Owls in MLB - 2016
Not too early for this, is it?

Great fangraphs article about Tyler Duffey...

Quote:There’s a really neat thing about the curveball. How many times have I talked about my pitch-comp formula? Using PITCHf/x information, I can calculate similar individual pitches by looking at the average velocities, horizontal movements, and vertical movements. I decided to run pitch comps for curveballs thrown by starting pitchers in 2015. The curveball most similar to Duffey’s, on average: none other than Felix Hernandez‘s curveball.

Brock Holt getting a lot of praise for his role as a super-utility guy...

Quote:Ben Zobrist was the pioneer. But Brock Holt might be the one to push the trend forward for good.

Anthony Rendon seen as a key to Nationals' season...

Quote:Perhaps more than any Washington Nationals player the past two seasons, Rendon has had the biggest impact on his team’s success (or lack thereof).

Good debut for Tony Cingrani...

Quote:Most importantly Cingrani showed he has developed more than the one fastball that he has relied upon for most of his career. He struck out the first two batters he faced on a total of eight pitches. Cingrani threw two nasty inside-and-down cutters to right-handed hitting Carlos Santana and three late-breaking curve balls to the second batter he faced to register those two strikeouts.

Not a lot of pub for Paul Janish yet, but he's 2 for 4 so far in 2 of the Orioles' three games this spring.

Who else is likely to see time in the majors this year?

Aardsma is in the Blue Jays camp this spring, and Lucas Luetge is in the Angels camp. Hopefully both will make it on the big league roster at some point this season.

Rendon gets a mention in a Thomas Boswell column - about cutting back the number of games (for him, Werth, and Zimmerman) to try to keep them healthy. And the instigator of this is Dusty Baker, the purported abuser of pitchers (if I recall past conversations on here - personally, I never followed his teams close enough to know).

J.T. Chargois was just optioned to the Twins' minor league camp but it sounds like he's a candidate for an early season call up.

Quote:Chargois, a right-hander who pitched at Rice with Twins starter Tyler Duffey, regularly hit 96-97 mph on the radar gun in his final outing on Sunday.

Janish singled off of Aardsma in T7 yesterday - great that they are both still competing.

Pretty remarkable: Brock Holt will start in left field over $72-million-man Rusney Castillo

Quote:“This is a guy, his value continues to grow,” Farrell said. “His importance on our team continues to grow with each passing month just because of the versatility. Setting that aside, he’s a good player. There’s the utmost confidence to put him at any one of seven positions on the field and that’s a rarity. Not to mention that his at-bats are consistent. He’s maybe one, if not one of our best, our top two or three baserunners on our club. He’s grown in his own confidence and he’s done one hell of a job.”

I think Brock is making around $600K.

Also a good baserunning move late in the game. Videos of both are here:
