RE: OT - Favorite Whiskey
Everyone's taste is so different it's impossible to suggest a whiskey or a bourbon, but I will anyway.

For a varied approach, here are some affordable starters

*George Dickel Superior #12 - great entry level Tennessee whiskey. And you can say you're drinking a "tickle of Dickel"
*Jim Beam Rye - sweet, easy drinking. Surprise your friends with something not typical.
*Cutty Sark - classic blended scotch whisky. Can't go wrong and a great intro to smokey scotches.
*Knob Creek - perfect starter bourbon. The Camry of bourbons in a good way.

When you are ready to commit to single malt:

*Springbank Green - my go to single malt.
*Benraich 15 - aged in American bourbon barrels, then finished in Spanish sherry barrels.

To commemorate the birth of your first born

*Johnny Walker Blue. If you are at the bar and see that a glass of this is available to purchase, GET IT! It'll be somewhere between $35 and $50 for a finger but it is worth every penny. Cut it with just a small amount of water.

All on the rocks. With Jack Single Barrel, you may want to take your time, even more than usual.

The bad thing about Jack Single Barrel is taking a shot of that, then following it up with a shot of regular Jack, which at that point tastes like Aristocrat.

Ha, yeah, you have to stay with one or the other. No going back and forth.

Jim Beam Rye is one of the best whiskeys for the price that I have had. In terms of Bourbon, Lexington is good stuff for the price. That tends to be the trend for me. I haven't worked my way up to the pricier choices yet.

I bought a bourbon tonight. I'm not used to drinking bourbon, but I thought this was nice. Drank it on the rocks - specifically 2 small cubes.

Next month i think I'm going to try a bottle of this:

I've got 2 of those Buffalo Trace at home. Great stuff for the price as well as a very cool looking bottle.

RE: OT - Favorite Whiskey
I've always been suspicious of flavored whiskeys. I had Jim Beam Red Stag about a year ago and it tasted like high-proof cough medicine from cap to dregs. Haven't bothered with any others. Crown Royal makes their stuff sound like the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I will not spend the money to try. I normally drink whiskey neat, so maybe my technique is what is stopping me from enjoying such things.

I read somewhere on the internet that Fireball is just cinnamon schnapps repackaged as a whiskey.

I did my fair share of Fireball in college. That would not surprise me at all.

I like dickel. Fireball is ingenious. Some crap whiskey flavored with cinnamon. Brilliant

I was strongly tempted to buy the dickel #12, but at the last minute decided to veer towards the bourbons. Based on the research I've done so far, I know the dickel whiskeys use a lot of corn in the mash (84%+???) vs what I think is typical of a bourbon, so I'd be curious if anyone can compare/contrast dickel #12 (or #8) vs a typical bourbon like Buffalo Trace and Woodford Reserve, etc.

RE: OT - Favorite Whiskey
So, not having a good background in bourbons yet, I do like the Buffalo Trace so far. I've been drinking it a couple times so far at night in an old fashioned glass. If i want to, I could use one of my wine sampling glasses as a very good fill in for one of those whiskey tasting glasses. Maybe it would be worth a try for the fun of it. I know that my palate is not fully refined yet wrt to bourbons, so I can get those caramel, honey and toffee notes towards the front along with the oak/smoke taste at the back of the tongue. But all those other tasting notes I miss. I MIGHT be able to detect the cacao, but honestly it's a guess at best. Seems smooth to me. I drink it with one or 2 ice cubes.

At our grocery store, I saw a 12 year old Elijah Craig for about $26 (750 ml bottle). I'm thinking that may be the next bourbon I may want to try.

EC 12 is a very good Bourbon. My wife and I chose it when compared to 4 others at Lucky's Market against 4 roses among others in same price range.

Thank you someone finally mentioned Eagle Rare and Basil Hayden's. Naturally it was a Kentuckian. 04-cheers My personal favorite is Basil Hayden's. Buffalo Trace is relatively inexpensive (at least where I buy it) but possibly the best at its price point. Woodford is also quality.

Has anyone tried the W.L. Weller brand of whiskey offered by the BT Distillery? Sounds like it would compare similarly to Makers Mark based on the description.

Now that you have a whiskey and a bourbon, make yourself an Old Fashioned.
