Maybe I was wrong about Rio getting it's act together...
I was wrong in this thread:

http://csnbbs.com/thread-769495.html

http://www.northjersey.com/sports/olympi...-1.1520115

Quote:From the Zika outbreak to severe water pollution, from behind-schedule venues to delayed metro lines, from sluggish ticket sales to cuts in services, from Brazil’s deep financial crisis to impeachment proceedings against its president, the buildup to South America’s first Games faces a long list of concerns.

[...]

Rio is preparing for the Games at a time when Brazil is mired in its worst recession since the 1930s, President Dilma Rousseff is fighting impeachment and the country is dealing with a vast corruption scandal centered on state-controlled oil-and-gas giant Petrobras.

[...]

Other issues facing Rio:

* Delays to the main swimming venue could force a test event scheduled for April 15-20 to be moved to the nearby diving arena.

* Rio’s drug-testing laboratory has until March 18 to meet World Anti-Doping Agency’s guidelines. If it fails, the lab would be declared non-compliant, meaning thousands of doping samples during the Games would have to be sent out of Brazil for testing, raising major logistical and financial challenges.

* Athletes remain concerned about pollution in the waterways that will host Olympic competitions. On Saturday, activists staged a symbolic burial of the Guanabara Bay, the sewage-filled waters where sailing will be held. Last week, the local O Globo daily ran a photo of what appeared to be a severed arm floating in the bay.

* Ticket sales have been disappointing, with only about half of the 4.5 million domestic tickets sold as of early this year.

I couldn't think of many worse places to hold an Olympic Games. From the Zika outbreak to the crime, to the pollution and so many issues, all anyone can think of is like New Orleans or Vegas, Rio is a party spot and that makes up for all of the various issues.

I'm pretty sure:

1. Numerous professional athletes will be present and competing at the games and

2. This forum is the closest match for the subject being discussed.

What about Brazil's World Cup preparation made anyone think their Olympic prep would be any better?

They should have been planning for both by building more than one applicable facility for both events in Rio. Maybe they did and I don't know but yes their World Cup prep left much to be desired and this will leave more.

And it wasn't just the facilities. They had all sorts of infrastructure planned (presumably, part of what got them the bid*) that never got built. It's a shitshow and it was totally predictable.

*Who am I kidding - they got the bid because they had the biggest payoffs.

Which is why you don't host events of this scale in quasi-3rd World countries (Brazil is more like the LA/Inland Empire area than 3rd world but close enough).

The torch has arrived in Brasil.

They'd better be careful it doesn't light Guanabara Bay on fire.

They better hope it doesn't set fire to half the favelas. Geez, they couldn't have held the Olympics in Sao Paulo, Salvador, Belo Horizonte or Brasilia? Rio has the scenery and tourist traps but there are far more places suitable to hold the Olympics.

You're going about this all wrong. The Olympic committee just has to add a couple of new games (like they do most years). For example, there's no reason why "build your own stadium" can't be a game along with "competitive cleaning up the general area." The cleanup game is basically the summer version of curling. Maybe it's just me, but I don't see what the big deal is.

Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Santiago, Caracas, Manaus (so they could actually make use of that bleeping stadium they built for the World Cup alone), Cartegena, etc... all would have been better options than Rio if they wanted to go to South America.

To be honest, at first I thought Rio was a decent choice for the games. I figured the Brazilian's would put their infrastructure together better than they had.

Heck, I also thought this might be one of those years where they do stuff over a more spread out area (such as to some of those cities you named C2) but Brazil gets the "named location" recognition.

This is the problem with people. They love going to cities they can party in and ignore the rest. I can't name many places worse than Miami (not Beach), New Orleans, Vegas and Hollywood once you get past the novelty of the tourist traps that people enjoy going to for a weekend.

Rio sucks beyond the scenery. I'm also okay with someone enjoying the beach, though I've heard rumors of fecal matter in the water being an issue.

FYI, many of the women that come there and prosti--err, I mean hang around places like Copacabana and for Carnival are from all over Brazil and not just Rio. That's why the jury is still out for me on the women of Rio.

Not rumors!

Quote:In 75% of the samples taken at the Olympic lake, the number of fecal coliforms exceeded Brazil’s legal limit for “secondary contact,” such as boating or rowing – in two samples spiking to over 10 times the accepted level. The Marina da Gloria venue exceeded the limit only once, while at Rio’s most popular tourist beach, Ipanema, fecal coliforms tested at three times the acceptable level in a single sample.

Just so we're clear, fecal coliform is basically the smoking gun for poop in the water.
