The Cubs are atrocious on the road and the Mets have been playing really good baseball. I can't wrap my mind around the Cubs season right now. They should be running away with the division. Instead, they're trailing and IMO, lucky the Mets are cooling off or they'd likely even lose a wildcard spot at this point.
Everything is pointing to an early post season exit for the Cubs and wouldn't surprise me if there are some roster/coaching shakeups in the off season. The last few years following the 2016 championship have been incredibly underwhelming considering the talented roster.
The Cubs are going to end the season leading the NL in errors and outs made on the bases, and they are only one behind for most blown saves. I think those three categories go a long way of explaining why they've been so inconsistent this year. The Central is a competitive division, but they fell short.
Off season should be really interesting. There is a lot of payroll coming off of the books and they're expecting additional revenue from the TV deal. I'd like to see them sign Castellanos and go after another TOR starter. If they accomplish those two things, we then need to sign a veteran presence that can play 2b to give Hoerner a little bit more time.
I'm used to missing the post season, but it hurts worse when you expect to be there. I'm probably not watching much of the playoffs this year.
I've seen some speculation on Theo's future in Chi town. what are your thoughts?
I'd be very surprised if he's not there next year. I'm quite certain they won't offer Maddon another contract and I'm torn there. The FO really handicapped Joe this year with a bad pen. I mention that simply to acknowledge that I don't think Theo is perfect, but I want him in Chicago.

RE: 2016-2019 MLB Thread
Epstein has already publicly stated there's no validity to rumors he's leaving Chicago. There's no need to even discuss that.
Maddon though... that's a discussion.
I think he's done in Chicago, and I wouldn't fault Epstein and Hoyer for that decision. I think it's a safer bet to let him walk after this season than to re-sign him, honestly. At this point, he's fulfilled his contract. He achieved the pinnacle of success and this year was an absolute disaster. If they re-sign him, and the disaster continues... they stand to lose a lot more than letting him walk. With the pieces Chicago currently has, I think they can find another manager that can improve on this season. If not, then that points to a player problem. Like Bricks said, there's a few pieces that need to be addressed, most notably the rotation and bullpen.
I just think there has to be some sort of shakeup after this season. The easiest is Maddon because there's no expectation he'd return next year and you can use that as a leverage tool against the current players to get their heads out of their butts.
Maddon, IMO, is still a good coach. For me though, I never liked his inability to stick with a lineup. Even in the WS championship year he was constantly tinkering with the batting order. Some of his coaching decisions nearly gave that championship away too. I want a coach that will stick with something on a regular basis and allow the players to maintain a bit of comfort in the order. Also, maybe more of a coach and less of a "player's friend".

If you think he tinkers with a lineup, wait until you get a robot manager that just follows what a computer says. Different lineup every single night.

With Maddon officially out, will be interesting to see who Epstein goes with.
Regardless, the message is sent. Missing the playoffs with this caliber team is unacceptable.

I'm not sure he's a legit scapegoat for the horrible pen. Cubs missing the playoffs this year highlights the importance of the pen in today's game IMO

As a Yankees fan I'm glad A's got eliminated, if Tampa somehow beats Houston i'd like their chances against Tampa much more than vs. A's
In other news(Tuesday) what a time for one of the best RP in baseball to crap his pants. Washington is dangerous! That staff is legit

Yeah, I agree with you. It's always more likely that the Rays will fold against the Yankees than the A's would.

A's have historically(this year included) owned the Yankees

I haven't watched one inning of post season baseball, just keeping track of results. Pulling for all the upsets.

Came in relief and pulled, well a Kershaw. gave up 2 bombs for the Nats to tie it. This dude has been historically good in the regular season but over and over he chokes in the post.

That Braves game was brutal. How can one franchise be so good for 6 months and so bad in October on a regular basis
