Shh... Don't tell Dukeman we got a 3 star recruit from our former peers who left us behind without COA helping us either. There's no way such a thing is possible.

RE: 2017 FB Recruiting
Watched his highlight tape. First minute is home run length TDs, which don't tell me much about a player. The rest of the tape (~1:30 and on) shows a runner who has good balance, keeps his feet moving, and can even throw in a few blocks if needed. His HS looked like it ran a shotgun triple option style offense. He didn't look afraid of contact, but seemed to shy away from it a few times. Did not see a lot of shiftiness, he looks more like a north-south runner, with the ability to juke when he needs. Read blocks well. I like the pick up, and he seemed committed to us because we were interested in him very early on. Also like the fact that he chose us over a school like Texas State. Maybe the grass isn't quite so green?

Do you really want to line up the list of the optioned players we get against the list of optioned players that we don't get because of fbs/coa?

I think we both know which list would be longer.

We just got a WR transfer from Ohio U. Robbie Walker, 5'9 180 pounds. He was a three star recruit from Reston Va. Ranked as the #8 player in the Washington DC area by ESPN.com, 247Sports.com and Rivals.com.

For all you doubters, this coaching staff is going to win some recruiting battles against G5 schools. FBS is not the holy grail for all football players. Good FBS teams have an advantage especially if they are P5. G5 is not for every recruit. I know because I was with two this weekend and they told me they would rather play at a FCS school that can win championships then a G5 school who is average and goes to a bowl game in Detroit.

I agree, I'm impressed with our staff and have no doubt they will continue to recruit well at the FCS level. Sometimes a recruit is realistic in their abilities and realize they can play 3-4 years at the FCS level where they may not at the higher FBS level. Some are also happy with winning any kind of championship, no matter if it's FCS, division 2 or 3.

5 and 6 win seasons and still no big boy wins will have recruits look at your program a little more realistically.

I bet your 2 examples do not have many solid fbs offers. If they do, then I would be willing to bet they are a small minority of athletes who would forego fbs for fcs; though there is not way to measure this. While G5 is not for every recruit, the vast majority who get solid G5 offers will go that way. Now with COA on the table- you do the math. I also know some kids who have played at JMU and other schools who got "recruited" by some P5 and G5 schools, but when it came down to LOI time that "recruiting" did not equal scholarship offers.

RE: 2017 FB Recruiting
Sure in some cases I'm sure the calculators come out and the note pad and the COA is put in black and white but I find it hard to believe in every case this is a deciding factor.

Keep in mind that these kids are getting a free ride/scholarship and the meetings are often with their parents. If coaches are good recruiters and show data/stats to show graduation rates, college ratings, jobs post college, etc. and one Institution (JMU) is superior let's say to another (ODU) do you think a majority of parents and kids for that matter are going to chose the inferior school for a little extra spending money- the short term at the expense of the long term?

I'm sorry I still don't buy that- college athletics is about at least the appearance of student athletes especially at the mid major level- whether a parent or a kid values the COA or not I think I think the majority want to believe they are choosing the scholarship offer from the school that is the best fit and academics factors in at some level- otherwise there will be a lot of shame out there.

RE: 2017 FB Recruiting
Most of the AAC and Mountain West have the basic ingredients for a big time feel, even if they are classified as G5. They usually have been playing football for 100+ years and have an established alumni/booster base. Their facilities are pretty good. They draw decent crowds and do get some P5 teams to play at their stadiums. The latter likely is due to history if nothing else. Beating out them for a player would be something to crow about.

Now the rest of the G5 generally has warts. We can match or beat them for stadium/ facilities, game day experience and attendance. We might not have the history of all of these programs (which stretches into alumni/booster base), but recruits don't see that. Most play two P5 teams on the road. We usually play one too. We can compete for an FCS championship. Most of the "lesser 3" of the G5 is shooting for the Carmelia Bowl in Montgomery. Not sure how much that excites young recruits.

There's a lot of crossover in low end FBS and high end FCS. We'll still deal with that even if we do move up. I like recruiting stars as much as the next guy, but my barometer before seeing these guys on the field is "Who else is recruiting them".
