Charles the Monarch in the pokey
According to the Va. Pilot, Charles was picked up and is being held by animal control until the owner appears next week for a hearing on charges of having a "nuisance animal".

IMHO, it's about time this happened. That irresponsible owner has been letting that dog run free for several years. Despite the novelty of having "Charles the Monarch," it's dangerous to the dog and can be a nuisance for those who encounter it. And it's BS that he keeps his dog on a leash.

I don't disagree with you. The owner was in Richmond and the dog was left outside? Sounds irresponsible to me.

The owner should be the one in jail. I have had to just miss that dog several times in my car while the doggie was running behind his owner who was riding his bike ahead of him. The dog deserves better.

RE: Charles the Monarch in the pokey
last time I was in Norfolk I was heading into Cogans North (43 & Colley) and before I went in Charles came out of no where and came right up to me. I was like "he's gonna get killed out here!" the hostess just laughed at me and said "that dog is safer than most people." then he ran off back down 43rd. that is definitely irresponsible.

RE: Charles the Monarch in the pokey
We saw Charles the Monarch years back when we encountered him on Colley Av at University Pizza. What a great and friendly dog. I think "Charles" stops in for a slice of pizza and a cold drink of "water". I hope this all works out I love seeing him at games and other events. Last year at the Big Blue BBQ he was a rock star. The owner had all the kids around him and they were taking pictures and Charles seemed to love every one old and young. I believe the owner even has a business card he passes out as his representative. I believe he attends these gatherings and takes him to many events for FREE.

FREE Charles from the pokey, no Monarch needs to be caged.

Old Timer, I'm not sure the original Tea Partiers would agree with that sentiment!

I tried taking a selfie with Charles in the silver lot as I was walking into a game and his owner was rude and said no selfies only pictures and pulled him along as I was taking it. Maybe she was overwhelmed that day?

I love Charles the Monarch. On the other hand, his owner doesn't have the best rep as a dog owner around town. I wish better for Charles.

I agree...the owner should be in the pokey! This is his FOURTH offense. It will be a heavy fine. If I were the judge or magistrate I would have the dog removed and open applications for a responsible ODU fan to get custody. I have been fearing the breaking news that Charles was hit by a car or, with his huge fandom, being kidnapped!

ODU should adopt him and let him live like a Monarch while serving as our living mascot.

That's not a bad idea. The Texas A&M mascot is a collie, the current one being Reveille IX. I believe the first Reveille was adopted around 1931. Reveille is cared for by a special "Mascot" company in the Corps of Cadets and is present at all Aggie football games.

If a cadre of handlers could be put together as part of the spirit team, we could see King Charles at all the football games. It would be a lot of work, but could become a fond tradition at ODU with King Charles II ready to go when Chuckie Boy gets too old.

I love this idea. He could even run onto the field with the team.

Would be fantastic if the details could be worked out. Uncage and free Charles and let him live like a King at ODU. Long live the King.

We should AIM HIGH and incorporate a lions habitat outside the new stadium and get a lion like LSU has a tiger.

We should get a few lions and place crowns on them. Maybe turn it into a petting zoo and charge people to pet the lions. THIS will add to our bottom line.

Love the idea of the University taking ownership of Charles. Love the dog, but the owner does not take proper care of him and doesn't deserve to keep him.

Most likely he doesn't see it that way. He probably thinks ' the dog is fed, healthy, and he gives him freedom to run around. I don't think he wants to give him up.

While that is definitely true, he doesn't get to make that decision. The judge will next week. If he goes up for adoption, I hope ODU does something to ensure he maintains his connection with the school.
