WBB Game 30: vs Rice (Senior Night and a Scoring title for Simms)
After the LM lost to Rice 68-46, the team had a players meeting because they were not happy. They want vengeance. Fitting that Rice will be the team ODU plays on senior night where emotions are already going to be running on high. Jennie Simms said that she wants “payback”. Rice held her to a season low 9 points. So that “payback” might be the team, for her, or both. Considering Simms has scored 72 points in her past two games,….look out Rice. :-)

One last look at the standings.

1. UTEP 16-2
2. WKU 14-3
3. Middle Tenn St 14-3
4. Charlotte 11-6
5. La Tech 9-8 (vs WKU)
6. ODU 9-8
7. Marshall 8-9 (vs SMU)

Final game of the season. ODU wins, we get a bye in the first week. If La Tech loses, ODU might slide up to the fifth seed. I want to think positive, so I won’t even worry a bout Marshall behind us.

Now we are going to talk about everyone’s favorite subject. Math.
Con USA scoring title.
1. Jennie Simms 17 games 375 points 22.1 ppg
2. Tashia Brown 16 games, 290 points 18.1 ppg.

Okay. Let’s pretend that Simms has the worst game of her career and somehow scores zero points. That will bring down her average to 20.8. WKU’s Brown will have to score 65 points to pass Simms with a 20.9 ppg average. If Simms scores 10 points (still a bad game by her lofty standards) Brown will need 75 points to pass her. If Simms scores 30, Brown will need an incredible 95 points. Forget about it.

Against Charlotte, Lang is coming off a career high 15 rebounds with 6 assists. Rainey had 15 points, 11 boards. The Owls are good with ball movement. They average 14.5 apg, second in con usa. It’s a team with defined roles Lang stays under the basket, Rainey is a guard that can rebound and score. A lady named Gabrielle Stanton comes off the bench for three pointers.

In the end, this is the senor night. And ODU lone senior is LaQuanda Younger. Sadly Q has had to watch this season from the bench due to a back injury. She was KB’s first scholarship offer. And I will remember her game at Duke where she caught fire from the three point line to score 15 points. Because of Q, she kept us in the game. (yes we lost…but it would have been worse without her)

Nobody likes to lose on senior night. And this time, it won’t be ODU.

Nice win to finish the season for the Ladies and to get their revenge. Extra short handed today, as Destinee Young did not play. That left Karen with only 8 available players and the loss of a major rebounder and a big offensive contributor. I guess Jennie should have easily secured the CUSA scoring title with another very strong game. Ije has just been a beast. 2 points from another double double and she was a beast on the boards. She is showing more and more range on her shot.

Big Finish. First the final standings of the regular season...

1. UTEP 16-2
2. Middle Tenn St 15-3
3. WKU 15-3
4. Charlotte 12-6
5. ODU 10-8
6. Marshall 9-9
7. La Tech 9-9.

So Marshall's win and La Tech's loss put them in a tie and Marshall had the tie breaker. ODU moves up one spot in the rankings and La Tech is knocked out of the top six and has to play a first round game. Well done Ladies.

Now....the next time the LM play will be Wednesday March 9th against the winner of the #12 Florida Atlantic/#13 North Texas game. If we win that game, then we play on Thursday against #4 Charlotte, a team that we have beaten twice in the regular season. (5th place might be the better path for us than 6th seed) Both of those games will be carried on the ASN tv network.

Great win for ODU. And it was a team effort. Rice did have 20 loses on the season, but they played much better than a team with 20 loses. That second half was a battle. Rice went up by four, but neither team could build a big lead. It's wasn't until about the 1:56 mark where the game is decided by more than two possession. In a game that close, that is where the fans matter. The home crowd definitely made a difference today.

Ajemba was huge today with 15 boards. Without Young, we needed her. Honestly they are a great pair together down low. They are both ranked in the top five in rebounding in conference only stats. Plus Simms is a good rebounding guard. Assistant coach Trina Patterson has a lot to do with the credit for the rebounding.
