For bourbons, I have to agree with the Eagle Rare recommendation. Great stuff!

Funny, even living in Kentucky this stuff is extremely hard to come by. You really have to be in the know when it's available. Expensive and sells out in minutes.

I got my hands on the 20 and 23-year-old Pappys at the bar in the Marriott in downtown Louisville. The 20-year-old was the best bourbon I've had, hands down. The perfect balance of spice, heat and smoothness. The 23-year-old, well, I'm glad I can say I tried it because I may never get the chance to do it again, but I found myself thinking it was too woody, like maybe it had spent too much time in the barrel. A couple drops of water did help negate some of the overt woodiness, but honestly, I'd take the 20 over the 23 (especially if spending my own cash).

I stick with single malts and the top of my list: Laphroaig, Oban, Balvanie.

There is a cigar bar (Casa Fuente) in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace which has a great selection of single malts. They have a special "black list" which has some of the rarest scotch available. Highest price was $1,100 for one drink of 50 year old Macallan.

I'M probably going over to the Huber farm's winery about 20 miles NW of downtown Louisville in a few weeks. They also now feature a distillery and are the only place Outside of Kentucky that can make and sell a Bourbon. Currently "Carl T ". Seems They must get Water or something from Kentucky to be licenced for the Bourbon name. Friends that have tried it said it is pretty good. I know the winery is a great place to visit on weekends in Starlight, Ind.

I think you mean that no one but Kentucky can make a whiskey that can be called "Kentucky Straight Bourbon". The above is a distillery that makes bourbon in Columbus OH and I believe the Bulleit distillery is in Indiana.

I think in Kentucky they would say real bourbon can only be made in Kentucky and it has something to do with the lime in the soil. But I do not really know if this is so myself. I have always gone along with this statement as a creed of some sorts.

I believe a whiskey is a bourbon if it has 1) at least 51% of the mash being corn, 2) the barrels are new and made from American white oak, 3) the barrels must have some char and 4) the whiskey must be aged at least 2 years.

I scouted the liquor section at our grocery store last night, and I have a few targets in mind for the next week. There is ER 10 yr bourbon, Wild Turkey Rare Breed and Wild Turkey 101 as next candidates for consideration. There are also the upper quality Bushmills and Jameson's whiskeys available too, but I'm committing to trying another bourbon. Out of the 3, which one do you recommend? My thoughts are:

• ER may be the next because it should be the more refined version of the Buffalo Trace that I bought the other week.
• Maybe I should go in a different direction from Buffalo Trace distillery and come back to them later. Heard great things about Wild Turkey Rare Breed, but then there is the old classic 101 out there too.
• Also heard great things about Bulleit Rye, so maybe step outside bourbons this next go around
• Other good ones out there and available are the Four Roses single barrel and Basil Hayden's too.
• Woodford Reserve and Makers are always there too.
  

Seems like an embarrassment of riches to consider right now. Right now, and based on how much I want to spend, I'm probably circling back to Wild Turkey or the Eagle Rare for now.

I'm not sure if anyone here also enjoys tequila, but I'm enjoying a finger of the Corralejo Reposado Tequila this evening. It's very smooth and quite easy to drink neat without any of the typical aids needed to drink tequila. For the cost, this tequila is just as good as the more expensive Patron or Don Julio IMHO.

Snarky puns aside, I have never been one for tequila. I know I'm supposed to be savoring the agave, but I find it muddled by the aroma and some deep-seeded dislike for the aftertaste. Simple incompatibility, perhaps. Had a rough intro with 1800 and then tried to work my way in with a tequila-tinted Brazilian rum called Leblon. No go for me.

I prefer Gin over tequila, and just about every liquor.
