Baseball Midweek: vs. # 23 ECU (CANCELLED); @ High Point
The Seahawks host the Pirates, ranked # 23 by D1baseball.com, tonight at 6 PM, coming off their 7-game road swing. Back on March 29th, ECU took the first half of the season series, 9-6, in Greenville.

They'll follow that up with a road trip to High Point tomorrow night at 6 PM.

Both opponents have passed the 20-win mark and are in the Top 100 of the RPI. Thus they represent 2 big opportunities to get back into the discussion for a Regional at large bid.

Both of these are winnable games, and as you stated... necessary for us to be in the discussion for an at-large.

Go Seahawks!!!

Diamond Hawks Host East Carolina Tuesday

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The Seahawks return to Brooks Field for the first time in two weeks tonight when they host East Carolina at 6 p.m.

UNCW (19-9) carries a four-game winning streak into tonight's non-conference game after sweeping Colonial Athletic Association rival William & Mary over the weekend in Williamsburg.

Helping lead UNCW to the sweep and a 4-0 record, including a win at Campbell, last week was senior outfielder Steven Linkous, who was named CAA Co-Player-of-the-Week. Linkous hit .526, scored four runs and knocked in three while stealing two bases. In the series opener against the Tribe, Linkous plated the eventual game-winner with a two-out RBI single.

East Carolina (21-11) dropped two-of-three at Tulane in an American Athletic Conference over the weekend. The Pirates prevented a sweep at the hands of the Green Wave with a 7-3 win in the finale as Parker Lamm collected four hits and drove in three runs.

The Seahawks hit the road tomorrow when they renew a series with High Point. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

5 THINGS TO KNOW

1. The Pirates held off a Seahawk rally over the final three innings for a 9-6 win earlier this season in Greenville
2. UNCW owns a 15-2 record at Brooks Field with wins over St. John's and nationally-ranked NC State
3. East Carolina Head Coach Cliff Godwin was an assistant on UNCW's 2004 club and helped the Seahawks to their first CAA championship
4. ECU leads the all-time series, 71-59, but the Seahawks own a 37-29 record in the series at Brooks Field
5. The series began in 1965

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Dwanya Williams-Sutton leads the lineup with a .388 average while Parker Lamm checks in at .352 … Eric Tyler has a team-high four home runs and 26 RBI's while Travis Watkins has 10 doubles to his credit … Starter Nick Durazo will be making his third start of the season and has no record … Closer Joe Ingle has seven saves on the season

Seahawks, Panthers Meet For First Time Since 2003

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW returns to the road Wednesday for a 6 p.m. start at High Point before returning to Brooks Field this weekend.

The Seahawks, winners of their last four, had their game with East Carolina canceled on Tuesday as rain made its way through the city of Wilmington. The game will not be made up.

Sophomore Justin Crump will make the start tonight for the Seahawks (19-9) while the Panthers (22-10) counter with freshman Cooper Jeffers.

High Point has carved out a 16-5 record at home this season and is coming off a series win over visiting Longwood in Big South Conference play last weekend.

The Seahawks open a seven-game homestand with a 6 p.m. start on Friday against East Tennessee State.

5 THINGS TO KNOW

1. The game played in the series was in 2003 and the Seahawks roughed up HPU, 21-2
2. UNCW owns a 21-10 lead in the all-time series which began in 1965
3. UNCW and High Point played 17 innings in a NAIA playoff game in 1967 and the Seahawks won, 1-0 … UNCW pitcher Chuck Cuppett went the distance for the complete game
4. High Point moved to Division I in 2000
5. The teams will complete a home-and-home series on April 27

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Chris Clare, the reigning Big South Player-of-the-Week, leads the Panthers with a .365 batting average and 12 doubles … In the power department, Carson Jackson is slugging .472 with seven doubles, three triples and three homers … Austen Zente has stolen 20 bases … Tyler Britton and Joe Goodman have shared the closer duties and have two and three saves, respectively.

Did I just read that a UNCW pitcher threw 17 innings for a 1-0 win?!

That's insane.

I like our chances vs a freshman arm. What's the scouting report on Jeffers?

The game was very different then, haha.

Perfect Game ranked him the # 232 left hander coming out of HS (Orlando, FL kid). Fastball clocked in the mid 80's. Big kid (6-3, 200-205 lbs), comes over the top with a 3/4 arm angle, which is smart. Has some secondary pitches, but not sure what those are. Probably a kid in the "crafty lefty" department.

In his 4 starts (5 appearances total) he's allowed a lot of baserunners. 19 hits and 11 walks in 20.2 innings (1.49 WHIP), which is high. Longest start has been 6 innings, though with his middling velocity he probably will eventually show the ability to go further.

His last outing he got roughed up in Chapel Hill, only getting 1 out against UNC and allowing 5 earned runs on 3 hits (including a triple), 4 walks and no K's. Ouch. Otherwise he has been very effective. 1.34 ERA in his other 4 outings. He recorded wins in each of his first 3 starts of the season against Elon, La Salle, and a very good Wright State squad, and allowed only 1 run total in those 3 starts.

If we can continue the offense we displayed in Williamsburg, I like our chances against a guy that tends to give up a lot of hits.

I do as well. Only thing that gives me pause offensively is our difficulties with lefties. Crump has been solid as our midweek guy, so if runs are at a premium tonight, I still like our chances of picking up the road win.

The Hawks in that era were built to win with good pitching and defense - which was easier to do in the wooden bat era. The pitcher, Chuck Cuppett, was a former Marine who, a couple of years later, helped the Hawk's pitching staff lead the nation in earned run average.

As was previously stated - a very different era.

17 innings is absolute mastery regardless of the era you pitched in. That is a lot of pitches. Not only that, but a frickin shutout. Now I'm interested in the NCAA single game record. Seems like that would be up there.

UNCW with a 5-0 lead in the fifth. Sounds like HPU is on their 3rd pitcher of the night. Must have gotten to Jeffers early.
