Microsoft's AI stumble
In an "experiment", Microsoft created an AI Twitter bot to ostensibly engage millennials. Well, as they say, the best laid plans...

Seems that a coordinated group of Tweeters were able to lead poor Tay astray, who committed more than a few faux pas. Tay has now been given a time-out.

So it's not really AI, but just a parrot that squawks out whatever phrases it picks up from users. That's frightening skynet-like stuff there.

RE: Microsoft's AI stumble
Think of the internet like an ocean. Microsoft plopped their Cleverbot-but-not-Cleverbot named "Tay" down in the first layer, the shallow kiddie pool of the internet. Beachgoers, amateur fishermen and all that. Fairly clear water. Fairly common life forms. /pol/ was like otters or dolphins; fairly intelligent denizens of that first layer, but you can never tell just where their motivations are. /pol/ meets Tay. /pol/ trolls Tay. Not knowing any better, Tay mimics /pol/, starts swimming the way they do and performing the functions they do. Microsoft doesn't catch it until too late, then reels Tay up to the surface on the port side for "maintenance".

Definitely was not worst-case scenario. Embarrassing for Microsoft and an indication of the trolliness of internet anons at large, but no permanent damage to Tay or Microsoft's reputation. Lucky that none of the rare species from the depths made their presence known.
