference.

They actually might be more competitive in a lower division.

In other words, if the current football coach, who is in his 3rd year, does not turn things around soon, let's say by his 4th year, then it's time to pull the plug on the football program.

Now they done it! Now it's in writing, they will drop football.

RE: EMU Regents say: We're not eliminating football, we're not leaving the MAC
They're just kicking the can down the road. It's not a bad idea to, really. Who know what the state of the game, and the NCAA will be in a decade. It may turn out something happens and most of the MAC is plagued by something the major conferences, schools, and the NCAA does; is it better for EMU to stand with its mates to see it through for a bit longer, or cut it and take their chances?

As much as football is a revenue-killer to entire departments, not having one doesn't make for comfort, either. And, honestly, what is EMU's alternative if they drop to FCS or drop the sport altogether? Horizon and Summit? Eastern outpost for the MVC? None of those places are exactly populated with happy residents...

RE: EMU Regents say: We're not eliminating football, we're not leaving the MAC
The EMU professor and student government don't understand the situation based on their comments.

- Drop to FCS or D2? It would cost more because the little saved in scholarship costs is out-weighed by loss of revenue by CFP money, guaranteed games, and TV money

- He says he just wants to drop football only. What? Once those 85 men's scholarships are gone, 85 women's scholarships would also be cut from Title IX requirments? Thats half the women's sports. You can't just cut men's football scholarships without balancing it out I don't think. I dunno, maybe you can. Anybody know for sure?

- He mentions the students don't want to pay the $900 athletics fee, but fails to mention that only $200 of it is for football. He is OK with $700 student fee? If he thinks football's $200 bang for the buck isn't worth it (which actually gets the university attention), how does he feel about an invisible track and field's $73 student fee? What does EMU get out of track and field charging each student $73?

.

But then what would be the point? Their growing competitiveness in the last few years brings them to the point of hoping to go to the Big Dance in March. Drop down to D2 or D3, and then who cares how well their BBall team does?

I don't think any school in the country has a balance. They are all working on it and they are all at risk for a lawsuit. Dropping 85 men's scholarships gives them a chance to drop a women's sport or two, but not 85 scholarships. FBS requires more sports than merely being in Division I. They can get to the minimum and focus more on basketball and the remaining sports.

They lose and nobody goes to their games. There's no reason to continue football.

If the reason for dropping football is because nobody goes to the game and it loses money, then there are track and field, rowing, swimming, and field hockey teams all over the country that need to be cut. Not sure many would be upset if EMU drops out, just saying I dont understand while football is always targeted when other sports are also very expensive and get less attention and everybody gives them a pass. You think its cheap flying a swimming ans diving team all over the AAC from the NE to Texas for the 10 people in attendance, no TV, and not a mention in the news?

The artjcle mentions losing $52 million over two years but fails to mention that EMU football only accounted for about 10% of those losses but is singled out to be cut. What about the other $45 million spent on sports that brings them no national recognition at all?

That's the point. Look at the difference between EMU's current athletic budget and the athletic budgets of nearby D-I schools without football, like Horizon League schools.

EMU's athletic budget is about $34 million/year per the USA Today database. The median Horizon member's athletic budget is about $14 million/year. The difference between EMU being an FBS program with an essentially invisible football team and being a D-I program with no football team is $20 million/year. They're spending $20 million/year of their students' money just to call themselves "FBS" instead of "Division I".

Most of the math used to justify FBS is shakey.

Let's consider the difference in 85 scholarship FBS football players vs. Division II football. I don't want to look up EMU costs so let's say a full ride is $18,000 a year and $2,000 in COA for $20,000.

If EMU has a roster of 105 which is the max, the scholarship and COA cost will be $1.7 million. Tuition and fees from walk-ons will produce $360,000.

In Division II assuming a roster of 80. Maximum of 36 full rides divided with no COA. Cost $648,000. Tuition and fees received $792,000. The partial ride and walk on players essentially subsidize the scholarships with over $140,000 left over.

Salary costs will fall with a small staff and salaries can be significantly lower easily offsetting much of the FBS revenue.

If EMU football went to the Pioneer League in football. Scholarships charged to athletics $0, assuming a roster of 70, tuition and fees paid to the school $1.26 million. Again a smaller staff (FCS permits one fewer coach) and lower salaries for the staff hired.

EMU currently sponsors 21 sports, with football non-scholarship in FCS, EMU could drop down to as few as 14 sports. In Division II could drop as low as 10 sports.

When you see articles saying conference X members received $$$ in revenue, that's generally BS as well unless based on the actual distribution to the schools minus the dues paid to the conference. Who cares if you get $3 million in conference distribution in Conference X if the dues are $1.5 million and Conference Y distributes $2 million and assesses dues of $500,000 the net is the same but the cost of operation of the league is rarely factored in.

Even if the net ended up the same any change means EMU is no longer the butt of the "doesn't belong" conversation, no more articles detailing the cost of being FBS and no more why won't the NCAA stop the attendance sham.

There isn't a need for EMU to drop to D2. They are pretty solid in other sports except for football. They can still stay D1 and focus on basketball if they drop football.

Yes, but they have several options available. Maybe not the most sexy conferences, but a few that wouldn't mind EMU being in there.

They'd have to find another conference, probably.

Yes, but they have several options available. Maybe not the most sexy conferences, but a few that wouldn't mind EMU being in there.

If they could get in the MVC, it would be an upgrade for basketball. With the Horizon, its not much different.

I'm not sure that 850 per game attendance is going to attract an MVC invite if they left the MAC.

Well, with Idaho's expected announcement to drop down to FCS, will that ease EMU's decision? If not this year, perhaps next year?

Hey, if they're willing to pay millions of dollars to keep the program, let 'em. I'm sure the MAC schools don't mind an easy win on the schedule each year.
