RE: OT - Favorite Whiskey
For bourbon I like to go with Woodford Reserve if I'm up for paying for it.
The cheaper bourbons I am partial to are Buffalo Trace and Four Roses.
For non bourbon whisky I tend to get Jameson or Johnny Walker.

I get those too as well as some single malt scotches. The most common whiskey purchase I make is Johnny Walker Black label, then a single malt and then an Irish Whiskey like Jameson. I know Jameson is not the most flavorful drink out there but it's solid - and smooth.

Since it looks like your in Huntsville now, you should go up to Lynchburg and tour the distillery. Really cool place.

I will have to do that some time. I have always wanted to go but have never gotten around to it.

What I really want, but am not silly enough to pay for, is and entire barrel. I want it mostly for the barrel, and partly for the whiskey, but $5,000 is a bit ludicrous for something I'm certainly not going to consume and a cool item I will almost certainly have to keep in a garage. Still, buying a whole barrel is pretty damn cool.

I saw somebody mention Angel's Envy earlier. My brother-in-law is obsessed with that. Personally, I am not a fan because I do not like the sweetness. I have to send it over to Africa a few times every quarter for him.

While I was weened on Mr. Daniels, I have come to adopt Makers as my whisky (Bourbon) of choice.

I'm looking to try something new and haven't explored much in the area of bourbon or tennessee style whiskey. I was thinking about trying a bottle of Knob Creek straight bourbon, Bulleit bourbon or George Dickel #12. My whiskey experience is mostly in the realm of scotch, irish and canadian blends.

Anyone have a preference amongst those or other brands? I've been batting the idea of the Bulleit Rye whiskey too, but thinking it would be best to stick to bourbon before venturing into a rye whiskey.

Bulleit is wonderful. It has a smooth, buttery flavor with a hint of sweetness. Can't beat the price, either. I also like Maker's Mark. I get a hint of vanilla or caramel from that one. Both fine choices.

Knob Creek is pretty good, as is Woodford Reserve.

I can't do anything that has even a hint of sweetness in it (even extends to beer). For some reason sweet tasting booze has always turned my stomach.

Sounds like Irish Whiskey is in your wheelhouse then. Scotch too, but it's generally pricier if you want single malt.

I really don't drink a ton of hard liquor, but it's usually JD or Irish whiskey when I do. I'm more a craft beer guy.

Yup, pretty much. I used to be a Woodford Guy, but I have turned more to Makers. Since I drink it simply on the rocks, Makers has a better flavor. Woodford is smoother though. Makers is easier on the wallet ($45-$48 per 1.75 compared to $65 or so for Woodford).

If you need something a little cheaper, Old Forester is about $33-$35 for a 1.75. If you need to go really cheap Evan Williams or Very Old Barton ($22 per 1.75) is the way to go.

Gentlemen Jack is excellent for egg nog.

If you have money to burn, Pappy Van Winkle cannot be beat. But it is pricey and hard to find. And I drink too much bourbon to spend that kind of money on each bottle. 03-shhhh

I'm not into beer at all. It doesn't settle well with my stomach. I much prefer wine or liquor.

I've never cared all that much for wine. My wife is the wine nerd in the family and she was in a constant state of almost passing out from out from excitement when we were in France. I've just never gotten the appeal. I'll take a good beer followed by a nice glass of whiskey any day.

1. Jack Single Barrel (THAT isn't watered down, 130 proof, lol)

2. Maker's Mark

3. Wild Turkey

All on the rocks. With Jack Single Barrel, you may want to take your time, even more than usual.

It's hard to go wrong with Mr. Daniels' whiskey.

For my budget, it's often whatever's on sale (that doesn't taste like it's already been through my kidneys!)

Cheaper stuff - Elijah Craig - fine by me

Medium priced - Woodford or Maker's

A little higher priced - Blanton's

Knock your damn sox off - Booker's

All on the rocks

And JD doth not equal a bourbon

The bad thing about Jack Single Barrel is taking a shot of that, then following it up with a shot of regular Jack, which at that point tastes like Aristocrat.
